The Chamberson is a recently refurbished building in the heart of the city centre. We have visited Dunedin many times, but decided to stay near the Octagon instead of near the OU campus. The central location is great, since it is close to restaurants, bars, museums/galleries, the train station, supermarkets, etc. The rooms are spacious and beautifully done up. The huge 19th-century windows and high ceilings let in plenty of light, but will always pose a cleaning challenge, since they are exposed to traffic fumes and salt air. We stayed just after New Year's when Dunedin is much quieter, so we can't comment on how the rooms might be with normal traffic.
The staff are friendly and the beds comfortable, with lots of fluffy pillows. There is a heat pump for excellent temperature control. The "fully equipped kitchen" could use a plunger coffee pot. The bathroom needs a proper towel rack, since the "towel rack" in the bathroom is actually the disabled assistance rail for the toilet. We were happy to reuse our towels a second day, and hung them up (not on the disabled rail for the toilet), but they were still taken away and replaced. It would help to have a rubbish bin in the bathroom, as well as one in the kitchen.
The cleaning cart, and accompanying detritus was outside our room when we left at 10:30am, and still there (with all the detritus), when we returned at 3:30pm, which is why we gave a slightly lower cleanliness rating (the rooms and bathrooms are certainly clean.
These are all minor things, but they are the sort of details that need to be addressed (and ARE addressed at the many motels in other parts of city) if the hotel wants to charge top dollar.

We had chosen The Chamberson because of its central location (lots of restaurants and breakfast places just a few steps away) and the serviced apartment concept. Our one bedroom corner apartment looked exactly as shown on the website - modern and stylish in a historical building, high ceiling, large windows with city view, fully equipped kitchen integrated into the spacious living room, bathroom with a walk-in shower. Booking communication had been very friendly and so was the welcome at check-in. The bed was comfortable. Everything was clean.

The underground parking lot (to be shared with other tenants) looks a bit neglected, and accessing it can be a challenge. There was not much space for my personal toiletries in the bathroom, and with an intersection below your windows you are bound to get some traffic noise.

Résumé: We would definitely come back.

We stayed here for a few nights over New Years and would recommend to anyone staying in Dunedin. The rooms are very clean, modern, and well maintained.
The location is great too! Handy to shops and tourist attractions. Not a lot of road noise either.
Parking is also available for a reasonable extra cost however the car parks roof is quite low (fine for our small rented hatchback).
Will definitely considering staying again.

We live in Dunedin and had a nice night out on the town. We wanted a handy location to the Octagon, nice surrounds and a lovely room. The Chamberson ticked all three boxes. This is a great property. Modern, well furnished and very comfortable. Handy to everything. Our room was overlooking Cumberland Street which is a state highway but you would never have known as the noise did not carry thanks to the well glazed windows and heavy curtains. We would very much stay again and we will also be directing anyone coming to town to stay there! Great communication making check-in a breeze.

I had stayed at the Chamberson before and really enjoyed so recommended to my God daughter and her family for her graduation weekend. Location is good and apartments are well appointed. Unfortunately this time the cleanliness was questionable and the term "serviced apartment" doubtful. When we arrived we actually wondered if the apartment had been cleaned. There was a nasty stain on the floor by the toilet, there were clumps of hair in the bedroom, a random almond nut in the dining room and the table base was thick with dust. There was also a big wet patch in front of the air con unit making the room smell musty. I rang reception and more so than the oversights with cleaning it was the response that was surprising and sub standard. I informed them of the wet patch and was told "oh that's the air condition it's normal" and when I asked if the room had been cleaned I was told "I think I cleaned it" when I listed the issues I was told " well I think it's been done" I then sent photos to the email only to receive a text say they couldn't be seen please send to a mob number which I duly did. At this point I finally received an email from the owner saying sorry our checking experience was not good and they would fix tomorrow. I replied and said we would like someone there today and soon. I was surprised there was not an immediate offer to come and see the problems and remedy.A staff member came and did a spot clean and she assured us tomorrow she was on duty so it would be cleaned properly. The next day we picked up all our stuff and left the room tidy so the cleaner could have a good run. It seems she mistook our tidiness for cleaning. We returned to find the double bed made but the 2 singles left as because we had pulled them up. The rubbish bin was full, the sinks hadn't been wiped out, things like sofa cushions and dining room chairs not moved into place suggesting no full vacuum was done. It was just very underwhelming. The cleaning staff should have a basic checklist that should be done every day regardless of if they think it looks tidy. Tidy and cleaning are 2 different things. We stayed Fri and Saturday. We were told they were getting the air con fixed on Tues and they just laid 2 towels over the wet patch for the weekend. Given they knew of the situation before we arrived I feel they should have called out a service prior to our check in even if there was an emergency call out fee. After such a lovely first stay this was really disappointing and I wouldn't recommend again for someone wanting a special weekend. It felt like staying in a cheap motel from a cleanliness point of view.

I had the pleasure of staying at The Chamberson for over 3 months after moving to Dunedin and I could not have asked for a better place. The rooms are not only modern and beautifully decorated but come with a fully equipped kitchen and a bedroom separate from the kitchen and living area. The staff are all friendly and welcoming and happy to share their knowledge of the area with recommendations for sites to visit and places to eat.

I would highly recommend The Chamberson to anyone coming to Dunedin whether it’s for a weekend or a few months!

The location is perfect for accessing central Dunedin, with the hotel being just 1 block south of the Octogen (city centre).

Booking was easy and the hosts were responsive to all queries.

Afterhours check in details were provided and very easy to follow. Room (The Nest) was very cosy and perfect for a couple. Bed was comfortable as was the sofa.
The robes were a nice touch.

An umbrella was provided by reception on a day of inclement weather.

Luggage storage was provided on the day of departure.

The Chamberson is very well located only 2 blocks from The Octagon (pedestrian mall in the centre of Dunedin). There is no restaurant, but there are plenty of eating options nearby.
We had a studio room on the top floor, but there was no window to view the surrounds. The room had a skylight, but there were no instructions on how to open/close the skylight itself for fresh air or to operate the screen to block the sun, etc. The information book did not have the number to call reception for assistance.
The bathroom was beautiful and large with a great shower, but had no shelf for toiletries and hooks to hang anything, even a hand towel.

Had an enjoyable stay at this centrally-located hotel. The Octagon Centre, the world's most photographed railway station & a supermarket all within a 5 minute walk away.Staff worked exceptionally hard when the Covid 19 alert was stepped up to help us get back to the UK, local knowledge being key.

We spent 2 nights at The Chamberson prior to boarding a cruise. The heritage listed building has been beautifully renovated, offering contemporary style and facilities whilst still retaining some character from its time as a former warehouse.

Our accommodation was a corner suite which was extremely spacious with a separate sitting room and well equipped kitchenette and delightful city views. Bed was comfortable and the little walk in room for luggage and clothes was very convenient.

The hotel is perfectly located close to the train station (which offers a couple of trips including a scenic return Taori Gorge trip which we did) and is a short walk to a variety of cafes, shops, restaurants and tourist information.

The only thing that made the stay less than totally perfect was a somewhat un-welcoming check in (which we had put down to perhaps being just a bad day), but unfortunately, we found checkout to be a similar experience. This is possibly due to the Chamberson being more of a serviced apartment complex than an actual hotel (no restaurant, concierge, breakfast etc). Nevertheless we would still highly recommend the Chamberson for its fabulous location, style and comfort.
