Hogwartz is a Backpacker Hostel with a wide spectrum of room types. Budget travellers enjoy their shared rooms with up to six beds (no bunks) or the private rooms with shared facilities. For those who prefer a little bit more privacy and luxury, they have a beautifully rebuilt, self-contained cottage (the Coach House) available with two en suite rooms and a shared full kitchen. And at the top end of the spectrum, there are two stylish, fully self-contained studio rooms (the Stables) to spoil yourselves with. Per person prices range from $24 to $58 per night, and there is some complimentary wifi at fibre-optics speed. Located a short distance uphill from the city centre, Hogwartz is a hostel for grown-ups: it is not suitable for party crowds or for small children (minimum age 12years). Free car parking is available on surrounding streets, and the walk into the Octagon takes roughly 5min. There are no gimmicks, no false promises here, just genuine quality accommodation and service.

This is a fantastic Hostel. Period. From the greeting we got from the owner as we walked in the door (complete with a walk-around of the hostel and local knowledge about how to spend our time in Dunedin) to the incredible well stocked and laid-out kitchen, the WATERFALL shower downstairs (!!!), cosy TV room and the nook upstairs to read above the dining room, this hostel really punched above its weight. For our proximity to the kitchen and dining room, it was also very quiet which pleasantly surprised us. The only reason I'm giving it four stars is that our double bed was really, really bad. Very soft, lumpy and uncomfortable, and the pillows were lumpy too. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this to everyone!

Thank you for your kind review! There is not much we can say, except it would have been really nice to hear this direct from you in the morning. That way, we would have had a chance to check straight away if anything could be done about the problem (occasionally a bed leg or frame gets broken which is hard to notice when changing sheets...). As far as the pillows are concerned, we use only feather which means they generally just need a good shake to fluff them up and redistribute the fill. Please feel free to let us know which room you are referring to, and we'll be more than happy to look into these issues! Many thanks!

As this was a hostel we were not expecting great things. In fact our room was quite lovely - two large sash windows with views over the city, bright and sunny. The shared bathrooms were clean and worked well. The shared kitchen was well-equipped and orderly. The receptionist / manager was friendly and helpful A great location just a short walk from the centre of town.

I stayed at Hogwarts Hostel for two weeks. It is near to the city centre, a little bit up the hill. The rooms are very clean, as well as the kitchen and the bathrooms. The common rooms are cozy and inviting. There is also a nice terrace which is perfect for having breakfast or dinner. The dorm (with 5 beds) was big, so you have enough space for your stuff. The staff was always very friendly and courteous, very caring people. I would always come back again and tell everybody who comes to Dunedin to do the same.

We did our booking by I-site and they forgotte to tell that we have a five mounth old baby.

We arrived late to Hogwartz and was suposed to stay for two nights, we paid in advance. When we came there was no one in the reception and our key was there for us to take with a welcomming note.

The next day when my girlfriend came down to reception to say hello the owner looked like she seen an UFO, she spotted our baby. She was almost hysteric and the point was that no baby was aloud to Hogwartz, she kicked us out on the spot, we had to go quickly. We packed our things and was suprised to meet this kind of hate against children.

We got our money back for the second night but I hope that anybody that read this understand that maybe you are the next to be kicked out from this hotel becourse you don´t fit the owners taste.

Don´t go to Hogwartz!

The people that run this place are very over whelming with their un helpfulness, to say anything
but nice in the way they go about things. I was rudely spoken to then shown the way to the door.
I think these people are the kind you would not associate yourself with. "due to the arrogance"
that repells you from even considering to stay with these kind of people. Please do not be mislead by the front these people protray them selfs to be. There is another side to the owners
of this place that is not nice. I have travelled the world for the the last twenty five years so I do
not like to make judgements, Unless it is situations like this that you have to be heard to bring
the problem to light.

I stayed in a double room by myself in late September. Everything they provided was of the lowest quality: 1 ply toilet paper that will get pierced through easily by gentle motions, heater that is not strong at all to warm you even under 10C and will wake you two to three times a night, hot water that will turn cold while you are still shampooing your hair...

What's more is a middle-aged women keeping an eye on your usage of water when you're cooking in the kitchen, telling you to conserve water by reusing dirty soapy water left in the sink to clean the dishes while NZ is never lack of water and while you pay for everything trying to enjoy your vacation.

Location wise, it is 10 min uphill from the Octagon on foot. You'll probably need a taxi from the city centre to get there if you don't have your own vehicle with luggage. So taking the taxi fares into account, staying in a hotel/motel will definitely be a better deal.

We stayed here for one night while driving from Milord Sound to Christchurch. We found this place from TripAdvisor and thought we’d give it a try. We tried to make advance reservations, but they only accept them 2 months before the date of your stay. So by the time we remembered to make them again, we we’re too late to get the private ensuite -- but due to a late cancellation, we ended up with the private ensuite anyway when we checked in.

The location is great. Dunedin is a nice little city, easy to see all there is to offer in an afternoon. It was a 5-minute walk to the “Octagon” or city center. Also less than 5 minutes from the Speight Brewery, where we ended our day with multiple beers (try the IPA) and a great fish fry dinner.

The hostel was a little less than we expected. The guy who checked us in was nice enough – but never once did either one of the couple who own the hostel even bother to say hello (or even give us a smile) even though we crossed paths about a half dozen times. Our private room was small and worn. The little heater in the room was like trying to heat the place with a candle and it never really warmed up at all. Luckily, there was an extra blanket in the closet that we used. We literally slept with our winter hats on that night. Having our own bathroom was nice and only cost about $10 NZ per night for that upgrade.

The common kitchen was nice, even though all we used it for was to heat up water for coffee in the morning. The parking was free, but it’s street parking along a VERY narrow back alley. We got parked in so tightly that it took us the better part of 15 minutes to navigate our little car out without slamming into another car or running up onto the opposite curb.

The nicest thing about the place was the dog. Good location, OK for one night.

Not sure why this place was highly reviewed in books. One of the owners can't be bothered to even say hello, one of the dogs will bite you if you look at it the wrong way. The kitchen and bathrooms were all modern and nice but hospitality (or lack of) goes a long way. Would not recommend unless no other options at the time. Hint to owners: if you don't like people don't run a backpackers.

- The hostel itself is nice and clean and comfortable.
- There is no parking and the back alleys are very awkward and uncomfortable to park and very dark at night, making parking very difficult, unless you want to walk up and down very steep streets for a few minutes.
- The owners (mainly the male one) are a bit rigid about trivial things like what door to use to enter/exit, where to park, etc. and don't exactly exude hospitality or warmth. Although respectful, they can come across as unfriendly.
- Reception closes and doors get locked at 7pm which is too early and a bit odd.

- On the positive side, the above-mentioned hosts work very hard to keep the place clean and safe, constantly wiping things down, for example in the kitchen.

The recently renovated Coach House is a separate building to the main hostel and is ideal for 2 couples - there is an upstairs and downstairs room, both with their own private loo and shower, but with a shared kitchen. A real gem. A bit difficult to find and up a very steep hill out of the town, so not ideal for those with mobility problems. I believe you can only stay in the coach house for a minimum of 2 nights. One down side we found was that as we thought the downstairs was empty on our last night (when we had to be up and away at 5 am the next morning) - the owners had suggested our travelling friends could in fact stay downstairs even though they were only going to be there for one night, but at an extra $32 cost. They had already unpacked in the pain hostel, so declined. So we were not told someone else had come into the room below, and at 4.30 am we obviously woke them up - easily done if you think you have the building to yourselves. So some thought on the part of the owners, needs to go into the departure time of guests in that building - or at least let the occupants know if they are on their own, or not.
