Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We were part of a fairly large group, several of whom had stayed here before. Our suite was immaculate on the front corner of the hotel, second floor, which could be a little noisy on Saturday nights if the windows are left ajar.
Plenty of positives, especially filtered water on tap, large Smart TV in the lounge and a small Smart TV in the bedroom.
The bathroom was also immaculate with a spa bath (use ony between 9am and 9pm).
A warm friendly welcome and the whole site is smoke free.
The only niggles are tiny, such as the perrenial problem of architects placing bathroom ceiling lights, so that your face is in shadow in the mirror and just two place settings. There is a wardrobe, but no drawers.
We'd happily stay here again as would the rest of our group.

We had a 1 bedroom unit which was so roomy and big.
Kitchenette had everything you need - no dishwasher or oven but it had a microwave.
Lounge area had a tub chair and a lounge as well, also in that area was a table and chairs. A small courtyard was outside with a lovely garden and seating area.
Bedroom was large 2 double doors led into the lounge area and another door led into the hallway which was a good size again. Bed was really comfortable and clean, the whole unit was very clean.
The bathroom again was large as was the shower which was very powerful.
I think this unit was what they call in NZ an assessable as it was equipt to take anyone with a disability , wheelchair etc.
Parking was a bit awkward - it was on a slope as Dunedin is quite hilly.
Location was good - walking into the city was not a problem.
Staff were friendly and very helpful, my only complaint was we wished we could have stayed longer than 2 nights. Hopefully we will be back some day.

The Motel on York was a wonderful discovery here in Dunedin, New Zealand! Jo in the front office was wonderful to work with, and just a delight to talk to!

The motel is centrally located in the city, and within walking distance to the Octogon, restaurants, and shops. Plus, it was just a few minutes drive down to Saint Clair Beach where we had a nice lunch at a restaurant called Salt. We were in Suite 6, which has a queen bed, a nice patio, and a view of the city.

We took Jo’s suggestion and went for a drive to the end of the Otago Peninsula, where we saw beautiful beaches, spectacular views of the harbor, and if you’re lucky, you will see the giant albatross.

I almost booked us into the Scenic hotel, which is a chain here in New Zealand, but was glad I didn’t when I saw the large tourist buses deliver hundreds of people into the lobby when I walked by.

I found that it was easy to book directly on the motels website, and we even paid for the continental breakfast, which was delightful every morning.

Stay at The Motel on York and enjoy your visit to Dunedin!

Excellent motel, convenient location, helpful hosts. Our studio was well equipped and comfortable with underfloor heating in the bathroom and a water filter tap in the kitchen. A hand towel was provided for the kitchen, something I look for but rarely find, evidence of the attention to detail by the hosts

Our room was very clean and spacious. It had a great outlook and was light and sunny. The rooms are over three floors, we had a third floor room which we liked for view over the rooftops and peeps of the sea. The sliding doors opened to a narrow balcony not wide enough to sit on but nice to step out onto or to open the door for fresh air. I would definitely stay here again.

The location is ideal with restaurants, markets, and sites close by. The hotel itself is well thought out. It is just rooms, no bar or restaurant or anything. They are very useful for tips on activities that guests have confirmed enjoyable and have a guest laundry which was wonderful having been living out of luggage for over two weeks. Just really pleasant proprietors.

We were in Dunedin for the Pink concert. We booked nearly 12 months ahead and were fortunate to get in as everything was really busy. So glad we picked this motel, the location was perfect for us, walking distance to shops and restaurants, and close enough to walk back from the concert at Forsyth Barr (25 minutes a flat and easy walk). The units we had were lovely and clean and well maintained, warm and cosy on a chilly Dunedin day and had all that we needed for a great stay, the water filter tap was a nice extra and the shower was wonderful, great pressure! Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and check in and out was easy and smooth. Thank you for a lovely few days.

We stayed here for one night in January 2024.

We've been to Dunedin various times and have always stayed at different places depending on cost and availability etc. Finally we've found the Motel on York and this will now be our "go to" place when we revisit Dunedin.

The motel is located just one block from the main street, up a slight hill (but nothing too difficult), so just a few minutes from shops and restaurants. There is a good parking area, for which there is no extra charge.

Our room was large with a separate lounge and a good view over the city. The bathroom had a large spa bath, and the kitchen facilities were good. There was no noise from the street, and the wifi worked well.

We will definitely stay here again when next visiting Dunedin.

Check for access which unit you get allocated. Rooms very clean and really nice staff or owners on site. Parking on Street nearby is very steep. Maybe a bit small inside, especially with no balcony and placement of TV and tub chairs
