What a fantastic find we did have problems finding accommodation in Christchurch due to the earthquakes, but the Tourist Information website was extremely helpful and hence we found Anslem House.
This really is a lovely home from home B&B. Jan kindly picked us up where our tour coach dropped us and made us so welcome. Yes the house does have signs of damage on the outside but it does not distract from what a great home it is.
Very comfortable room and with free WIFI a great bonus in NZ as some hotels charged a fortune. As much tea and coffee as you wanted with plenty of biscuits and fruit as well.
Fabulous breakfast ! The best fresh fruit salad by far that we had down under.
Great location easy walk to find a restaurant and Jan will happily advise you. Next door is Riccarton House and park a lovely place to explore, but no Kiwis at present.
Despite the earthquake damage Christchurch it is a great place to visit.

What can't I say about Jan and Leigh and their beautiful Anselm House on the Avon River. Starting with the coffee and cookies Leigh greated us with, and the bubbly personalty Jan had, although she just came for the dentist and had a tooth pulled. We had the River Room whose view was more than we hoped for. We love arts and crafts furniture and their home had some great pieces. Jan's breakfast's were huge. They start you with a continental breakfast and then you pick which hot breakfast you want afterwards. That was above and beyond our expectations. The conversations we had with them were great. They make you feel like part of their family. The gardens are georgeous. We were sorry we could only stay 2 days with them, but it was the end of our 2 week vacation and it seems as if we saved the best B & B for last. You need to mark this B&B as a must stay if you're in Christchurch...you won't be disappointed.

We started our South Island 'sojourn' w/ a 3 nite stay at Anselm House. As noted in earlier reviews, Leigh will, if needed, pick you up at the airport and by the time you arrive at their B & B you will be saturated with practical local info. Leigh does have a gift for gab. My American ear strained to keep up w/ his accent, but that made it the more fun.

Greeted by Jan at their home, you instantly know you have entered a 'comfort zone' of easy familiarity and unpretentious charm. The River Room, as our room is called, was very comfortable. To term breakfasts plentiful would be an understatement; Jan is constantly concerned that every thing is just to your liking. After one morning's breakfast in which the conversation touched on different kinds of kiwi fruit, sure enough -- the next morning appeared golden kiwis for a tasting comparison w/ green kiwis.

We just happened to be in Christchurch on the 3rd year anniversary of the most major of their earthquakes. Its truly shocking to see the extent of the devastation --though by now largely cleaned up. Repairs to many remaining structures will take years to complete, not to mention new construction. Our general sense though was of a community bravely 'keeping a stiff upper lip', a note of character shared by Jan and Leigh. If you're coming thru Christchurch, we strongly suggest staying at Anselm House, as much for a touch of the true Christchurch as for the comfort of the lodging.

We had the pleasure of staying with Jan and Leigh twice during our recent visit to the South Island. We experienced such a lovely stay with them that we were sad to leave. They're conveniently located about 15mins from the airport and not far from the city and sights. We stayed in the room overlooking the river which was both beautiful and serene. Both bedroom and bathroom were spotless. However the true reason to stay at this B&B (asides from its great location) is the hospitality of Jan and Leigh. Over the two stays they felt like family to us. Jan's breakfasts are amazing - enough to feed an army. Her homemade shortbread is also fantastic. They introduced us to the joys of manuka honey. Leigh is a fantastic story teller and provided us with so much information and history on the places we were going and had come from. In short, we would happily stay with them again and definitely recommend Anselm House in Christchurch.

If you want to experience genuine New Zealand hospitality then you should stay with Jan and Leigh at Anselm House. We were there several years ago and recently returned for another 4 days - we wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Christchurch. Jan and Leigh are warm and friendly, but not intrusive. They are knowledgeable about all aspects of New Zealand life including farming, wine, the arts and tourist attractions. The excellent breakfasts include fresh fruit salad, delicious muesli, homemade jams and a flexible cooked breakfast menu to suit individual guests. The "River Room" is light and airy with a comfortable bed and a beautiful outlook over the Anselm House gardens and the Avon River. We enjoyed watching the two species of duck and the antics of their ducklings. We love the location, which allows for a healthy 30 minute walk into town through Hagley Park in combination with a different route through the Botanic Gardens every day. Alternatively, there is a bus at the door and shops and restaurants nearby. Jan and Leigh are the most caring hosts we have ever encountered in all our travels around the world. Their delightful home is a real gem.

We feel extremely lucky to have chosen the Anselm House. Jan and Leigh are perfect hosts--friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and very interesting to talk to. Because their bed and breakfast is very convenient to the Christchurch airport (as well as the city itself), we stayed two nights--our first night in New Zealand, and our last night. Both times, they greeted us with tea and cookies and fed us incredible breakfasts! After our first night, they also gave us very helpful tips about our driving route--where to stop for lunch, where to see especially beautiful scenery, etc. We followed each tip and feel that they really enhanced our trip. Our bedroom and bed were very comfortable, with a large private bathroom. Their garden, situated along the banks of the Avon River, is a quiet, lovely place to sit and talk. This is definitely a PERFECT place to stay!

After a very long flight it was great to spend our first night in NZ at Jan and Leigh's delightful B&B. The comfy bed was particularly welcome. Anselm House is situated in a very pleasant suburban neighbourhood but within a short (10 min) bus ride from the centre of Christchurch. A large shopping mall with a range of restaurants etc is even closer ( 5 min walk away). It is very conveniently located for both the airport and the rail station and Leigh is happy to pick up and drop off his guests at both places even at inconvenient times.
The opportunity to pick up travel tips from J&L and compare notes with other guests make B&Bs such as this one a much more preferable option than a relatively soulless motel or hotel when travelling in NZ.

We have just returned from Christchurch where Jan & Leigh looked after us superbly well in difficult times. We were due to arrive the day after the earthquake. Jan had contacted us letting us know their circumstances & offering us to chance to cancel should we wish to do so. Our en-suite room was perfectly prepared, tastefully decorated & very comfortable. As restaurants were still closed, we shared with our hosts a lovely evening meal prepared by Jan - Breakfast was wonderful too. Leigh kindly picked us up from dropping of our hire car & took us to the airport for out flight..

Jan & Leigh really are a lovely couple & such generous hosts who like all the people of Christchurch deserve our support.
