I had an extremely unpleasant experience with this place and it is a real shame. The location and premises are lovely and the woman who welcomed us and showed us our rooms was ver friendly. I returned a little later with my daughter to change to go out for the evening. The driveway is quite narrow and there is limited parking. Because it is on a fairly busy road my daughter did not want to back out of the driveway (we have since discovered there is space to turn at the end of the drive but did not know this at the time). She started executing a ‘seven-point’ turn. I was out of the vehicle directing her to ensure she didn’t hit anything. The male owner came out and very rudely and aggressively asked “What the hell do you think you are doing”. He demanded that she back out and when she tried to explain he was extremely rude, asked me several times “where did you get this one from”. Even after I advised she was my daughter he called her a drunk or a space head (she was completely sober and very calm although determined). He eventually ended up backing the vehicle out but the nastiness, name calling and rudeness continued including him swearing at us and telling us to F-off! Remember in all this we are paying guests at his high-end establishment! I was physically shaking by this stage but ended up collecting my bags and leaving. I have never experienced anything like this before. If he had come out and nicely suggested that we back out and that there was space to turn rather than backing on to the road it would have all been so different. Even 36 hours later I am still extremely distressed by the incident. I understand that there had been a recent bereavement in the family but that is no excuse to ever treat anyone like this and particularly not paying customers! I definitely do not recommend anyone to stay here.

Unfortunately this incident could have been avoided, I agree! The vehicle that was involved in the a 'very near collision' was visiting and was quite appalled at what was taking place and consequences of what the result may have been. We offer valet parking for a reason, which was offered to your daughter on this occasion and quite firmly and aggressively denied.

We booked 2 rooms on Booking confirmed but received email from the hotel saying there is no vacancy available blaming Booking. Tried calling/emailing The Establishment hotel back but no communication and could not get through. Absolutely not acceptable as this was the same day as our reservation. Found that the hotel is supposed to close the availability once reached and they did not do it. Lucky Booking.com were very helpful and assisted us finding another accommodation last minute. Would not recommend this place and would not deal with them again.

Hi Jana. We are a small boutique BnB with 3 rooms only. We are not a hotel. All of our providers are linked so when a room is booked, by rights as a guest you should be able to view this on the provider you are using. On the day of your request, we had one room available as per email I sent to you, that slept 2 guests, we however did not have 2 rooms available and unfortunately do not know the reason why Booking.com would be showing this . If we did have enough rooms to accommodate you all, we would have gladly accepted your booking. The Establishment is a bed and breakfast premises we are not always in the office all day hence why we will have missed your calls to the landline, however there are 2 mobile phone numbers available online. The Establishment is very professional in every thing we do and very sorry for any inconvenience as mentioned in email sent on the day.

Spent 3 nights in the Establishment. This is an upmarket B&B managed by Jen & Russell Webley. You can spent many words on this or simply say that it was fantastic. Well, a few words then. Jen and Russel are lovely people. Very helpful and friendly (could be family). They go all the way for their guests. After having settled, we were invited to have a very nice cheese platter and a glass of wine on the terrace. Just gorgeous They gave us some good advise on where to have dinner in the city. Breakfast was just fantastic. Never skip Russell’s omelet! The rooms -though not very large- are very comfortable with a very well equiped bathroom. The room we had, had a small terrace with table and two chairs. In all, this is a place we would warmly recommend.

This is a very small property that feels more like a home than a rental property. Jen greeted us and helped us settle in after many hours in an airplane. The wine (recommended!) and cheese a bit later on was delicious, with a wide selection of NZ wines that we had a chance to work our way through while visiting. The property is well located and quiet, and just what we needed after the bustle of our Asian travels. Would recommend it for sure.

When I am in Christchurch, The Establishment is when I choose to stay. It suits my travelling needs entirely. This visit I had driven from Wanaka. Warmly greeted by Jim & Carole with the offer of nibbles & wine. There are comfortable wide open lounge areas to relax in. I always sleep well in the large comfortable bed. The bathroom is well appointed, nice big shower with a traditional or rain shower head. There are lovely touches like the tea/coffee offerings, biscuits & chocolates. Jim & Carole ensure a great start to my day with cereal, coffee and delicious omelette and a easy conversation offering spot-on travel advice. They are always willing to go that extra step. As I was travelling solo - introduced me to another couple & offering to be my dinner companions at a little local Vietnamese restaurant. Happy to recommend The Establishment and will enjoy their hospitality later in the year.

If you want the comfortable room of a 5 star hotel but the personal touches of a boutique style or b&b then this is the place for you. The bathrooms are very modern and exceptionally clean (and really well designed!!). Comfortable beds, with nice little touches like Fererro Rocher chocolates & bottled sparkling water. Breakfast is in the homes kitchen which is personal yes but also incredibly open and stylish. There is a huge array of breakfast options. We also shared pre dinner drinks and cheese/nibbles with Jim and Carole (the owners were away) who were very hospitable & good company. So much so we invited ourselves along to their dinner reservations at a local Vietnamese restaurant!! Used to 5 star accommodation which can be cold and isolating, our stay here was a lot more warm and friendly. We had local advice, maps, restaurant recommendations and it felt like a stay with friends. Very enjoyable!!

I felt like part of the family by owners Jen and Russell who welcomed a road weary traveler. They provide all the luxury comforts of a hotel and combined it with the warmth of a B&B. I was attended to like I was the only guest and enjoyed engaging with the owners on a personal level. You are definitely part of their home there but there are plenty of spaces to tuck away and relax privately. Decor is modern and contemporary and rooms are fitted with the amenities of a luxury hotel. I found rooms might feel close together but still quiet. I had a vehicle and I would recommend one for travelers (note: I did not do other research on travel options since I didn't need to). Chirstchurch is still recovering from earthquake so some areas I thought might be open were closed off but it's still a charming place to visit with plenty of other options nearby. Greatful for the welcome I received!

Upon arrival at Christchurch, Jim was waiting for us and drove us to the hotel, where Carole warmely welcomed us. This place is a small (3 rooms) hotel, but it is outstanding in many ways. The rooms a fairly large. The hosts do everything to make your stay a great one. The Establishment is in walking distance to the city center. Make sure you have an omelette made by Carole!

We stayed at The Establishment after 10 days touring the South Island in a camper van. This was exactly what we needed before flying home! On arrival we were greeted by Jen and Russell, the owners, and made to feel at home. The room was beautifully appointed and very spacious and quiet. We were served a brilliant cheese board and wine on the outside decking which hit the spot perfectly (plus cuddles with Millie the dog helped!) My only regret was that our flight was too early the next morning for us to stay for breakfast. Oh well, next time...

We stayed for one night at the Establishment and thought it was far from what it promised to be. This is actually someone's home, and you get to sleep like literally next to their bedroom. There is zero privacy and it feels super awkward. It is just like staying with parents or relatives at their house. The rooms are clean and comfy, but far to overprices for what it is. The hosts are nice but still can't shake the awkwardness of the place.

Hello - thank you for your review - You are right we are not a hotel ... We are a boutique bed and breakfast... All our suites are completely separate, private and quiet. We have several separate guest lounge spaces plus wonderfully private garden areas. We provide a service that is warm and welcoming without interfering in your personally space. I am sorry that The Establishment was not the place for you.
