To rediscover the delight of staying in a small French hotel or Chambre d’hotes, try this hidden B and B treasure in the seaside suburb of Christchurch.
Tastefully furnished with attention to detail and in a French style, this is a homely place for a break by the sea.
breakfast with freshly baked crossiants is included.
Highly recommended.

We have a great 2 nights staying here. Friendly manager and also a very cute Kara! (hope that i spell correctly!) Too bad that we forgot to take a photo with Bruce...

We like the atmosphere here...relax, cozy and the hotel design looks quite France. We order 4 rooms during our staying and we like here very much.

It is a bit traffic jam from CHC to here while off working hours.

Why waste money staying in a soulless motel or pricey hotel in central Christchurch unless you have to. A far better option is to come to Sumner (15 mins from central Christchurch) and stay at the Petit Hotel. Run by the friendly and charming Bruce and Martine the vibe is much the same as walking into a superior French establishment but with very good plumbing (especially the shower), a very comfortable Queen bed and a generous breakfast with fruit, cereal and croissant. There is parking out the back and good cafes in easy walking distance. the only downside is the fairly busy road out front but the traffic seemed to disappear at night so we were not kept awake.

The owner yelled at us just because there was some water outside of the shower area within the bathroom. We offered the owner that we shall clean that area in the bathroom but the owner still kept yelling at us. After the incident, we were very scared. The owners were extremely rude. It was a very disturbing and uncomfortable stay. The table and chairs outside our room were completely rusted. The wardrobes in our room were filled with computer monitors. The coffee maker wasn't clean. The breakfast was pretty moderate.

Dear TravellerLife14, Firstly I must sincerely apologise for anything in our hotel operation that may have upset you. Martine and I are passionate owners of Le Petit Hotel, and we do our utmost to deliver the best hospitality service to each individual guest, that we can collectively provide. We are on the premises 24/7 and we happily meet any requests by guests such as extra towels. However sometimes, the different cultural aspects of some of our varied guests, do lead to problems, which in this case involved the bedroom carpet being soaked with shower water. Our hotel is furnished in the French style, and the genuine French table & chairs outside are simply part of the atmosphere along with our very unique French/Italian pine trees that now shade the front patio. The TV monitor in your room had recently been replaced, & the unit you noticed in the wardrobe was awaiting a pickup by our local technology recyling agent. We recycle everything possible that passes through our hands as part of our operation. I think 99.99% of travellers who step into Le Petit Hotel, would simply refute as nonsense and an extreme exaggeration, the suggestion that we are scary hosts. Our reviews on TripAdvisor and elsewhere, speak for themselves on our hospitality, the relaxed comfort that the hotel provides, and its genuine petit dejeuner. The managers of Le Petit Hotel always extend a very warm welcome to all guests, where ever they come from.

It was our last night in New Zealand before continuing our holiday in Australia, and unfortunately we made a bad choice of staying at the Le Petit Hotel. The hotel is located quite far from the Christchurch centre and on a very busy main road in Sumner, a suburb of Christchurch. Even with the windows closed we had a sleepless night because of the traffic. It is not beachfront. Maybe the rooms at the back are quieter. The breakfast was continental and limited.
The hotel is pretty and tastefully furnished, but for us it turned to be the worst place we stayed in New Zealand because of its location and poor soundproofing.

Dear Irena, We appreciate all reviews and as you may have noticed, as a rule our guests leave us, more than happy to have stayed with us, and also having been delighted in respect of Sumner, the village being the premier seaside suburb of Christchurch , where the local restaurants all within 3 mins walk from Le Petit Hotel, can take you around the world with their excellent menu offerings. While the hotel is 20 mins from the city, we do benefit from a reliable, low cost and frequent bus service which connects Sumner to both the Central Bus Station in the City as well as the International Airport, & many of our guests actually welcome the opportunity to relax away from the busy city as it undergoes serious reconstruction post the damaging earthquakes of a few years ago now. Le Petit Hotel is a genuine small very comfortable French hotel, and we serve a continental breakfast or petit dejeuner as its known in France...together with our unique Grand croissants freshly baked each morning. We also cater for those with special dietary needs such as Gluten or dairy free upon request. As for noise, there are the busy times both morning & night, with workers & their cars either going to work or coming home to Sumner, however for normal sleeping hours at night, the streets are actually very quiet. Most guests appreciate the double glazing and the French shutters that help reduce street noise, and subject to availability, we do our very best to place guests in the room that suits their particular needs. However when guests arrive for a very brief stay of less than 24 hrs in peak season, it is sometimes difficult to make any adjustments in respect of room allocations. However having said that, most guests really do appreciate a balcony room with a sea view, and more so when they are in Sumner for just a 1 night stopover. Thanks again for taking time to review us.

Le Petit Hotel was our first stop after a long international flight from the States. Bruce was very welcoming and informative. He quickly got us settled in our comfortable and spacious room, which was situated upstairs in the front (with a balcony). We immediately felt relaxed and able to unwind. This quaint bed & breakfast was intimate and furnished beautifully. Everything was very clean and unclutterd. Our bed was very cmfortable and the bathroom was very nice with a great shower & lots of hot water. The location was perfect for us as we just wanted to unwind and walk around Sumner and enjoy the beach- all an easy walk from Le Petit. I especially loved the reception room where we enjoyed our breakfast-- Pretty china and tablecloths on every table and a sunny view outside. A very lovely continental breakfast was included- not the average continental breakfast you may have come to expect. Bruce served us his infamous large FRESH BAKED croissants, which were delicious! Bruce had asked us the day before what time we would like to eat in the morning- so our croissants were hot out of the oven. My tip here would be to get there when you say you will- if you want to be spoiled :) Also, fresh fruit, preserves, cereals and very good FRESH hot coffee were provided. There is also seating right outside if you like, with a view to a neighbouring garden. I adored their quiet little Scottie dog who lay by my feet, licking my toes We felt very welcome here and had a great stay!

We stayed here on our first night in New Zeland and loved this place! The rooms are beautiful, very romantic and classy. Furnishings and fixtures are beautiful. The breakfast is delightful with freshly made coffee and tea and fresh-baked croissants.
We really enjoyed our stay with Martine and Bruce. Sumner is a cute little beach town with good restaurants and good coffee. One thing to note, however, is that it is not close to the airport, so it's important to rent a car or anticipate an expensive taxi fare or a long bus ride.
We had to go back through Christchurch on our way from South Island to North Island and we chose to stay here again, and due to adverse weather, had to ask if they could accommodate us a day early. Bruce and Martine graciously arranged for us to have a room for an additional night at the last minute.
I can't recommend this hotel enough - we never wanted to leave!

Dear SquirrelGirl13, What a fascinating cover name. Martine & I really appreciate your review of Le Petit Hotel, and we are happy that Sumner created some good memories. Like many cities around the world, Christchurch has a privately run coach shuttle service which runs 24/7 between the Christchurch International & Domestic airport terminals and the Central City. This service also extends out to the suburbs like Sumner and it is another option for inbound or departing travellers. The service can be booked on line at www.supershuttle.co.nz and the price is very reasonable at approx NZ$60.00 for 2 people. I totally agree that the bus is a long ride albeit at little cost, however if you have the time to spare it does give you some insight into some of the City's suburbs , and a brief look at the Central City including the new bus exchange. Martine & I sincerely wish you safe happy travels going forward. Kindest regards Bruce

had a very good time there for the last two mights of my stay in NZ.
nicely decorated room with lots of thought given to detail and the breakfast is a real treat with the french Croissant and freshly pressed orange juice among the offering.
Bruce gave me some very good recommendations for dinner and lunch.
They even extended my checkout time to accomodate my wish to do more surfing on the morning before departure, very nice.

Dear Conrad, Many thanks for your kind review...and it gives Martine & I real pleasure to know that you enjoyed both Le Petit Hotel's hospitality and also Sumner's environment..particularly given that you took up the chance to try board surfing on Scarborough beach.... Now you have an excuse to find a surf beach on the German coast line..this coming European summer. Also it was good to have our PV Solar discussion. We both wish you good health and happiness in retirement and hope to see you again. Kindest regards Bruce

Le Petit Hotel is a cute wee find over in Sumner. The name tells you a lot. It has 6 suites available, with very personal service, and has a thoroughly French theme from the furniture to the décor and room amenities. The hosts are very welcoming and work hard to see that you are feeling taken care of. Bathrooms at the very best end of those available generally in commercial establishments. Delightful buffet breakfast with the most wonderful fresh locally made artisan croissant (baked in house though). Also, Cara the Scotty dog was a lovely companion.
