Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

To rediscover the delight of staying in a small French hotel or Chambre d’hotes, try this hidden B and B treasure in the seaside suburb of Christchurch. Tastefully furnished with attention to detail and in a French style, this is a homely place for a break by the sea. breakfast with freshly baked crossiants is included. Highly recommended.

The owner yelled at us just because there was some water outside of the shower area within the bathroom. We offered the owner that we shall clean that area in the bathroom but the owner still kept yelling at us. After the incident, we were very scared. The owners were extremely rude. It was a very disturbing and uncomfortable stay. The table and chairs outside our room were completely rusted. The wardrobes in our room were filled with computer monitors. The coffee maker wasn't clean. The breakfast was pretty moderate.

Response from Bruce Whitfield, Owner at Le Petit Hotel Sumner
Responded 25 Mar 2020
Dear TravellerLife14, Firstly I must sincerely apologise for anything in our hotel operation that may have upset you. Martine and I are passionate owners of Le Petit Hotel, and we do our utmost to deliver the best hospitality service to each individual guest, that we can collectively provide. We are on the premises 24/7 and we happily meet any requests by guests such as extra towels. However sometimes, the different cultural aspects of some of our varied guests, do lead to problems, which in this case involved the bedroom carpet being soaked with shower water. Our hotel is furnished in the French style, and the genuine French table & chairs outside are simply part of the atmosphere along with our very unique French/Italian pine trees that now shade the front patio. The TV monitor in your room had recently been replaced, & the unit you noticed in the wardrobe was awaiting a pickup by our local technology recyling agent. We recycle everything possible that passes through our hands as part of our operation. I think 99.99% of travellers who step into Le Petit Hotel, would simply refute as nonsense and an extreme exaggeration, the suggestion that we are scary hosts. Our reviews on TripAdvisor and elsewhere, speak for themselves on our hospitality, the relaxed comfort that the hotel provides, and its genuine petit dejeuner. The managers of Le Petit Hotel always extend a very warm welcome to all guests, where ever they come from.

I find hotels in Christchurch expensive and very standard. We chose this property due to its location near the gondola, which was the only thing we had time for in Christchurch. The owner is French and has decorated the rooms in a French theme, with a lot of care and detail. Breakfast with delicious croissants is served in the lounge room. The hotel is close to the beach and several restaurants, which is very handy. I really liked the area, I would definitely stay there again.

We spent 2 nights here after a 24 hr flight from the UK. It was perfect for relaxing and getting over jetlag. The rooms are a good size and nicely furnished in a French style. The hosts are most friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent. The location is nice with the beach at Sumner just across the road. Sumner is small and quiet but has a good number of cafes and restaurants. Our room was at the front of the hotel with a beach view. There was some road noise in the morning as we slept with the windows open, but with the windows closed it was perfectly quiet.

We stayed here on our first night in New Zeland and loved this place! The rooms are beautiful, very romantic and classy. Furnishings and fixtures are beautiful. The breakfast is delightful with freshly made coffee and tea and fresh-baked croissants. We really enjoyed our stay with Martine and Bruce. Sumner is a cute little beach town with good restaurants and good coffee. One thing to note, however, is that it is not close to the airport, so it's important to rent a car or anticipate an expensive taxi fare or a long bus ride. We had to go back through Christchurch on our way from South Island to North Island and we chose to stay here again, and due to adverse weather, had to ask if they could accommodate us a day early. Bruce and Martine graciously arranged for us to have a room for an additional night at the last minute. I can't recommend this hotel enough - we never wanted to leave!

Dear SquirrelGirl13, What a fascinating cover name. Martine & I really appreciate your review of Le Petit Hotel, and we are happy that Sumner created some good memories. Like many cities around the world, Christchurch has a privately run coach shuttle service which runs 24/7 between the Christchurch International & Domestic airport terminals and the Central City. This service also extends out to the suburbs like Sumner and it is another option for inbound or departing travellers. The service can be booked on line at www.supershuttle.co.nz and the price is very reasonable at approx NZ$60.00 for 2 people. I totally agree that the bus is a long ride albeit at little cost, however if you have the time to spare it does give you some insight into some of the City's suburbs , and a brief look at the Central City including the new bus exchange. Martine & I sincerely wish you safe happy travels going forward. Kindest regards Bruce
