Detailed Reviews
Our stay with Sue and Robin was excellent in every respect. They were wonderful hosts and provided us with timely and appropriate advice to make our visit to Christchurch memorable. There is good reason for the positive reviews provided by others and I could repeat all of the kudos here but can sum it up with the advice: stay here and you won't be disappointed

Sue and Robin are the exceptional hosts: attentive yet not intrusive. Very accomodating, know the area well for great tips on food and sights. Rooms and home spotless and quiet. Breakfast and evening hosting was perfect. Quick access to airport and routes to city centre.

After a busy 11 days of traveling across New Zealand, our travel agent in her wisdom ended our trip in the perfect location. The accommodations at the Clearview Lodge provided us a warm and inviting atmosphere which allowed us to unwind before our next destination. Sue and Robin were quite gracious as hosts. They advised on where to visit, where to eat, how to get there, and made the calls to get us connected. They also spent time with us talking, telling us about New Zealand and about themselves and their vision for their lodge. They also shared how they intentionally bought the land with the intention of making it a bed and breakfast along with a living quarter for themselves. The lodge is stunningly beautiful and provides a haven to hid the busyness of the city. I would highly recommend this lodge if you're anywhere near Christchurch.

in october 2012 me and my husband got married at clearview lodge. we were aware it was not a wedding venue but the owners agreed we could get married there as long as we booked all three rooms out for the night and also if my husband and i booked a room the night before. so we did that. we were disappointed from the moment we arrived. the owner was constantly in our face. the room was not clean. there was a bowl of rotton fruit in our room which was advertised as a "fresh fruit platter" it was far from fresh! we were not made to feel welcome. we were meant to be served breakfast at 9am on the morning of our wedding. we went into the kitchen and were made to feel so unwelcome. she gave us breakfast at 10am it was dry and cold and she told us not all of the meal was there as she had "ran out". definitly not what id expect from a 5 star hotel! we started getting ready for our big day. my inlaws arrived to help us get ready. they were also staying that night in the other rooms we had booked and the owner was rude to them from the moment they walked in. i was trying to get ready and the cleaner kept coming in and out of my room and bathroom with dirty towels and a toilet brush in his hand. i asked him to leave several times and he wouldnt and i felt this was very rude and un professional. my children then arrived and were supervised the whole time. they are very well behaved and still the owner kept picking at them over nothing telling them off for things they were not even doing. guests arrived and we began with the ceremony outside. i had gone over everything that was going to happen with the owner and she had agreed to it all as it was all with in reason. everyone was very respectable of the property. all bottles and wine glasses were put away by us before we went to the next venue. i had told the owner that my self, my husband, my inlaws ( who were also staying at clearview) and a few friends would be coming back around 9 for an hour and this was all okayed by the owner prior to the day. when we turned up the owners demaned $500 cash on the spot or we were told we would all have to leave. i was absoulutly discusted in this! we had left the place clean and tidy and we had paid for these rooms she had no right to be so rude. we ended up having to give her $100 cash then going to bed before 11pm anyway. we got up at 9 and tidyed up the last of our things. we left the place as it was when we arrived. we were served TINNED salmon and small pieces of shaved ham with eggs for breakie. we all saw the salmon tin that it came out of. to me this is discusting and totally unexeptable. we paid our bill and left. this place is not a 5 star hotel the service was discusting and the owners were very rude i would not reccommend this place to anybody

We refuse to stoop to the level that these guests have descended. You only need to read the first sentence 'me and my husband' to recognise the standards these guests are operating at, while the assertion that the salmon was 'tinned' is also a reflection on their inability to recognise quality, while the claim that the place was 'left as it was' is a sad testament to the low standards applied. The review(s) under the title of 'Wedding 2012 and Not 5 Star’ are nothing more than a collection of blatant lies, verging on the slanderous, purely designed to do nothing else than undermine our business. As with our previous management response, we leave it to travelers to make up their own mind by reading our other TripAdviser reviews for Clearview Lodge.

We stayed 2 nights with Robin & Sue and really enjoyed our first B&B experience. And the complimentary glass of wine fantastic. I do love my Pinot Noir.
The estate is beautiful and the entire house was immaculate. Thank you. Definitely recommend. We wish we had stayed longer.

Enormous room, comfy bed, lovely view of the gardens and vineyard. Hosts were perfect and made sure we had everything we needed. We were sad to have only stayed one night and missed the grape harvest the following day. Highly recommend and def worth a try.

Thanks Kelly and Rhys. Sorry you missed helping with the harvest. The only consolation is that you may be able to try the wine we are making from them, next time you are over. It was nice to have you back last night to hear about the wines of Marlborough and your loop around the top of the south Island. We hope you enjoy the rest of your trip trying the different wines we have, further south, in the South Island. You could always pop back in a couple of weeks and help when we pick the second half of our Pinot crop but I suspect there is a little girl waiting for you to come home. Thanks again.

I can't recommend staying here highly enough. I'd stay here forever if I could. The hosts were an absolute delight. They have fantastic wine. Breakfast was amazing. They grow so much of their own food and it's so amazing to have peaches at breakfast that were picked right outside the door. Also, if I can just say, they have the best cats! I'm a cat person, and was going through a bit of kitty withdrawal, and they have two cats who are super friendly and amazingly adorable. But I swear I'm not giving them 5 stars (or circles) because they have great cats. They called us in a reservation at the resort just down the road, so it was really easy to go for dinner. So, don't let the location dissuade you. I really can't recommend staying here enough. If I'm ever back, I would definitely stay here again. So wonderful!

Thank you and Monkey and Ella Bella thank you too . They love taking guests on walks around their garden. They seem to know when I take guests on a tour of the garden and vineyard, and have to tag along. We are cat people too and Ella Bella is cute but Monkey is is gorgeous with all that fluff. He is handsome and he knows it and shows off for the camera. It was great to meet you and your family. We hope to see you again next time you are in New Zealand. This is my favourite time of year too, with all the peaches, apples, blueberries, quince and walnuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts and we shouldn't forget the grapes. Thanks again.

Unfortunately we were only passing through and only able to stay one night. Our room was huge and very comfortable. On early evening arrival Sue addressed the necessities, getting dinner. She directed us to the restaurant at the golf club, a simple relaxing meal following a long day. On our return from dinner she and Robin gave us a glass of their wine. Next morning Robin made us each eggs benedict, wonderful. Following breakfast, Sue gave us a tour of the amazing gardens. Finally Sue gave us welcomed advice on our drive to Wanaka.
We would recommend Clearview Lodge and suggest you stay longer than we did.

My wife and I had never stayed in a bed and breakfast before and she was especially wary, but all of the excellent reviews persuaded her that the Clearview Lodge would be a great choice for our first. I'm afraid that the bar has been set so high, it will be a difficult experience to top.
We took a two week holiday with her parents that were visiting from the US. The first week in Melbourne, combined with their jet lag, made them really look forward to a more relaxing second week in New Zealand. Our hosts, Sue and Robin, were very accomodating and greeted us with with wine from their vineyards and olive oil from their groves.
One of the highlights of the trip for my mother-in-law was the tour that Sue gave us of the grounds and her beautiful gardens. And my father-in-law enjoyed the cats! Though I would have to say that his favorite part of the stay was being able to watch the Superbowl in the middle of the afternoon on the commfortable leather furniture in the guests' lounge.
Even before our arrival, Sue took great care of us! I was trying to book tickets on the Tranz Alpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth through the Southern Alps, but was having trouble from Singapore. Sue's efforts saved us hundreds of dollars on the round trip. Her sage advice to book our trip a day later when New Zealand had a national holiday saved us from from being disappointed in trying to see other local attractions that might have been closed.
The house was beautiful, well appointed, and very clean. Again, the grounds were gorgeous. But my personal favorite part of out stay was the breakfast that Robin and Sue took turns making us every morning! We had loads of fresh local fruit, breads, teas, and coffee. They were also very knowledgeable about local restaurants and the pizza delivery our first night saved us from having to venture out again after a long day of travel.
My wife's favorite was the treasure trove of menus from local restaurants she found in the guests' lounge upstairs! The location of the Clearview Lodge in a northern suburb of Christchurch made it very easy for us to enjoy great meals within a very short 10-15 minute drive. Not being used to driving on the left, that was literally a life-saver for me...

We did not plan to stay at Clearview. We had actually planned to stay in a hotel down the road which got flooded, so that hotel booked us into Clearview Lodge for the night. Very happy that they did.
The hosts were amazing. The house and grounds are impeccable. The breakfast was lovely and homely. I have no hesitation in recommending Clearview to everybody and should we ever be in the vicinity again, that is where we will be staying.
