Detailed Reviews
I am so happy that I found this place! First of all, the little trip by ferry to Diamond Harbour is already breath taking with its beautiful scenery and being in the retreat house made me feel so safe and calm. I wanted to gift a day spa to my husband's 40th birthday, but I didn't expect I was the one who would benefit the most with the massage and the emotional healing. Paru have caused a great impact, I felt like vomiting out everything that was inside me (and killing me). I have been in a bad way emotionally for almost a year, which I, unconsciously affected my partner and I never talked to him or anyone about it - so in the end, it became a couple's retreat and we left there very positive with the relationship and future ahead. I know I have a long road ahead, but Paru's words have brought me the strength to walk the path, knowing that I am strong so to do it and somehow there is something bigger than me watching and guiding. I couldn't thank Paru enough for this eye opening! Gratitude for her time and words and I strong recommend Shunyata Retreat for anyone feeling disconnected, ill (physically or mentally) or are simply looking for a beautiful spot for relaxation.

Wow – what an amazing experience I had, at this secret paradise in Diamond Harbour, Canterbury.
After a tough year, a friend recommended Paru's 3-day healing retreat between Christmas and New Year. I have to admit, I was hesitant to go at first but bit the bullet and made the journey to beautiful Diamond Harbour with little expectations. And I was blown away by the amazing experience, and great value for money I received at Shunyata Retreat.
Paru is an incredible host, with a warmth that makes you feel instantly welcome. She genuinely wants to get to know you, your story and identify how she can best help you during the 3 days. Each day started with lemon and water, a coffee, heartfelt chat and yoga on the deck overlooking the beautiful bays. Paru is an amazing cook and you will be spoiled to delights such as Chia Pudding and Healthy Eggs Bene for breakfast, Spanakopita for lunch and Mushroom Risotto or Salmon for dinner (with organic, wholesome treats in-between!). Her treatments included ‘journey healing’, meditation and use of the Ozone Sauna, along with beautiful massages and Cranial sacral therapy (CST). Paru also recognises the importance of having free time to relax and encouraged delightful swims in Diamond Harbour and time in the sun reading books.
Overall, Paru genuinely cares about your needs and refines her programme to suit each person individually. She really helped me unpack things that I need to change in my life for peace and happiness. I could not recommend Paru and Shunyata Retreat enough – and encourage everyone to pay her a visit 😊

After solo hiking 1400 km in 50 days in New Zealand, I felt like I needed a place to relax but most of all al place to reflect on some emotional/mental issues. I was extremely happy to find Paru and her retreat!
First of all, the place is located in an amazing place, with views over the water and hills. The retreat is filled with guided meditations, morning yoga on the deck, spiritual Journeys, sessions in a sauna, massage, a relaxing bath and much more. The food Paru cooks is fresh, healthy and veeeery tasty!
It is a very intimate retreat, with a lot of one-on-one time. You go deep into your past and emotions. Within no-time, Paru gets to the core of your personality and the things holding you back. I gained so much more consciousness about my personality and the importance of being authentic and acting out of love. Almost directly, Paru manages to give you the perfect books to read, meditations to do and videos to watch. Already in the second day of the retreat, my mind and emotions shifted from fear and looking at the past, to being inspired and really motivated to adress the issues holding me back.
Next to the regular things Paru had planned, she is available almost the entire day to talk to and help you when needed. We also drove to the sea together three times, just to go for a quick swim.
Keep in mind the retreat takes place in a very informal setting. You share lounge, kitchen, bathroom etc. with Paru and possible other guests. The private bedroom was cosy and the bed was very comfortable. The deck is truly amazing for relaxing and reading in the beanbags or hammock. Paru really looks out for her guests in a very loving way. She makes tea whenever you want, asks is everything is okay and most of all, she is a very inspiring person with many years of experience and education.
If you want a beautiful place to rest and spiritually grow, along with great food and relaxing massage/sauna, this is just the place for you!

Paru is quite literally a life saver. I had reached a point of crisis in my life, rock bottom even. Every aspect of my life was in ruins and I knew I was as far away from my true self as I could be. I didn’t want this for myself. It was an unbearable way to live. I reached out to Paru and she took me in at just the right time. Paru took me through a journey and guided me to look inwards and get to the causes of my pain and unconscious behaviours. I was able to feel them, let them go and forgive. I carried deep and heavy pain in my chest. I was beside myself with unbearable anxiety but by the end of this retreat I was genuinely free of it. The value of going inwards and doing so freely and safely is honestly the best form of love you can give yourself! Better than any antidepressant or avenue that doesn’t allow you to feel. We’re humans we need to feel our feelings and traumas. We need to process them or they’ll stay with us forever and constantly reappear as signals to do something. Trust the process. Trust yourself and do it!! It really, really works! Thank you so much Paru, you’re truly remarkable. I will never forget this experience.

Firstly just to say, I didn't actually do this 'retreat'. I signed up for it, paid a big deposit, not thinking for a moment that I would be doing it alone, a one on one with this woman offering 'retreats' from her house. I had honestly never heard of such a thing before. When I realised the set up, appr ten days before the retreat, ( yes, in hindsight I should have double checked this) I was very uneasy and explained I just wouldnt be comfortable doing a one on one. I thought there would be others andI explained this,as best I could. But Para was relentless, coaxed me to stick with it, said she would try to advertise for another person ...which I must say I found very strange! . I realised then and subsequent emails later that this was all a bit suspect and I should have paid more attention as I did feel that Paru had lacked professionalism from the get go. It was clear then that she was simply desperate for clients.
To my regret, it was only at that stage that I began to read other, more honest ,reviews which made more sense and sent off alarm bells.. I cancelled, giving plenty of notice but Paru became quite enraged at that point, said she'd alreafy gotten food in...which didnt say much for its freshness .🤔
I knew then that she would not return my 300 dollar deposit, not even a proportion of it which was terribly unfair and short sighted of her and didn't say much for ' healing retreats! -' A total joke, to be honest, and massive lesson to look at reviews more carefully and be wary of money grabbers like this woman and their large non-refundable. Steer well clear!

Everyone has a different story! I just counted the 35 emails exchanged from October where deborah was trying to find a retreat for xmas day. I said I would come back early on holiday for the 27th of december. As everyone knows covid has killed many small businesses and NZ has their main holidays between xmas and new year but got the place ready and cooked up food so it was all ready for my return. 10 days before she hadn't read the website which states very clearly one on one max 3 people, also the booking form which reads deposit non refundable so when she decided to cancel after I offered her to advertise for another on google ads, she got upset when she wasn't getting her deposit back and used spiritual blackmail on me saying I wasn't very spiritual. Deborah I hope you found a place where you could make friends in a big retreat so you wouldn't be so alone cause opening my home to you wouldn't have been a good idea afterall. I run a business with heart and you can check google and here for top genuine reviews.

"I didn't know it at the time, but I was totally blessed when I found Shunyata Retreat and the diamond in Diamond Harbour that is Paru.
I arrived exhausted and depleted and left exhilarated and full. The attention, treatments, energy and food that Paru provides with passion and skill are incredible and life changing.
I got so much more than I ever thought I would from my 5 days at Shunyata and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is ready either for a major shift in their being, or just a total pamper of mind, body and soul.
Thank you Paru for my new lease on life.
Now it is up to me...

I was in Shunyata for a detox retreat and it was a most wonderful experience. Paru was so caring, and cooked the most delicious and nutricious meals.
Her Journey session and treatments were life changing! She introduced me to the Enneagram types and I felt so empowered to know my type and to know how powerful and truly unique I am!
I can't want to go back! :)

I had a fantastic stay with Paru. She instantly made me feel welcome and at home. She really helped me with working through a lot of internal issues and learning more about myself along the way. Her retreat is in a beautiful spot in Diamond Harbor, with lovely views and walks all around. Her Yoga practice that she offers in the morning is amazing and really sets you up for the day :)
Paru has helped motivate me to keep learning about myself and to become a healthier version of me.
Thankyou Paru!

The bottom line of my stay is that the clear lack of cleanliness let me to leave on the second day of my intended 10 day retreat. I left feeling greatly disappointed of what had appeared so promising on her website as well as based on others' reviews.
I came to Shunyata feeling quite vulnerable, but full of hope that these 10 days would make a real difference to my health. However it did not quite turn out that way.
On a positive note, I would like to mention the beauty of the location of Paru's home as well as the nice view that I also had from my room. It is also a very personal retreat with Paru being around literally 24/7 to make you feel at ease. For example, she offered a detox bath at night and gave me some of her precious oil when I felt unwell after the sauna.
Nevertheless, cleanliness is of great importance at a health retreat and in many ways, I could observe that this was not the case at Shunyata. Just to give an example, Paru had bread slices defrosting on her stove, which was very dirty. It just gave me a shiver. Also trying to find a clean glass to fill with some water was a challenge. This clearly isn't okay when you offer health retreats at your home. As a result the sheer thought of having an enema done at a place where I distrust cleanliness, made me feel uncomfortable.
To mention just a few other more minor things, I was disappointed of the yoga that Paru offered in the morning. Having studied a bit of yoga myself and having had different teachers, I doubt that Paru had really much of an idea about what she was doing there. Further, as Paru claims to offer an ayurvedic health experience, I was surprised how she is giving mostly the same meals for everyone. For example, I am a vata type and I know I should not have something cold in the morning. Still she offered me a green smoothie that really tasted nice but that made me feel bloated and cold 10 minutes later.
Eventuelly, without being indiscrete, Paru was talking a lot about her own health complaints that seemed that extensive that I just lacked confidence in her ability to heal others.
In a nutshell, my stay was quite disappointing and I am glad I had not paid more than the $300 deposit in advance. I am proud that I dared to be assertive enough to leave early on and did not just swallow what clearly was not going well there. I hope that Paru takes this as a wakeup call to reconsider how she is running her business in this promising

Anja Plagemann or Pueppi Shulz - the names weren't the same but I run a small personal business and this comment on my trip advisor concerned me greatly. You would have had a reason to go under another name I am sure. I understand your fear of doing the enema - we are all living in fear or love all the time and I understand how all that fear got projected onto me and Shunyata. The place was clean - my assistant and myself had spent 2 days cleaning, but I do admit I should have covered the bread and will take that on board and the glasses were always there and clean. As far as my knowledge around yoga,, you had just come from a yoga retreat and I said everyone does yoga differently and I never told you I was anything but a beginners yoga teacher and feel so blessed that for 10 years people have taken up yoga after being at Shunyata. My time with ayurveda has been also quite in depth, having done many panchakarma treatments in India and studying also in India and giving you a smoothie that wasn't warm was not my reflection on my knowledge of ayurveda. This is another quality I had to let go of when working with people - self righteousness. But I understand all this came out of your fear. When I took you back to the ferry, you were still feeling this deep fear and we feel this imbalance when we get ill - as I well know. I only spoke of my illness to help you from my experience and I am sorry you didn't gain from it. Anja I had held your booking for approximately 2 months at the old price and I treated you with love and respect and you didn't honour your payment. and I cancelled other people to hold your booking. I am so sorry that you couldn't have done the deep healing that so many other people have benefited from in Shunyata in the last 10 years, but I feel the projection on my business was what was going on inside of you and I feel very offended by your comments. I hope other people won't let this fear ruin an amazing experience of special one on one assistance in emotional and physical healing. Deep love to you and your future work with people and good luck with your health and I hope you find the place that suits you. For 10 years I have never had a person so disgruntled with Shunyata as per the other comments and it saddens me deeply.
