Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Very friendly and heplful staff who looked after us when we decided to change rooms We went to a bigger room and which was very comfortable as we were staying for four nights. Would recomment to stay ther again if were in New Zealand, as it was very close to our friends who lived a few streets away

We were heading to Chch for the Pearl Jam concert, and chose Ferry Motel as it's very close to AMI Stadium. It's a little place, only about a dozen rooms, and it's very reasonably priced - $100NZ per night. It definately needs updating, as it's very worn down and dated. But, it is clean (and thats the main thing in my book), and for the price I think it serves its purpose.

Great place for stay at east bound of Christchurch, arranged airport pick up and drop off, got free as their promotion. Motel staff warmly welcome us and lead us to our two bedroom unit, seems like a family villa got 2 stories. A bit large for us tho, water pressure is not very good, we told them, bathroom is not that great but as long as they work well. Room was very clean and spacious, we recommend to friend. Thank you.

This review is written on behalf of a family member who made a surprise visit to Christchurch. The motel was booked on line and the photographs displayed on line portrayed bright airey and cheerful rooms. In reality it was old, dark and the room smelt old and musty. On check in the traveler was as ked if she was going to cook in the unit and when the response was no she was advised that's good the oven doesn't work. The electric range was dirty and missing the handle for the oven door. there was a hole in the wall above the range. While the unit had been cleaned surfaces and taps had a greasy feel about them. There was a visible gap around the door of the unit prompting the traveler to wedge a chair against it to increase her feeling of security. The shower had mould around the base and the water pressure was pathetic. This unit cost $145 per night which for the age and state of the unit was an exorbitant price. When we saw the state of the unit we moved the family member into our B & B as we could have her stay in such conditions even though she had booked 2 nights. On seeing the room I would honestly say it was one of the worst if not the worst I have ever seen. I would not have stayed here. I personally viewed the room. A complaint has been sent to the booking site

When I read the mixed good and poor reviews of this motel, I thought of giving it a try as it seems it has improved given the recent customer feedback.

Little did I knew how all the review of the poor facilities came into real true picture. I believe there was no change at all after these years. The motel facilities were still poorly maintained and how unlucky, we were scammed by the manager, Mark. A few of his in-house facilities were already damaged and he insisted that we were the ones who did it. Though we explained that we saw the small defect hole in the front kitchen door, he denied our claims saying that we should report it earlier. Look, his facilities were already flawed of minor and major defects, which is well expected from his motel, to the point that we as tourists weren't even sure what to report and what not to.

Now, we were his scapegoats and he has no guilt conscience to outrightly want us to pay for his already damaged kitchen door. The way he handled this case was even more misleading to fool you to believe you have caused a big damage and created panic for the whole trip. He sent an email with an enlarged picture of his own small defect to paint a big damage that we have created and the rest is really pointless to share as the 45 mins conversation was just how insistent he was out there to get our money.

Yes to all the first day warm greetings. He served us well too but, till the end, he was just trying to make sure he could get more money out from us. I think -A wolf in a sheep's clothing- is the best description.

Give it a try if you want an unpleasant and nasty experience dealing with poor management skills. I can't explain the pain and stress that you have to go through just to prove your point that it was not your doing and the "manager" just wanted to dig money from you. I must say this is not the way an incident is handled. Please refund your money to save yourself from landing a terrible time in New Zealand, which is really in fact a cool and wonderful place to be in.

Please let all the negative reviews speak for itself and stop saying the words. Use your heart to listen and upgrade the infrastructure and improve the way you treat your overseas tourists who are really there to enjoy and not to be messed up by your profiteering mindset. Your facilities need upgrading from your own money not from other means. Hope you understand.

I think that this place needs to be shut down... Unsafe fitting bathroom hot tap moves with you as you turn it.

Outdated furniture and bedding riddled with fleas. No air-conditioning we stayed when the temperature was 30 degrees plus and only 2 Windows that opened.

For $150 per night I could have got a better place... Bloody ripoff!!!

This place is a rip off. Noisy guests. Could hear the people in next room urinating. Full off drunks. Filth pit cold not enough blankets. Second hand store quality furniture. Could have stayed in five star for same price. Don't be unfortunate as us

Not a place I would stay at again. Bed linen was soiled (Laundry contractors fault apparently), fridge hadn't been wiped out from last guests and we found some kids socks and a filled salad roll under one of the beds! Water pressure in the shower was poor and cups were chipped. For the price I would have expected better. Friendly staff though.

Ferry Motel was the best of about 10 different hotels we stayed at on a recent Kayak tour throughout New Zealand, ending in Christchurch. And, it had affordable rates of $120 per night. Recently upgraded, nice bath rooms, and lovely garden, clean, helpful and friendly staff, plenty of towels, a rarity for NZ. Owner operated shows in customer service and hard work. We liked this place so much, it is the only place we will stay at in Christchurch, should we go again. Keep the bathroom door closed when showering, or it will set off smoke alarm. Very small inconvenience for such a nice place.

The service is pretty good. The place is outdated which i don't mind but they could use better beddings (the bed cover thing really put me off), better plumbing system (toilet is super noisy when you flush - room #2) and better cleanliness. I found some hairs and stain on the bed sheet. :( oh also found a small bug in the bathroom to add in to my nightmare.
Chose the place due to very limited choices on that day throughout the city (did not know if there's any special occassion on that day)
