Powered by AI
The George Christchurch hotel is often celebrated for its luxurious and inviting atmosphere, with guests enjoying the well-appointed, clean, and comfortable rooms, despite some remarks about their size and dated decor. Its location is a hit for its proximity to parks and the city center, albeit a short stroll from downtown attractions.
While the hotel's cleanliness and service generally earn high marks for professionalism and friendliness, the value proposition is questioned by guests who find the food pricey and the services not quite aligning with their cost. Amenities are well-regarded, though dining options are sometimes perceived as limited.

Hotel's Favourite
We got this lovely hotel in a vacation package, but now that I know about it, it would be my first choice in Christchurch. The George is staffed by some of the most friendly, considerate, and informative staff around. It is ideally located near the botanical gardens and about a 15 minute walk from the Riverside Market and center of town. The room was very nice, turn down service with a special treat! They also have free self laundry which came in very handy for us. Would definitely stay here again.

We were very happy with our room looking into the tall trees and felt as if we were in the bush, quiet and peaceful.
The room was spacious with a super king bed, 2 comfy armchairs, a writing desk, a big TV and a good size wardrobe with plenty of hangers, which were important for a few day stay. The temperature control in the room was great.
The bathroom had all the amenities and underfloor heating.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful, they seemed to know all their guests, especially at the front desk.
The complementary self service laundry had a few machines, dryers and laundry baskets. It was handy for travellers.
We enjoyed the complementary cups of coffee delivered to our room when we first arrived; and the lovely teddy with the turn down service every evening + chocolates. Not all 5 star hotels have these little touches.
The hotel restaurant 50 Bistro was excellent, we had dinner with friends and we all enjoyed our meals.
We would definitely return, and highly recommended.

A boutique Hotel located near the centre of Christchurch opposite Hagley Park. We were part of a tour group and arrived a day early to be greeted at the door by name and handed the keys to our room. The room was spacious and very comfortable and all amenities in the room. The staff were friendly but professional. There were good choices in the menu for dinner, which was a bit pricey and breakfast was buffet with a variety of choices. A great hotel and would stay again if ever in Christchurch.

Having stayed in a different hotel in Christchurch the night before which cost 40% less, we were disappointed about the condition and facilities of the hotel. The outside looks tired as do the rooms.
For the price paid there was a very expensive minibar (free in previous hotel) where a half bottle of wine was $35. The windows didn’t seal properly, the chair was faded and dirty and the shower curtain wasn’t clean and was like a rag. The TV remote was so poor I had to attach a picture.
The bar food wasn’t brilliant either and the bar prices were expensive. They claim to have a member of staff to each guest but you pay for that...
You got a free teddy if you wanted it but you’d have paid for it in the room cost.
Sorry - not a favourite.

The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Our room was very modern, clean & comfortable. Breakfast was a standard buffet with a good menu of cooked choices (some of which are charged as extra). The hotel is right opposite the park with the botanical gardens and a 15 minute walk from the city centre.

The George is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World but I’d say that overall it comes over a more of a comfortable business hotel than boutique luxury
Our reception staff member was very helpful , swooping our room next to the main road and upgrading to a third floor room in the executive block . It’s was very comfortable, well equipped with good bed and bedding and decent if not lux bathroom
We chose not to eat dinner in the hotel as Christchurch has far better choices than the limited hotel bistro menu . Next morning our breakfast illustrated the limitations . The buffet is average rather the special homemade choices you might now expect in a boutique or lovely lodge ; for example the bread tasted like mainstream multigrain rather than a bakery sourdough choice . The Muesli was very sweet and somewhat bland rather than tasting homemade . Boiled eggs came without a small spoon or butter for the underdone toast ( collect it yourself from the buffet along with butter ) . So breakfast food was decently priced but pretty underwhelming
We had a comfortable stay in a located hotel - but not quite the experience we might have expected

The George did not live up to my expectations. There is nothing wrong with this hotel, but it felt a little soulless and was quite expensive. Our room was small for myself and my two teenagers, especially for the price. This property calls itself a luxury 5-star boutique hotel, so I had specific expectations. The bathrooms are very modern, and some of the amenities feel like a small luxury hotel, but overall I feel that this property needs a little more luxury. The rooms are small, ceilings are low, the lobby is okay, and the outside of the building looks like it needs an overhaul.
Parking our camper van was accessible, which was nice after driving all day!!!
Don’t even bother going to the gym! The gym is located in a nearby hotel and not nice at all. We lasted one minute and quickly left. You can, however, go on a beautiful, long, and peaceful run in the parks across the street.
My favorite part of the property was the bartender Keith who was lovely, smiled, made a great margarita, and provided local recommendations.
We left the following morning and stayed in another property nearby and had a much better experience for a lower price! We most likely will not return to The George!

Located away from the (normally) busy Square and across from Hagley Park, this is a quiet hotel. A short walk to everywhere. We stayed in the Residence Loft apartment ...room 603. A couple of steep flights of stairs leads to a cosy, sunny apartment. Staff were happy to help with suitcases.
The recent refurbishment is to a high standard with lots of automation - lights, TVs, blinds etc. It takes a bit of trial and error, but everything seemed to work fine. High speed wifi (80/20 Mb/s) and many USB, HDMI ports.
A full kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, stove top but no oven. We would have used something to wipe down the benches and table if they had been provided. A very nice bathroom with great natural light. Comfortable bed. Would be worth a longer stay. We shall return, when we are allowed out to play.

With a park and lovely botanical garden across the road and a short walk to the city centre, The George was in a great spot for guests like us without a car. There was a country club feel to the welcoming lobby and bar. Our 2nd floor room, reached by elevator, provided a pleasant outlook onto the trees bordering the park and was comfortable in every respect. The shower was in the bath, actually a great soaking shower over the bath.
The gourmet dinner menu offered some interesting and delicious choices, but breakfast was rather light on options compared with most other hotels on our New Zealand tour. We would certainly choose The George again, though, if we returned to Christchurch.

We booked at The George for a business trip to Christchurch, 4 nights 31/10 - 03/11 checking out on the morning of the 4th November. We wanted something central with good amenities. We liked the fact that The George is not a big hotel with a commercial feel to it. It was a smaller boutique feeling. We arrived to a warm greeting from the concierge. He checked us in. There was a computer issue saving our credit card, but they managed to get that resolved. We were offered a welcome beverage at the conclusion of the check-in.
After check in the concierge showed us to our room and asked us if we needed to be shown anything in the room which we did not. We could however read up on everything in the excellent information provided in the room.
The beverage was delivered to our room but it did take quite a while to arrive and I had a business meeting to get to so it was all a bit rushed.
The room was clean and really well appointed. I really liked the fact we had a bath in our room. The bed was very comfortable. The in room safe and excellent storage was an added bonus. The amenities were great. We especially liked the excellent lighting and heating set up in the room, we did like the fact we had an end room 117, as we had the extra window to provide extra lighting which was great.
The attention to detail was fantastic. It was like they had thought of absolutely everything. We appreciated coming back from dinner on the first night and finding the George bear on our bed as part of turn down. This was a nice touch. It was great to have a warm farewell and greeting each time we came and went from the hotel either by the concierge or reception.
The lobby/lounge area of the hotel was great you had enough seating setups to be able to get a little bit of work done while having a drink or waiting for someone.
At times the car park was quite full given that they seem to hold meetings/conferences in the hotel during the day time. There is street parking if needed though. It is centrally located and right across the road from Hagley park which is great for walks. It is a short walk to the city centre so everything is accessible without being right in the centre. The room was serviced every day and they always did an excellent job.
A special thanks to all the housekeeping staff who always acknowledged and greeted us in the hallway, definitely a sign of a high performing team culture for a business.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay again.

Hi yes - decent hair dryers! Lovely shower products / facilities. They have laundry services but they also have facilities to do your own laundry . And finally they leave a gorgeous little bear “ George” on your bed on your last night for you to take home with you .
Hope that helps
We enjoyed the hotel as a boutique hotel very much! Ask for one of the more decorative room in the rear part of the hotel with access to a private garden and lounge. No pool but you will not be disappointed with the food and service.
Hi Joanna, congrats on your forthcoming wedding. Your question was posted on my review but think you need to email the George Hotel. It’s a lovely hotel and staff are really helpful so would recommend you get in touch with them.
