Christchurch is a long way from the Mediterranean - nevertheless, the opulence of an Italian High Renaissance Palazzo awaits you at the Heritage Christchurch. Designed by Joseph Clark Maddison and opened in 1913, the hotel is listed as a category one building on the Historic Places Trust Register, reflecting its status as a building of national significance. The hotel's grand design is fitting: after all, Christchurch is regarded as the Garden City, and is regarded internationally for its culture and refinement.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful historic building in very central location close to all key attractions in Christchurch. The suites are roomy, comfortable and well appointed with kitchen and laundry facilities. Our two bedroom had two bathrooms plus lounge and dining space. The beds were fabulous.

We stayed several nights in the hotel and it was a unique experience. The building is apparently of national significance. It is full of character having been an old government building. The rooms are very spacious & ours was equipped with a washing machine & dryer which was handy after travelling for a while. Staff were helpful & the bar at the front of the hotel is a nice place to relax with some live music. It’s in a great location to explore Christchurch or to catch the hop - on hop -off tram. Would stay again!

A central city hotel with beautiful character and steeped in history. We found it was much cheaper booking direct. While my husband loved it, I did find the pub downstairs was a little noisey for me but to be expected in the city centre. On the plus side there is not much noise after midnight. Valet parking at $20 per night is well worth the money and the tram nearby made it easy to hop and off at different parts around town such as the River Markets. We ate dinner at the OGB (attached to the Heritage) and then the next day High Tea at the nearby gumption restaurant (part of Distinction Hotel). Dinner was a typical pub meal and hoot the spot nicely. Gumption was my favourite, and I loved the High Tea - highly recommended. Remember it is an older style building, so it has charm and is a bit of an old soul. The pool was fabulous and the gym very big. Great place to stay that is central, good value and has a rich history attached. I look forward to the Cathedral being finished. Once that is complete it will only add to the experience.

Dated property. No staff to help with luggage. One receptionist who was the valet and concierge. For the price of $530 .00 per night!!! I expect a certain standard. No room service. Couldn’t even charge our drinks to the room in the bar in the hotel. No air condition!!!! We had our smoke alarm go off ( our mistake) - it rang for a good 5- 6 minutes. NO - ONE showed up!!!! The bathrobe in our room had stains! Housekeeping came by but left our coffee mug with coffee and French press with coffee there for us to clean!!! The lobby smells musty and elevator smells of rotten vegetables. The carpet is frayed and old. The reception is depressing with multiple dining tables???? The Novotel across the street looks better.

Disappointed in the Heritage Christchurch , the rooms desperately need revamping . The couch was a disgusting colour , I put a blanket over it . I’ve been coming to the Heritage since 2013 , same furnishings . We ran out of hot water as well . Rooms were very clean though re bathrooms/ beds / kitchen . But for $405 for a 2 bed apartment over priced until they revamp rooms . I won’t be back

Dear Frankieh335, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Heritage Christchurch. We appreciate your loyalty as a returning guest since 2013, and we are genuinely sorry to hear about your disappointment this time around. We understand your concerns about the room furnishings and are continuously working on enhancing our accommodations. We want to inform you that the Heritage Christchurch is situated in a heritage-listed building, which limits our ability to make structural modifications, including room renovations. However, please note that each suite has its own hot water cylinder, which ensures that you have a dedicated and consistent hot water supply during your stay. We apologize for any inconvenience you experienced in this regard and appreciate your understanding of our structural limitations. We are pleased to hear that you found the rooms clean and well-maintained in terms of bathrooms, beds, and the kitchen area. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we will take your comments into consideration as we continually strive to improve our guests' experience. We are committed to providing our guests with exceptional service and comfortable accommodations, and we regret that we fell short of your expectations this time. We appreciate your feedback and hope you will consider giving us another opportunity to provide you with a more enjoyable stay in the future.

The building reminded me of the original (now completely rebuilt as the five star Lalit) Great Eastern Hotel in Calcutta (now Kolkata) - with huge hallways and expansive stairways. The room we were in was massive, on two levels, with a kitchen and washing machine and dryer. The view from the window was of the tram terminus across the road. A few minutes stroll to Cathedral Square and the CBD shopping precinct, an ideal area to stay. Everything worked in the room. Downstairs is a great atmospheric bar. Highly recommended hotel in Christchurch.

We were surprised to find we had a mini apartment which allowed us to have family and friends visit for drinks and dinner. The GPO bar were very accommodating in loaning us glasses for our guests. There is no parking unless you pay for it. The room was very quiet, mind you we were at the far rear of the building. There are two types of accommodation. Some are rented out by the GPO and some by the Heritage so make sure you know which is which as they vary greatly. There is a lift between the 3 levels if you don't use stairs. The central doors to the accommodation is locked after a certain time to prevent people wandering where they shouldn't. No room service but we bought beers and wine from the bar in the building. This bar is very upmarket and the staff are amazing. We then ordered uber eats for dinner. It was excellent. Highly recommend the Suites. The suite was dated but that is the whole concept of being here. You are transported back in time.

Yuck!! From the moment we arrived and we had to carry out bags up stairs to reception through the middle of a bar/ restaurant I was NOT impressed and I was thinking what if you were disable how the f@&k do u get into the place!!!!🤬 No one came to help either. Check in lady wasn’t friendly either I want to leave right t there and check in over the road but she told me it would cost me two nights 🤬 Nothing like the reviews and photos online The building is beautiful don’t get me wrong and to get to your room I left like I was walking through a government building The furniture was OLD with stains on the chairs etc the couch was torn and ripped. The room smelt. It was hodge podge of tile, carpet that had never been cleaned, and basically old. Now I get it the bulging is old BUT u can update furnishings etc. The room had potential it was big upstairs and downstairs, it had a washer and dryer, which when on kept tripping the main power switch🙈 It is close and right in the city you can walk to everything but for the PRICE sharp around. There are quest apartments close which maybe a better option. We ended up leaving after our mandatory time to the Distinction hotel nextdoor in a standard room no washer and dryer or kitchen etc as we didn’t want to be at the Heritage anymore Buyer beware

How many adjectives can I use to explain our experience with this magnificent establishment? Beautiful, classy, pristine, welcoming, warm! It is a step back in time in the right way. They have encapsulated the essence of what the early 1900s may have been like with the bar staff being spot on, cheerful and skilled. The decor is grand, making you picture the pastimes grandeur. The pool and gym area are to die for and it takes on a different feel when u are beneath ground level. Our two bedroom suite was no less than perfect in every way. Bed comfy and huge, bathrooms on point. Even with a 12 yr child in tow, we were never made to feel less than welcomed and special. No road noise, no neighbouring sounds. Even the gentleman doing the early morning cleanup on the entrance was pleasant and helpful. Will return next time we visit Christchurch.

We were a little concerned by the apparent lack of security measures - it would seem that anyone can just wander into the hotel from the busy streets below, or from the attached restaurant/bar. Also concerning was the lack of displayed evacuation/safety information in the room. This is a very regal looking building, standing closely amidst several still to be demolished tall structures the earthquakes have left behind. A little unnerving to look out the windows to this particular vista though. While the beautiful wide hallways and impressive stairway, along with very generously sized suites are brilliant, they still couldn’t hide the fact that this facility is tired. Shame to find on our arrival that some of the hooks in the lounge drapes were missing - didn’t help the tired decor look. Clean, and the beds were divinely comfortable, and did I mention the size of the suites? Fantastic. No room service unfortunately. Staff were very pleasant and so obliging.
