This is a good hotel in the centre of Christchurch. It has a friendly feel and our room was a good size with a nice en suite bathroom. We were also fortunate to get a room with a view over the square and the cathedral.

The only down side is that it is popular with coach tours and the hotels own restaurant can easily get full very quickly. This is not reallya problem as there are tons of other places to eat in Christchurch.

My stay in this hotel was alright. The hotel was quiet. The room was very spacious. The bathroom was nice but the shower spray could be improved. The staff was efficient. Could watch Sky Movies. Good central location. Would probably return.

Stayed here around Christmas 2003. It was a good hotel with clean, comfortable rooms. Quite a bit of noise at night from the bar downstairs and there weren't enough keys for all four of us staying in the one room so we had to keep asking reception to let us in if returning at different times. The service could be a little slow but overall I'd recommend this hotel to budget travellers

We stayed the night of February 21st and were fortunate to have left Christchurch 3 hours before before the February 22nd earthquake struck.

I really hope this hotel reopens and the owners and staff are all OK. The hotel is still standing after the quake.

It's in a great position next to the cathedral and offered excelent value. Rooms were clean and adequate and breakfast was good - hot food cooked to order. DService was great

I suppose you really do get what you pay for at this hotel. When my travel companions and I came into Christchurch, our horrific hotel experience began with the fact that there is nowhere to park and there are no valet services readily offered to help you with the situation. When we finally got up to our room, the sheets didn't seem very clean, the bed wasn't made very nicely, and it was freezing cold. There were stains on the carpet that looked not good, there were huge nicks taken out of the paint on the wall, and we were given one queen sized bed for all three adult travelers, even after we had made reservations and made it clear there were three of us. We had planned on staying in Christchurch for 2 days. We stayed for 4 hours. This hotel just does not make a good impression. We even considered asking if there was any space at the hostel next door, which appeared to be light years cleaner.

Upon checking into our room (almost midnight after a long day's drive), we discovered that it was not what we had reserved. We had asked for a room with one large bed and two singles, and instead the room had two large beds. When we went back to the lobby, the guy actually said "no no, the one big bed splits in two". Just in case, we looked again--and no such thing! Upon a second trip, the "busy" worker had to finally take the two seconds to look at his computer hotel layout, which revealed that--aha--we were right. (sigh)
The facilities were just passable; the beds were musty, the sink in the laundry room was jammed and filled with fetid water, and the noise from the nearby bar was noticeable even on the 5th floor where we were.
But the staff's laziness had yet to peak--
We were proceeding on a road trip from there to Queenstown, flying back to Christchurch en route to our home in the USA, and the hotel agreed to hold onto some of our excess baggage for those few days. We gave them a credit card number to book our two bags on a cab to the airport when we were returning (our flight to Australia was leaving from Christchurch). Unfortunately, our flight returning to Christchurch was cancelled, so we weren't there to pick up the bags and the cabbie returned them to the hotel. However, when we finally did arrive back in Christchurch, and went to the hotel (again, after driving an eternity) that evening, they told us that the bags must be at the airport, "because there's nothing in the area where we keep that stuff right now". This, again, without a second of movement from the seat that the employee was on, to physically go check anywhere. Upon our arrival at the airport for our 4am flight, we discovered that OOPS, the luggage WAS still at the hotel, a fact which was ultimately confirmed via phone once we were already in Australia, awaiting our flight back to the States. Needless to say, the hotel has never heard of "the customer is always right"--they proceeded to whine that "we weren't there when the cabbie went" (as though that had anything to do with their misinforming us to our face!), and of course they were unwilling to ship the bags to us without charge (in the neighborhood of $600 they said). Avoid this hotel at ALL costs--with staff that lethally incompetent, who knows what mishap may befall you!

We stayed for three nights at the Camelot before travelling on to Queenstown. Christchurch itself is a beautiful city and has a very European feel to it. We actually spent very little time in the hotel!

The hotel itself was perfect for us. We paid only 59NZD per room per night which was as cheap as a hostel. The hotel is situated on cathedral square and overlooks the Cathedral itself. We checked in quite late as our flight got in late. Check in was quick and easy. Our room was quite large with two queen size beds. Room quite basic. Had old enough TV and tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was fine, bit of a strange smell!!! but other than that it was clean. The room had a heater which was sufficent to heat the large room. Cleaning service done daily and if u wish not to be disturbed they leave towels, toilet roll etc outside the room which was good. Overall the rooms are dated and basic but considering the price it was perfect for us and beats sharing a dorm in a hostel!!

We ate lunch in the hotel restaurant which was really cheap- 2 courses for 10NZD. Food was ok nothing spectacular. We also had breakfast the morning we left for 15NZD we had cooked breakfast which wasn't good at all and could also help ourselves to cereal, toast, coffee etc. I would in future just stick to that and avoid the cooked breakfast or eat elsewhere.

Staff were very friendly in the hotel and the restaurant. They also dont have internet acess which I would have liked. I would recommend this hotel for anyone on a budget. Can't beat the location!!

I booked this hotel before checking trip advisor (I know, I know, not the smartest!), and when I read the reviews was really apprehensive about my stay... I needn't have worried - the room was clean and incredibly spacious, and while its not the newest place around, there was nothing wrong with the decor. I was travelling on my own to see the Ron Mueck exhibition, so wanted to keep my costs down, and I feel I got a great deal with this hotel.
Friendly smiling staff (all of them!), comfortable bed, and a location that was convenient to everything. I really enjoyed my stay, and would happily return!

Arrived and was pleased to see position and that we had a view overlooking cathedral square.
Room was large two double beds with electric blanket, but we always travel with hot water bottle.
The reviews we had read were correct,it is noisy at night as the backpackers is next door and being central to other hotels the square is a stop and drop, but if the noise worries you,use some ear pugs,we found the views worth putting up with the noise ,espessially as it rained non stop day and night for the 7 days and nights,so was great to sit with a fan radiater ,sipping a drink and looking out over the square at all that was happening outside.
Yes there is bell ringing practice at the cathedral for 2 hours tuesday, but we enjoyed it.
The staff all nice and helpful, while it is a budget hotel,it was better than we expected.
Was not impressed with the breakfast, better value at Bailles part of the old warner hotel near by.
A shame as breakfast was dissapointing made us decide not to eat in the restuarant for other meals.
Did enjoy the meals at Bailees, close by.
The highlight of trip was the Tranzalpine rail trip, light snow on top of several mountain peaks, great commentary ,terrific staff, also great to get free pick up to train, and only 5.OO TRANSFER BACK.Terrific so close to free city circle bus, free to top shops and frr bus to casino, cheap meals at casino, but did find the buffet lunch had gone back from last visit was dissapointed.
It was the wettest period on record, but because of our great view we still had a good time.
We also enjoyed the church service on sunday morning, and after a bit of a hassle we found the right metro bus that got us to,northland and westfield, great airflight with pacific blue ,
Back home and saving hard to have another adventure ,thanks to everyone who submits to trip advisor enabling us to have great budget holidays
