Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel and property are breathtaking! It’s like taking a step back in time upon arrival to a wonderful piece of academic history. The hotel is luxurious, offering every amenity you could ever want and the customer service is unmatched. Just as an add the hotel smells amazing! We will be back and next time for longer! The rooms are warm and welcoming, beds are super comfy, and in room offers are fantastic. I seriously cannot recommend this hotel high enough!

It felt like a real treat to stay here - the reception and rooms were beautifully decorated and it’s in a super central location in the heart of a historic hub. Nice coffee maker and toiletries in the bathroom. Staff were welcoming and friendly. We were given a complimentary room upgrade which was appreciated. I would have given it 5 stars but the breakfast was a bit of a let down given the star rating of the hotel. Breads, yoghurts, cheese ham and a few warm options (pancake/muffin) but tricky if you’re trying to avoid carbs. Also in a small room on the third floor which was very plain and at odds with the rest of the internal hotel decoration.

Loved the decor and vibe at The Observatory--I was only there for a single night, but really liked the hotel. THey don't do a great job with breakfast, which was all carbs and not very much protein...other than that, a really stellar place to stay, right next to the beautiful botanical gardens. A great spot from which to explore Christchurch.

Despite being one of the most expensive hotels in Christchurch, the experience does not match the cost. Front office staff were bordering on unpleasant, check in time was over 15 minutes, the hotel facilities are minimal with no bar and no kitchen, breakfast was sparse and the rooms are small with no room to work. Parking is minimal on site, we were told instructions would be sent to us but they never came. And parking fees were added ($30) without our knowledge or consent at the end. Great decor and historical features but that alone is not enough to justify the price or to entice us back.

Literally within the Arts Centre of Otautahi, there could not be a more perfect base for culture lovers! Surrounded by galleries (including easy stroll to the wonderful Christchurch Art Gallery), eateries (the Cellar Door, open 7 days, not to be missed!), a cinema, & museums. This beautifully appointed boutique hotel is nestled in the neo-gothic cloisters of the original C19 University of Canterbury. It delivers all the contemporary comforts, style & service you could possibly hope for; serendipitous sculptural surprises (new & old); & expansive Christchurch Botanic Gardens right across the street for your green fix. On-site gym, and breakfast conservatory, complete the ideal stay : )

Christchurch is a lovely city. This hotel is in the old university (relocated) and rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake - we saw photos of that tower demolished to around half its current height. Excellent location. The buildings around are the arts centre with all that it implies, and is about 7-8 minutes walk from the city centre (or NZD8 for an uber) and right by the botanic gardens and the river. Posh lounge. Bean-to-cup coffee machine is complementary. Rooms are well appointed (it's a generality that city hotels have smaller rooms but are of higher quality) and it was not their fault that the tour bus started up his engine at 7am on a Sunday on the road outside our window! Stay here.

Checked in to the observatory for two nights. Beautiful boutique located across the street from ChristChurch botanical gardens. Rooms are well appointed and very clean. Shower is great. Wi-Fi works very well. Small gym and breakfast offering! A few blocks from market as well with many upscale restaurants and bars

Modern hotel in historic building but falls short of a "5" for two reasons: 1. Breakfast options were limited and the breakfast room was too small for the number of guests in the hotel. Also, why was the cleaning cart in the breakfast room while everyone was eating breakfast? 2. Checkout time was early: 10:00 am. When we asked for a few minutes more while I picked up a rental car, the answer was an emphatic "No." Despite those two correctable problems, this hotel doesn't have to do much more to become a top place to stay in Christchurch.

What a beautiful building oozing with history. Great room, clean with a great bathroom. Short walk to restaurants and the Botanical Gardens. Beautiful lounge area, quick check in/check out and the usual friendly service typifies the NZ way.

Totally cool hotel- great location- in the Arts Center and across the street from the botanical gardens. We had a lovely room and could walk most everywhere we wanted to go. Looks like it is an old hotel, but it is very up to date and accommodating.
