The Wyndham Garden Christchurch City elicits a wide range of reactions; numerous guests commend its prime location near the CBD and local attractions, although a few feel it's a bit peripheral. While some visitors appreciate the spacious, modern rooms with convenient laundry facilities, others point out areas where the decor feels dated and cleanliness could be improved.
The staff's service receives a mix of accolades for friendliness and criticism for inconsistency. Opinions on value are split, with mentions of reasonable rates but concerns over extra charges and basic amenities.

Love staying at new, modern style hotels, who doesn’t, and the best bit was that I had my own washer and dryer in the bathroom, booked specially by hubby so as I could “knock myself out” with washing and ironing our clothes, half way through a 7 week touring holiday of New Zealand. The room was large with a “proper” king size bed although have to say that it was a bit on the firm side, a thick topper pad would have been nice. Sheets were crisp and pillows not bad. Lovely room but I have marked it down one star because of the following (a lot of which other people have complained about). The thinnest, cheapest loo paper I have encountered “anywhere”, like 1 ply and the same with the box of tissues. Really not much storage but very thankful of the huge wardrobe with a wonderful amount of hangers and the drawer under the sink in the bathroom. Powerful shower but the door did not seal properly and the water did keep running hot and cold. Great to have a washer and dryer but no where to hang or air the clothes afterwards, could have done with a washing line or something, was however very thankful of all the great, decent quality, wood hangers in the wardrobe and the extra wardrobe space in there. Only given 2 large towels and one small in the bathroom, fortunately there is a heated towel rail so you can dry your towels and re use them and be environmentally friendly. Stayed 3 nights but opted not to have housekeeping, just caught the lady on the first morning and stocked up with the things we needed. The hotel is advertised as having parking space but as far as I could see there is only about 6 parking spaces for hotel guests, the rest of the parking is reserved for the people who own appartments here so you are very unlikely to get a parking space here. On a very quiet Sunday we were told to park our car in one of 6 parking spaces on a bit of waste gravel outside, in the hotel car park. There is however a car park adjacent to the hotel that seams to charge parking at about $15 for 24 hours so maybe that’s the best bet. The kitchen area was good with microwave, hob, toaster, fridge, dishwasher, pottery etc so you could eat breakfast in or make a light meal, we did not try the cafe in the hotel. They also did supply dishwasher and washer powder sachets which was very good although I did bring my own washing pods from home. There was a really good Thai restaurant around the corner called Kum Pun if you don’t want to walk too far however only a 10 minute walk to most places so great position and felt very safe to walk in the evening.

Located within City Centre, easy access to public transport as well as shop and restaurants down the road. Certain rooms also have a washing machine and dryer which is handy for when your travelling.
Only issue we found was that the Cafe in the restaurant had alcohol you could buy but only when a supervisor was around which wasn't the case the few times we went down there for a drink. Also the rooms are sound proofed for outside noise (e.g. the street) but not internally. You can hear doors opening and closing during the night or if people are talking in the hallway.

The Wyndham City Garden Hotel had exactly what we needed as two people on an extended road trip. The newly built, modern, clean hotel rooms included a kitchenette (with everything except an oven) and the coveted washer/drier. The value for the price is outstanding. The only draw back we noticed is that there is (albeit free) parking, there are not enough spaces for the number of hotel rooms. This results in a slight first come first serve tension some may not want to deal with. We always found a space and knew it necessary we could park on the street. A shoutout to Annabelle at the front desk who was most gracious as we checked in.

The check-in went well and both staff were friendly and professional. The lift was tidy and clean. And then I got to the room - the hole in the wall had been plastered but not sanded or painted, there were stains on the carpet, the bathroom smelt as if the shower drain had not been cleared or cleaned since it was instilled and there were no hand towels or teaspoons. When I went for breakfast the next morning the buffet looked it had been there since the tour party had dined two hours previously and the staff seemed unimpressed when I asked if I could order a coffee. So I left to check out which descended into a Fawlty Towers farce with the receptionist unwilling to take my payment for parking and then she seemed to be unable to print a receipt when she finally took the payment. !0 minutes at least wasted. Avoid this hotel.

Stayed four four nights car parking extra. Servicing of our room was almost non existent to the point we had to change our own towels put our rubbish out and made our own bed, not really a big deal. But when we checked out we agreed with the front desk that they would waive the parking charge in lieu of the lack of room service. You can imagine how we felt when we were retrospectively charged for parking ! We were promised a call back when we queried this and have heard nothing. Just not what we expected from a four star hotel

I stayed here for 4 nights. This hotel is in a good location within walking distance of the central city, art gallery, art centre. Staff very professional check in easy. The room is large, the bed is comfy, shower pressure very good, Wi-Fi was good. I was happy to have a small kitchenette and a washer/dryer. plunger coffee was appreciated although it was not replenished after day 1. It was great to have a heated towel rail. There are, however, several things that really tempered my enthusiasm for this hotel. The towels are minuscule. Toilet paper and tissues lowest quality. No drawers to put your stuff in. Cleaning consists of making the bed, replacing towels and emptying rubbish. No cleaning sinks or shower or counter tops. No vacuuming. My room looked out onto a construction site and there was noise. I got a good deal through booking.Com but still not sure that I would stay again.

The hotel is clean and seems to be pretty new. That’s the good. The not so good. Reception was not very friendly, and sometimes non existent. I had to wait 8 minutes (I timed it) for someone to show up. The location is convenient, but only if you like to walk. It’s a 15 minute walk to center of town and most sights. The room is very poorly designed. Despite being in a slightly ‘larger’ room, there isn’t anywhere to put anything if you are traveling with more than a small bag. There is only a closet and luggage rack, no flat surfaces. We were two people traveling around New Zealand and we found that by the time we brought luggage into the room it was quite cramped. In our room the advertised washer and separate dryer was really a combo unit. These setups add a lot of time to laundry because they are notoriously slow. Despite being brand new, the towels were torn and ratty. There’s not too many convenient restaurants (again a 15 minute walk). But there is a great Indian restaurant right around the corner.

Parking availability on the website is misleading. We're told on arrival that it is prebook and it was full. Option was onstreet or mounting a curb to park on waste ground. Response.to concern was that the rules had changed and "I don't know what to tell you". The location is good so you can walk to most places in the city but if you want to go further you risk not having a space after about 4pm. My suggestion is that if you have a low or expensive car make sure you have secured a parking space. Otherwise this place is likely not for you.
We also had to abandon waiting for cabinet food I waited 20 minutes for 2 coffees at breakfast and gave up waiting for the Danish and muffin I had paid for after a further wait.
I have given feedback to Wyndham on this but haven't had any response.

Stayed here as it was a central location. Won’t be coming back. 1) Had to check in late (after 9 pm) as our flight was delayed. Tried to have a shower but discovered the shower gel and shampoo bottles were empty! Tried to call reception to ask for more but the phone had been unplugged, couldn’t plug it back. Had to go down to reception to get replacement bottles myself! It was also a health and safety matter not having the phone in my room in case of emergencies. Lady at the reception didn’t think much of it and merely said they will look into it the next day. Didn’t feel my concerns were taken seriously.
2) I requested for a change of room to a higher floor which was much better and Quieter the next day.
3) Housekeeping was still a hit and miss with some days better than others
4) first morning I was there, there was a buffet breakfast we could help ourselves to as part of our room package. But the next day, we were told we could only order 1 item from the menu. No reason given for the discrepancy.
5) the phone in the room emits very bright light at night that it is hard to sleep, maybe that’s why the previous occupants in the previous night’s room had unplugged it?
Overall service was so-so. The photos on the website look good but reality is every thing is so much smaller and not as upmarket as shown. Won’t be coming back.

We stayed at the Wyndham Garden in January 2022 for 6 nights. Being able to walk to the centre of town and not having to worry about car parking was really handy. The rooms had everything we required including a washer and dryer and were clean, quiet and very comfortable. The staff were all friendly and went out of their way to ensure everything was just right. In particular Marley, Ainslie and Dan who made us feel at home by remembering our coffee order, just having a chat and calling out a hello as we walked in each time they were around. The breakfast menu was superbly cooked with enough variety to eat there every day. We look forward to returning.
