Detailed Reviews
We first stayed with Nicola and Poul at their Mt Pleasant B&B in 2008 for a couple of nights after landing at Christchurch airport. Mt Pleasant B&B is easy to find from the airport and is out of the city. This is no ordinary B&B. It is a self contained apartment with lounge/diner with TV, fully equiped kitchen, bedroom with TV and large bathroom with bath and shower. Many a relaxing drink was taken on the veranda overlooking the interesting garden layout Poul has created. I guarantee you will not be made more welcome anywhere else in New Zealand. We liked Mt Pleasant so much that we managed to get booked in for another night on our return journey to the area before going on to the North Island. This holiday in 2008 was for 4 weeks duration, 2 weeks touring the South Island and 2 weeks touring the North Island, but it still wasn't enough for us and we vowed to go back.
Hence, in February 2010 we went back for a 7 week holiday this time. Needless to say our first port of call was Nicola and Poul's B&B for our first 3 nights. When we booked we said it would be like going home and sure enough when we arrived there was a sign saying 'Welcome Home, Barry & Linda'.
The advantages of staying at Mt Pleasant are numerous e.g. the nightly rate charged, the accomodation, the variety and quality of the food supplied for your breakfast. For those on a self catering holiday there is a Woolworth food supermarket not too far away as well. As I said Mt Pleasant is out of the city, but you can catch the bus in and the bus stop is only a short walk from Nicola & Poul's. Poul is a keen cyclist and has a fountain of information and knowledge about the surrounding areas and beauty spots. He also told us of places to stop and look at during our touring, which were not just those around his area. Poul, if asked, will also make all the birds sing in the garden for you, he has a certain gift for this.
As well as Mt Pleasant B&B, I would also recomend Apex Car Rentals. They picked us up at Christchurch airport and took us to their depot. On completion of both our holidays we dropped the car off in Auckland before being taken to the airport again.

We stayed at the Mt. Pleasant B&B on our first two nights in Christchurch from the U.S. We were very jet lagged, but this B&B was perfect. They have a completely separate unit with its own bedroom, bathroom, lounge and fully-stocked kitchen! It was the perfect place to regenerate before exploring NZ! Nicola and Poul are perfect hosts!

By the time we hit Christchurch, we were on our "al-fresco" part of the holiday and booking accomodation based on entries in the NZ B&B (Black) Book rather than following the reviews and ratings of my Trip Advisor friends so a bit out on a limb!
Paul and Nicola were excellent hosts making our two nights in Christchruch not only comfortable, but very interesting recounting (when asked) the experiences of the several Christchurch quakes since Feb 2011.
This homestay provided exceptional value for money when you look at the space the accomodation gave us, the double bedroom would have been enough but added to that was a massive bathroom (along with roll top bath and separate shower) fully kitted out kitchen AND sitting room and balcony (which Mrs Chris R200 found very useful as a smoker).
The views were very good, but hanging off a hill as the property is may be a little disconcerting although we experienced a tremor during our stay and the house remains!
In 26 nights in B&B / Homestay NZ, it was the first where we were provided the ingredients of breakfast to do with what we wished, when we wished and actually, it worked for us!
A personal prefference would have been less clutter - the accomodation seemed full of quirky dust collecting nic-naks, but that is my opinion only and shouldn't be seen as a negative. To be honest, if we were to return to ChCh I'd have no hesitation in booking again and knowing I'd enjoy the stay.
Hang on in there ChCh, tourists will return!

Dear Poul and Nicola,
we are back to work in Germany. We had a wonderful time in New Zealand and enjoyed our time in your homestay very much. You are so friendly. Thanks a lot for all the help you did for us. We'll never forget it. Poul, you showed us your nice house and the very interesting garden. It's amazing. You are always busy at home and create a paradise. Best wishes to you Poul and Nicola. You will here from us soon.

We spent a couple of nights at Mt. Pleasant B&B in February 2010 as we began our visit to the South Island. Its location is picturesque, on the mountainside, amidst Poul’s lovingly-tended gardens. Our accommodations were essentially a private apartment, decorated with eclectic items, with a lovely view from the balcony. Having our own kitchen area stocked with a large variety of breakfast food options provided flexibility in the content and the timing of the meal, as well as the option of self-catering other meals. Poul and Nicola were very helpful with their knowledge of the area and personal recommendations regarding the areas of interest to tourists. We appreciated being within walking distance of the bus line, especially with the shortcut that Poul pointed out to us. When we returned to Mt. Pleasant on the last night of our too brief tour of New Zealand, we were welcomed warmly, as old friends. We hope to return again.
Before you arrive, make certain that you get good directions to find the B&B. The GPS in our rental car was not able to direct us there, as it is an unusual location on a small lane off of the main streets in a neighborhood on the mountainside.

We had 5 nights in Poul & Nicola's wonderful B&B. They are very welcoming hosts and own an excellently appointed home. Breakfast is supplied on a DIY basis and more than enough is available - we were very happy with this service.
The B&B is more like a holiday flat, comfortable, spacious, with a veranda overlooking the Heathcote River valley and Poul's wonderful hillside garden.
The suburban location is good for reaching Christchurch centre (30 minutes by car) and also the attractions of SE Christchurch - Port Hills, Godley Head, Sumner, etc.
Nicola & Poul give good advice about the local area - walks on Godley Head and on where to eat (Watershed pub 20 minutes away in Ferrymead).

I really love this place. The amazing garden, the sounds of the birds, the silence, the great view and of course the delicious bacon. Nicola and Poul are perfect hosts doing everything to make your stay perfect. Thanks.

I stayed at Paul and Nicola's house in mid-Feb for four nights at the start of a 6 week holiday travelling alone in New Zealand and it was the best start I could have wished for... They both were so helpful, kind, and generous, arranging trips and showing me around Christchurch... Their house and gardens are spectacular and had everything I needed and more - its like having your own apartment (with the added luxury of a very big lovely old victorian roll top bath! They know how to be helpful but not intrusive and are both friendly, interesting people. Sitting on the balcony watching the light and weather change was just heavenly.... It's a wonderfully warm and inviting place to stay, full of interesting artefacts - including Paul's amazing sculptures in the gardens! I can't believe it isn't higher up the ratings for b& b's in Christchurch - it deserves to be up in the top five!! I would definitely have no reservations in staying there again - and hope to do so again when I return to NZ. Thank you Paul and Nicola for such a great introduction to your beautiful country! Heather in Cornwall :)

We stayed here twice when we were in NZ in Feb/March 2008, we'd booked from UK for 1st stay but we were so taken with the friendly reception we received that we came back after our tour round the South Island. Nicola and Poul were very friendly but not 'in your face' over friendly if you know what I mean. We had total freedom to come and go as we wanted but a lot of our time was spent not going but sitting on 'our' balcony enjoying the view over the garden, and across Christchurch Town and plain to the mountains in the distance.
Bed and breakfast in NZ usually means you get breakfast and somewhere to cook but here we got our own kitchen as well as our own bedroom, bathroom living room and the balcony I've already talked about. We did have to make our own breakfast but that suited us just fine because Nicola and Poul had provided everything we could possibly need (and more!!).
So often we don't know what to write in B&B guest books but to let anyone who's looking for a great place to stay in Christchurch know what we thought of Mount Pleasant B&B here what we wrote ----
"Pam and Richard's Appreciation alphabet - botanically breathtaking, cosy comfort, delightful deck, entirely entrancing, fantastically friendly, genuinely generous, home hospitality, individual independence, just a joy, kinda kool, laidback luxury, most memorable, nice, Nicola! outstanding (obviously), Perfect, Poul! quintessential quality, remarkably relaxing, sweet as (we are in NZ), totally terrific, utterly unbeatable, voluptuous vistas, warmhearted welcome..."
