Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great service. Very friendly staff and the pizza came out pretty quickly. I ordered the Akaroa salmon and overall it wasn’t bad; the salmon was quite salty but it was fresh, tasty and a good size for the $20 that it cost us. We would probably go back and try one of the other flavours

Not a bad place to visit and stay, however, the room was close to the bar area and there was a party going on but the noise stopped close to midnight.

Unfortunately, the restaurant on the premises did not cater for late arrivals - not even ant 21:00 on a Saturday night!!

A large group of us (17) stayed here in the first week of March and this accommodation easily met our needs. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The rooms are basic and dated but you get what you pay for.

I understand that the hotel in under new ownership and there were alterations being done in the reception while we were there. also, there was a note in the rooms requesting feedback regarding the accommodation which indicated improvements are in the wind.

We frequented the bar at the back of the complex where the staff were friendly and the bar tidy.

There was a wholesaler next door and also a couple of other convenience stores (petrol station, dairy, bakery, Pizza etc) across the road. Also, there are a couple shopping Malls approx. 2.5Km in either direction.

We would be happy to stay here again.

Thank you so much for your comments. We were encouraged by them. Since this time, the rooms have been refurbished and as well as offering a buffet lunch and dinner in the restaurant, we are now offering a buffet breakfast as well. Thanks for coming to The redwood.

Come to CHCH for 3 days to go to a wedding located out at ohoka park, only about 10 mins to that side of town and the same to the city, maybe even a bit less. There was a group of 6 of us split over 4 rooms. We where pleasantly surprised with our stay here at the Redwoods. This is a place that is very old and a little run down and despite being near a main road is very quiet. Rooms are spacious and clean. A little dated but not bad at all. Beds and pillows really comfortable. Crisp clean fresh sheets & your room is serviced every day with fresh towels and bed made which was a pleasant surprise. Free milk, Bag of chippies and bikkies on arrival too. We had the rooms along the grass field and it was nice to socialize on the grass area. Walking distance to the servo and bottle shop and there's a Restaurant / sports bar attached with a good menu (and salad bar too, winning!) We had Pizzas for dnner and they where bloody yum - plus we had the pesto pasta from the salad bar which was fresh and yum. Would definitely stay here again, Yes its old, but the price and convenience of the place was well worth it. PS Bar Staff where lovely as well, and I forgot to mention we got too free drink vouchers with our accommodation too! This was massive surprise, considering you can have spirts. That's so good. Cheers to the staff - your all amazing.

Really impressed. Lady at reception was so so helpful and finally a hotel that provided real milk upon check in.
Old fashioned some quaint anomalies I havent seen for yonks.
Roomy, neat and tidy.
I toddled up to reception in heavy rain to order continental breakfast and the same helpful lady was so helpful, gave me a few tips and showed me how to get back to room undercover.
Complimentary drink at bar, free guest laundry so friendly staff in restaurant as well, good food.
Very rarely give 5 stars but Redwood deserves them!
Am looking at riding around south island next summer and if I do, will definitely stay at Redwood again.

The Unit and services were not as advertised. Unit was dirty and noisy. The service was poor and feedback was met with rude denials. Would rather sleep in car than pay good money to this outfit again. This is the absolute truth!

I arrived in Christchurch to discover that the entire city was booked up thanks to the ICC Cricket World Cup. Literally every single tiny motel in the vicinity of the city was booked. It took me 2-1/2 hours and finally another hotel looked up availability and sent me out to the Redwood. (I needed to be close to Christchurch, so going further afield wasn't a choice).

The hotel is quite a way out of town, so not practical unless you have a car as the only thing nearby is a bottle shop. The hotel is stuck in the 70's, and frankly if they just embraced that, it could be a fairly fantastic vintage hotel. But the beds are mediocre, the rooms are cold and clammy, and the furniture arrangement slightly peculiar. The bathroom smells a little mildewy, the floor tiles are cracked, the bathroom light is reluctant in lighting, and the shower head is about chin height on me. (I'm tall, but not THAT tall!) I also have some basic safety concerns- all the rooms are ground level and the glass sliding door has only the simple doorknob lock; there is no peep hole on the door; The only lock on the door is the door knob lock. I don't leave anything remotely valuable in the room when I'm not here, and truthfully, I've probably been lulled into a false sense of security by New Zealand which gives the appearance of being completely safe and having no crime whatsoever. In most places in the world, I wouldn't stay in a room without a deadbolt and a chain lock.

On the upside, the desk staff has been friendly each time I've had to chat with them, the room rate is the cheapest I've seen in New Zealand, the room is actually rather large, and the internet is good quality and free, which is not ubiquitous in New Zealand. I haven't tried any of the bars or restaurants, though this evening they seem to be reasonably popular. There's also a laundry here and a kitchen available for guests, but I haven't checked out either of these amenities.

This is normally not somewhere I would stay, but given the circumstances, I could have done a lot worse.

We just took over the ownership and management of The Redwood in February 2015. The Redwood is now under completely new management. We are providing a friendly service. We have done up all the rooms - all repainted, with new beds and joinery. Thank you for posting your comments. We really appreciate this. We think the rooms are very good value too.

Great older style accommodation, spotlessly clean. Quiet. Light, airy room with a double bed, TV and a chair. Kettle to make a cuppa. No toaster. Wall heater and electric blanket. Part of a conference centre and pub. Good parking. Friendly staff. Away from the city centre and recommend having a car if staying here. If you are looking for cheap digs without the frills, this is a great place to stay.

Stayed here for one night. Staff were friendly and the room was pretty standard for a motel. I would recommend maybe getting some ventilation or a fan in the bathroom. Lots of parking when we were there. Would say that you need a car to get to the main CBD area of Christchurch.
