Kay very kindly let us check in early, much appreciated. Separate bedroom and living area, ideal for jet lag when wide awake at 2 am! Shopping centre nearby. Bed very comfy. Outside seating, quiet, although on busy road.
My friend and I had a wonderful stay here.

This is a dated motel but it was clean, the bed was very comfortable and the reception friendly and it was cheap. It was a good location for our trip, being near the university. I would imagine the rooms nearer the busy road are noisy but ours was at the far end and was fine. I have stayed here several times now and it has always been clean BUT they are dated rooms and the price fairly reflects this I think.

We stayed one night after arriving in NZ from OZ. Booked online with Wotif - agreed price on booking confirmation was NZ$120 but we were charged NZ$140 when we checked in. Reception staff member did not have English as their first language, was difficult to understand and was preoccupied with using the computer (and apologising profusely) while we were attempting to contact a family member in NZ by phone. The phone system was abysmal - neither our phone nor the reception phone worked reliably (we continually got a message to try again later) and we ended up having to walk some distance down the road to the shopping centre to use the public phone. On the plus side, the room was basic but clean, and the separate bedroom was appreciated, and there is a dairy across the road. Wifi is free but continually dropped out

Christchurch was very busy with so many events happening over the weekend so this was the only motel with a vacancy. I now can see why. On booking the motel I spoke to an Asian gentleman who couldn't understand me. Very dificult to communicate. I had to contact the motel to confirm my booking the night before arrival as I had not received any confirmation earlier. Once again I could not be understood. The Asian lady said she was emailing the confirmation but that never arrived. She had written down the wrong email address!
On arrival I was greeted by the same young lady who just handed me some milk and told me where the unit was. I have no idea of her name, never introduced herself but she knew my name. She didn't walk me to our unit. I was disgusted with the presentation of our unit and I was ready to run if only there was somewhere else to go. Partly painted walls and skirtings, it is so dated, the carpet was thread bare, it looked like second hand furniture throughout. Stained bath, no soap in the dispensers, the towels are old and faded. No hair drier. In the kitchen there is this hole in the bench top where you are supposed to throw rubbish down. It is accessed from outside. Yuck! None of the cutlery matched, 3 coffee mugs for 4 beds. Pathetic glasses that only a child would use. The tea towel is the size of a dishcloth. Couldn't work the sky TV and there were no instructions. The window catches were not secure.Single beds. Wouldn't take much to put in two kingbeds that joined when required. No mirror in the bedroom. The net curtains were dreadful. Felt trapped. The walls are paper thin and we could hear people speaking and a crying child in the next unit. I have to say they were clean. I think the units should have a major upgrade or be bulldozed down. It is such a great site and very handy to the Riccarton Mall. I spoke to the gentleman and said of my disappointment and he was going to speak to his boss... $320 for 3 adults for two nights. another motel which we Over priced for what we got. I would not recommend this accomodation.

I originally booked this place at Brisbane airport, a rushed trip, flying into chch 5 hours later with the 24 hr check in and location to the Chinese embassy being my reasoning. What I have recieved has been what I think is fate as the new owner Carol completely treated me like a family member from the moment I arrived at 2 am in the morning! If your looking for a sterile Chain environment that lacks any kind of multi cultural nz that I for one am proud to be then maybe keep scrolling. Being a kiwi living in Australia I have come to love and appreciate our quirky ‘dated’ housing that is still our predominant way of living. Not a motel chain, just a beautiful family running a small business in an area that will delight any traveller and ensure your comfort by any means. Although a solo traveller the cheap room I booked was a 2 bedroom motel with everything I needed to live here if I wanted (and would!) Situated on Riccarton road, a busy main chch road but also meant I was a 10 min walk to Riccarton mall yet not so close to the crazy traffic that I experienced on my walk today as I got close to the mall area. I wouldn’t like to stay anywhere closer with a car for transportation. Had I wanted there was a bus stop out the front which took me there but why would I? Literally across the road is 4 different eateries to choose from with many more surrounding. This area embraces many cultures and needs and the motel especially emphasises this. Carol checked me in at 2 am, and was lovely enough to then drive me to the Chinese embassy the next morning, extend my stay and look after my luggage as I decided my next plan at moments notice. I cannot rave enough about this woman. You are paying for this awesome service more than the room which can be priceless for many travellers. Carols goal is not about bottom dollar room rates, rather a memorable experience and a lasting relationship for whenever you ever may need her again. The motel is u shaped which means you get to know those also staying. Tonight I was greeted by beautiful children with a traditional Egyptian dessert to try. An experience I will treasure. Some stay here long term others not. This is the treasure of this motel. The room itself has a modern aircon/heat pump, oven, fridge, sky tv (pay tv or Foxtel as some would call it) kitchen with utensils, 2 couches, dining table, bathroom and 2 rooms. There is also Car parking directly in front of room. Carol will provide whatever you need if you just ask, but understand this is a small business working so hard to rejuvenate an old motel complex and previous owners reputations. As a New Zealander I can say this motel is completely normal and a signature of our history. You won’t go cold, you won’t be without, it just isn’t built 10 years ago! As you can tell from this review there is too much to rave about this place but I imagine solo and family travellers or locals needing an unbiased welcoming space will not be disappointed. Love this gem I found.

Perfect place to stay . We had a couple nights here either side of our NZ adventure . Staff are fantastic and helpful . Rear units were not noisy , so quiet .The motel is within easy walking distance to restaurants and supermarket as well as is a short bus trip to the CBD . Our flight didn't leave until 7pm , we were able to leave our luggage at the motel so we could explore Christchurch .

Earlier this month we stayed for a number of nights at the Ilam Motel. We had been there in earlier visits to Christchurch and had been satisfied with the accommodation. However, the ownership must have changed. This latest stay was filled with problems. The receptionist could hardly understand/speak English. In addition, they were not proactive to problems but just reacted to each issue we faced - a very poor way to run a motel! Some of the problems were a serious leak from a pipe under the kitchen sink, which eventually caused us to have to move to another unit in the middle of our stay. Both the phone and internet access had repeated problems. The liquid soap containers kept running out of soap or wouldn't properly dispense the soap. Also there is heavy traffic on Riccarton Road with vehicles accelerating when the traffic signal (right in front of the motel) turns green. I would not recommend staying at this place - it has definitely run down over the years.

Another Oh Dear! - Friendly helpful owners, handy location and reasonably clean. BUT so very shabby, tatty and care-worn. Net curtains throughout all units in various stages of tidy or tatty, furniture looked old and 'Op-Shoppy' and nothing matched, no headboard on double bed, kitchen taps leaked, kettle leaked, loo on a lean, navy towels so washed they were faded, awful half sized tea towels, rubbish disposal system of a hole in the end of the bench (with a broken cover = very drafty) that led to a newspaper lined bin which was emptied through a trapdoor outside, dish cloth was a Chux cloth washed so often there was little colour left. Come on - how much do Chux cloths cost? For the overall cost one would think they should be able to provide better chattels?

I have to stay in Christchurch regularly and usually on Riccarton Rd which has some excellent Motels. Arriving this week the only Motel not fully booked was Ilam and I soon realised why. Cold, smelly, noisy, old fashioned, sign over bath saying please do not use, two hand towells no bath towells, worn out furniture, poor decor, traffic noise. Best way to improve this property would be to demolish it !

Very pleasant and all I wanted and needed on this occasion, after a very friendly welcome. There are good restaurants close by and the room I had was sunny and light with a good bed and nice appointments. Booking online was easy.
