Comfortable, older style motel unit, but at short notice was very acceptable and much appreciated. Owners are lovely, very accommodating and even brought fresh garden flowers into our unit when servicing which was a lovely touch.
Tip to fellow travellers, book direct when making reservations (not through booking.com), as the booking.com commission is put on top of the reservation price. :)

We have been staying at this hotel for 30+ years - this time it was for a family birthday. It is reasonably priced, close to shops, close to Westfield Mall in Riccarton and not far from Hagley Park and the city centre. The owners are great, the units well serviced and the rooms are quiet so sleeping not an issue. The heat pump on cool was great with the hot weather Christchurch has been having. We will definitely keep returning. They now have a loyalty card for booking directly online.

The Coachman is a clean comfortable motel - that leaves many higher rated hotels/motels behind for facilities and service. Very friendly, helpful owners make sure that your stay is as enjoyable and hassle free as it can be. We have stayed there several times - and one (small) criticism would be the Saturday night parties in one or 2 nearby houses are noisy and late into the night. The local council can and should sort this

We were happy with the room, it was cleand and tidy. We unfortunately left a charger cord in the room we stayed in and didn't realise this until we arrived home. We live 6 hours away from christchurch so we can't just pop back to get it. We called the motel straight away and asked them if they had found our charger which they said that they had. I asked them if they could courier it to us and would pay the shipping costs for them to do so, which they agreed to. It had been 5 days since I had contacted them with no sign of our charger cord and no charges have come off our credit card so they obviously havn't sent it. I e-mailed them instead of calling as there was a bit of a language barrier over the phone the last time I called,so thought it may make the communication easier to understand. It has now been a week with no reply from them. I can't think of a reason why they would want to keep a charger cord that is no good to them. We are very disappointed that they havn't kept to their word. I would urge others to be careful to never leave anything behind.

Response from Karen Keith, Owner at Coachman Motel
Responded 14 Nov 2021
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that the Coachman has had a change of ownership. We would be happy to make right your stay with the Coachman. Proud Kiwi owners now would be sure to return your goods. There are several chargers and cords in the back office we would be happy to send you one if it is your brand. Karen & Aaron

We stayed overnight in Christchurch in March of 2020 and enjoyed our stay at The Coachman Motel. The motel picked us up from the airport and returned us the next day for our car rental for a nominal fee. Check in was fast and easy and we were upgraded to a larger room. The room was immaculate, comfortable, and roomy. In addition, we had a refrigerator, stove top, and microwave if we had wanted to cook. The bathroom was clean, modern, and roomy. We would use The Coachman Motel if we were to return to Christchurch again.

Clean and comfortable - I very much appreciated the older style, large units - and the owners were very nice people. Stayed in large studio and then a two bedroom unit when my family joined me. Nice decor, good room servicing. Chose the place as near to Canterbury Uni & the rates were reasonable. Convenient to supermarkets and food outlets.

I stayed here for one night, arriving in the afternoon and leaving on a flight the next morning. The place is quite a distance from central Christchurch, though there are buses. There is no need to go there unless you wish as a number of restaurants, as well as a shopping centre with really everything you could need is only a short walk away. I asked for the smallest room just to accommodate myself but got a two bedroom apartment for the price of a studio. Predictably it was spacious, had a kitchen, bathtub and a small outside area to the back. Furniture and decoration were a bit old, and a motel of that category might think of modernising such rooms. WiFi was available. The signal was a bit patchy and I was told before that this might be an issue in the particular room where I stayed, but worked perfectly just outside. Otherwise, it is a very good value for money place, with friendly management.

We were staying in Christchurch overnight after travelling up from Oamaru before flying back home. We stayed in a studio unit. It has a queen bed and a single bed, a lounge area, kitchen area with table and a bathroom with shower. The unit has been modernised since we started staying her 20 years ago.

We were very unimpressed with our small room. It was advertised as a double, but we were surprised at how small it was. There was very little room between the bed at the walls and nowhere for us to put our luggage. We understand that rooms are at a premium in Christchurch, but compared to another room we'd had in Christchurch earlier in our trip this one was very disappointing. We won't be staying there again.
