I highly recommend this hotel, as it is operated by its owners and they are the most friendly and hospitable hosts, specially Amanda. The place is immaculate. Each suite is spacious and has a view to a beautiful garden. The kitchen is very well equipped and the bathroom is also very comfortable. They also have a free shuttle to the airport or railroad.

Such a wonderful place to stay. Amanda and Gary are very accommodating and welcoming hosts who are helpful with information and suggestions for places to visit and routes to take.
The rooms are modern, clean and very welcoming with lots of little extra touches.
The units overlook the beautiful garden with outdoor settings for guests to enjoy. Overall, a very warm and wonderful ambience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay and would definitely stay again.
Thanks
Kim and Gilbert

The room was very comfortable with nice amenities. I enjoyed the leather reading chair, especially. The bed was comfy, and everything was clean and in good condition. There is a very nice coffee shop just up the street got a nice cup of coffee and or hearty breakfast.

We stayed here just for one night in November. Their fancy website promises, amongst other, free broadband wifi, which we needed for all kind of things (bookings for our journey etc). After arrival it turned out to be only 50mb (which is nothing these days), and you pay extra for more needed. This was truly in contradiction with their marketing. So in our eyes dishonest people only going for the money you can bring them.

Further, the rooms are old and run down. We have stayed in manu other motels in Christchurch which were very new and less expensive.

Dont go here unless you have no alternative.

We stayed here for four weeks in one of their two bedroom units. It had a full kitchen (even a fridge/freezer and dishwasher) and a large bathroom with a separate toilet and separate shower. It had great undercover parking. Would recommend especially if you need a place to stay while EQC repairs are being done on your home.

This motel seems like a family-managed hotel, with very clean and tidy rooms they serve. The motel is not too far from the airport, and is resided at the Riccarton housing areas. Not too far from the motel, there is easy accessibility to the supermarkets, restaurants and the famous Riccarton sunday market. If you're opting to spend one or two days in Christchurch, this can be a good choice to stay over.

The good - spacious and great wireless internet connection that didn't drop out. Plenty of towels that were clean and fresh milk offered, parking no problem and a good iron and board that made short work of creases. It has a tired exterior, but the interior is clean and they obviously work hard at keeping it just so.
The average (won't say 'the bad') - the sign on the wall saying NZ suffered 'power cuts and water shortages' and to 'save water and hang towels up. (is anyone else getting bored with this 'saving water thing when its just about saving the operator costs of laundry?) the message is fine, but perhaps condition that a bit with some earthquake context as foreign visitors will think they've arrived in Port Vila or Kabul. The other 'average' is that its great having a 42 inch TV on the wall, except that the person watching it is more than likely further away from the TV than the person trying to sleep next door!
The ugly - couple of uglies, and the first is (and maybe its beyond their control) but the shower pressure is so weak that you're better off arming yourself with a cup, filling it and pouring it over your head. Beware the icy cold spray in the face as all of a sudden the pressure comes on when you turn the flow back towards off - you have been warned.
Heating! there is only the oil filled (that dry you out like a prune) and fan heaters (that leave you gasping) rather than modern heatpumps which might be a good investment for the future.

Thank you for your review. I am glad you found some things to your liking. I am sorry that you have a problem with the sign regarding water conservation, It is a part of our Qualmark rating that we invite guests to participate in conserving water and energy by choosing how often to have their towels changed. When I am away I do choose to reuse my towel and get annoyed if my choice is ignored. So many hotels ask you to choose and then ignore your choice! Regarding your comments re heatin. the old adage "you can't please all the people all of the time" is true. I have guests who ask for a fan heater instead of the oil column, and others who ask for an oil column. Heat pumps are exceedingly costly to install and personally I don't like the draught that they seem to continually create. We have now put high quality convection heaters in the renovated units which are meant to maintain temperature to within point 1 of a degree of desired setting. Guests are finding their rooms warm and cosy.

This would have to be the best stay we have had. Gary and Amanda were excellent hosts. Stayed for a hot rod event and had garage parking for all the rods, Hot Cross buns on arrival and had a lovely clean and tidy 2 bedroom unit that over looked the beautiful garden, with fresh flowers in our rooms. Easter Bunny left eggs outside our unit on Easter and Amanda dropped everything to deliver all the rodders staying there to the venue. A couple of the guys had to wait and she appeared with freshly cooked pikelets while they waited. They both went over and above and it was greatly appreciated by us all. Definitely stay again and highly recommend to anyone visiting Christchurch. Great locality too, handy to most things. Thanks So much Gary and Amanda xx

This place just keeps getting better!

The most friendly welcome and chat from Amanda and Gary. Spotless, cosy and beautifully appointed room. A 'brown fuzzy one' on arrival.

And when unexpected roadworks prevented access back to the motel, Amanda took it upon herself to bravely trek down Yaldhurst Rd with a flag, move the witches hats and negotiate access with the road crew. Service will never get better than that!

Thanks again, the high bar for friendly, genuine kiwi service and hospitality set years ago by Alan and Sally has well and truly been exceeded.

I was so impressed with the Avonhead Garden Motel that I’m still smiling a month on! The hosts were so lovely and incredibly accommodating of our big group, the garden area was beautiful and perfect to have a BBQ (excellent large BBQ on site free to use), and the rooms were very clean and fresh feeling - it seems they have had a recent interior refresh.

The motel is within walking distance of a supermarket, a couple of cafes and takeaways. And if you go you have to ask the owners recommendation for local Fish & Chips because they were out of this world!
