Detailed Reviews
This is not a hotel. It is a big house that has turned into a backpackers.
For backpackers however, it wasnt bad at all.
We got a private room, and it honestly felt like a sleepover at a friends house.
The bed was very comfortable and nicely made, we had a wardrobe, lamps and a bed side table.
The bathroom is a "shower shoes must" if you catch my drift, and water pressure low, but it had hot water.
There was a kitchen and shared facilities, but we were there only one night so didnt use any of their facilities.
The house itself is very big and contains 15 rooms, some shared rooms with bunk beds and some private doubles like ours.
The lady at the "reception" was lovely and tried her best to help out as much as she could.
Wifi is NOT free, you have to pay for a card and there are different options, but $2 gets you a whole days worth of internet. So cant complain.
This place is VERY FAR from the city centre, you will definitely have to get a taxi, or get your rental car company to come pick you up which is what we did.
Overall nice and very cheap ($50 per night) for a one night stay.

Tranquil Lodge had a pretty bad rating in other website, but i thought how bad could it be just for one night...?
Well i was so wrong..! From the moment we entered the Lodge we knew we are stepping into something bad. As soon as you enter you notice the lodge is dirty. The hall way is bad. Kitchen of all is so dirty. I was so paranoid to use any of the utensils to cook. The sink was full of dirty dishes..and the tap in the sink was leaking. Shared toilet was ok but bathroom was stinking and smelly. And the showers was leaking too.
We had booked a double room with shared bathroom, the room smelt of smoke which was not good.
The good part is, the one who greeted us was nice. The sink in our room was working. Lodge is close to main road, Airport and Rental cars.
I would not recommend this Lodge to anyone, no not even for a night!

Stayed in a 4 bed dorm 22.50 NZD.
Rooms are dirty. Floors unswept walls and ceiling are cracked. Collection of pizza boxes on closet. Dirty mirrors and dripping sink in room.
Facilities are messy. Showers dirty - found three types of dead insects and lots of dust on the clothes shelf, shower head broken so be prepared for a vertical shower.
The owner is helpful and lives on the premise, but thats the only positive thing about this hostel
Internet stations available for a few NZD
Overall - stay away, there are better low cost hostels.

This place was definitely not what I expected it to be upon arriving to Christchurch. First off, it is far from the center of Christchurch. Second of all, it was disgusting. I was traveling with three other women and it looked like it could be sketchy and unsafe when it turned into night time. When we arrived, the receptionist/owner was gone for the day and left a note saying that our room keys were in the room. There were holes in the walls and the carpet runners were all worn and stained. They gave us the wrong rooms to stay and the beds were all messed up and people were staying in the rooms they told us to go to. On top of that, the showers were moldy and toilets were clogged. Also, the sheets looked filthy and old. The grouting around the sink and bathroom tile was all brown. Honestly, it was 10 times worst than a college fraternity houses, so don't stay here.

Everything about our experiance with this hostel was terrible. When we arrived at this hostel wich we had booked online the reception was emty, but there was someone playing the piano (wich is situated in a really narrow hallway where the rooms where). We stood there for a good 5 mins and after shouting "hello is anybody here" a couple of times the lady finally came out (of the door we had been standing next to all the time and looked like her apartment). We were sent to our room where this terrible smell and dirty, torn beds welcomed us. Kitchen was really dirty and smelly aswell along with the bathrooms. We ended up paying for another hostel (YMCA) and not wven sleeping in the room. Would not recommend this to anyone.

The lovely doddery old gentleman manager has been replaced by the more than capable Shona. A woman of Scottish descent, she has considerable local knowledge which she imparts to all who ask.
The place is homely, Still bearing signs of the earthquakes, but improves overtime I visit. The last time was my fifth and in the words of Arnie - "I'll be back!"

I don't normally write reviews but this place was so bad I have to warn people away from it. Myself and my boyfriend booked 2 nights. We only stayed coz there was nothing else available to change to in Christchurch so short notice. I know it was cheap but that does not excuse a place to be so dirty.
What I can gather its just a stopping ground for construction workers. Everything is filthy from the moment you step through the door, the reception, the kitchen, bathrooms, hallways etc.
We had to throw all the food away we had bought to cook there as there was no way you can eat off anything. We had to go and buy ready meals and use our plastic forks to eat.
We've travelled a bit and stayed in some pretty dodgy hostels before but this is by far the worst I've ever seen/smelt and stayed in!

Stayed in a private double for 2 nights. Couldn't wait to leave. Everything about this place was unpleasant, which is a shame as it does have potential and the owners did seem ok (on the one occasion we saw them - checking in).
Let's start with the room. It had a tv, fridge and sink, which were a nice surprise. This is where the nice surprises ended. I could defo smell urine from where I slept, possibly on the curtains or carpet (not me). There are biting bed bugs of some form - we woke up both mornings with fresh bites. The room was just generally very dirty and dingey. We even brought our own bedding in from the car as we didn't trust anything in the room. Ours was right opposite the common area, which is party city central apparently, so we were kept awake/woken up at 3am by screeching girls and shouting lads.
The common area was absolutely disgusting. I was not there to play drinking games, so maybe I'm being a boring sod, but the common room was purely used for this purpose and showed the relevant results you'd expect. Constantly smelled of booze and fags, rubbish EVERYWHERE. Really nothing good to say at all.
The showers were horrific, smelled of a mixture of damp, mould, BO, sick etc, basically disgusting! They were really that bad, they actually made my girlfriend heave when she walked past. The toilets ran out of paper and were not replaced by management.
The kitchen was filthy, no one appeared to do their own washing up. They were cleaned every morning but were in a state by dinner time again.
The whole place needs redoing and tidying. There are random items of debris throughout, old mattresses, chairs, rubbish, that have just been dumped and never moved.
I'm sure if you're just there to drink then sleep, then this place would suit you perfectly. But if you actually want comfort and tranquilly, avoid this place at all costs! It is the worst place we have stayed in 6 months of travelling.

Stayed here for 2 nights with my girlfriend, very friendly, welcoming owners who were very helpful.
Nice homely place, more like a guest house with a living area, kitchen and tv room.
The bedroom (5 bed dorm) was comfortable but only downside was one plug for charging between 5 people... (easily solved with an extension lead) other than that no issues and we had a great stay!

It was the second place I've stayed in Christchurch (and in New-Zealand), we went there because it was the cheapest and we stayed more than 2 months because it felt like home! Shiona, the manager, is more than lovely, she will make you as comfortable as she can. I had my 30th birthday there, I was sad to get that OLD! But she made that day the best of my BDs!
I've read some reviews and yes the place is not new but it is very cozy, yes the kitchen is sometimes full of dishes but this is because of the backpackers who don't know how to live in community and the manager will do all she can to make sure it's clean. I am away now but I still go back there sometime because it's my kiwi home, and we always go back home!
PS: Shiona time to time bake a cake and it's always DELICIOUS!!!
