We stayed here two nights while visiting the vineyards in the Marlborough region. Situated in the heart of some very famous wineries, this place is an absolute gem! From the welcoming note with our names on at the start, to all the other personal touches, we were bowled over. Ruth & Barry have given their a real French feel and flair. There are lavender fields, olive groves, French style furniture and the warmest of welcomes. Wished we could have stayed longer.

We pulled up to French Fields after a gorgeous 3 hour car ride and were overwhelmed by the expansive lavender fields . Ruth is the most hospitable owner who showed us into a lovely suite with every available amenity. Great lighting , comfortable bed, great shower and bathroom , quiet and peaceful. She is a wonderful breakfast chef and even gave us a ride to dinner. This B and B is a slice of French heaven in Marlborough.

We had a very relaxing time over the New Year at Ruth and Barry Struthers property French Fields and felt we found a hidden gem.
We stayed in Maison Lavande, looking directly on to the lavender fields where we could hear the bee’s busy hunting for nectar to take back to the hives on the edge of the property.
The attention to detail was phenomenal with an armoire that opened to reveal its hidden delights. It was a joy to have beautiful white linen in both the bed and bathroom and to be able to swim in the pool on a warm day.
We looked forward each morning to our breakfasts wondering what freshly picked fruits from the garden we would be treated to and were never disappointed. We had a vegan among us but Ruth rose to the challenge and this was very much appreciated.

After reading the great reviews written by others on French Fields in Blenheim, I asked the travel agency who organized our travel for 3 weeks in New Zealand and part of the 4 weeks in Australia to make reservations at this BB for two nights, from 4/12 to 4/14/ 2015. We arrived at about 1 p.m. with my wife sick. No one was there but as it was early we wait until pass 2 p.m. At that point I asked some of the neighbors if they saw the owners, called the phone given in our voucher, from where I got a detail message that gave other two phone numbers, which I called with no answer either. Left a message on both, with our phone number in NZ and asked them to please to call us back. Finally, after 3 p.m. we called the partner in NZ of our agent in the US. As it was a Sunday we needed to call the person in charge for such kind of “emergencies”. She called us back in a just few minutes telling us that she could not locate the owners either and recommended us to look right away for another place. Fortunately she was so nice that she decided to do it herself, and found us a nice place where my wife could rest. The next day we learned, from the person who was in charge to takes us in a tour trough the wine country that she called them with the same luck. Thus, we wasted a good part of our two days of such a nice place.
I think that the least they could do was to call us back and explain what was the reason of what happened. I need to mention that my agent reserved for this trip multiple hotels, BB, tours, shows, car rentals, air tickets, etc. and there was not a single problem with the rest. To the best of my knowledge they did not get in touch with them either. We found that New Zealand besides its natural beauty, have people who are wonderful, kind, educated, a real paradises of civilization. We already are planning to visit again next year. That makes the above behavior more difficult to understand.

We were dismayed to learn that this had happened to these guests We were away at the time and had reminded the agent before we left that our check- in time was 3pm and to make this clear to these guests. We did not have any contact details for them. Our son arrived before 3pm to welcome them and to host them for their stay. We apologise , and have taken steps to ensure better practices in the future.

We were in New Zealand for two weeks in January and stayed at French Fields for 2 nights. First and foremost, when you drive up, the lavender fields and the farm house are gorgeous. I thought to myself "are we in New Zealand?". The home itself and the rooms are French country and very cosy. We stayed in the Petite Maison room and it was fabulous. Everything from the bed, the balcony, the decor, was perfect! It far exceeded my expectations. There is also a heated pool, which is perfect for an afternoon dip.

The hosts are also fantastic and extremely helpful. They are quick to recommend fabulous restaurants as well as private drivers for wine tours. The breakfast made by Ruth is also terrific!

I could not say enough good things about the property and the hosts. If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is quiet and quaint, with easy access to town and the vineyards/restaurants, look no further! Highly recommend.

Recently spent two nights in the beautiful Petite Mason Suite at French Fields which is one of the loveliest B&B's we have ever visited. No detail is missed in this lovely place from the magnificent decorating to a welcoming glass of wine with appetizers to so many more thoughtful little things. Breakfasts were beyond amazing. We were even able to do laundry which was great on a three week trip. Ruth is the most thoughtful, helpful woman who has created a perfect setting in the Marlborough wine region. Thank you, Ruth and Barry for a most memorable stay which was a highlight of our New Zealand adventure! We so enjoyed getting to know you a little and sharing your amazing place!

"What a fabulous property" we thought as we drove to French Fields, a bit of Provence in the Marlborough wine country. We had think twice about where we were upon seeing the lavender fields and french country estate that was to be our future home. And a delight it was...the lodging, the hosts (thank you Ruth, Barry and Ben), the breakfasts (probably one of the best I've ever had in a B&B!), the quality time we spent there. Upon our arrival at the busiest time of the year, Ruth had anticipated our needs and booked us into a wonderful restaurant to celebrate Valentine's Day. She and Barry were full of helpful suggestions for various excursions in the region. We couldn't be more pleased with our too-short stay there. And would go back in a minute to see what wonderful things they have in store for future guests. Really a must-stay lodging in New Zealand's must-visit wine country.

Hands down the highlight of our long weekend in Marlborough, French Fields is a gorgeous Provence-style house nestled in amongst olive trees and lavender rows. It's only 10 minutes from Blenheim town centre, but you wouldn't know it, given that it's situated right in the heart of wine country. The rooms are beautifully styled, the bed AMAZING and the gardens just beautiful. What stands out above all that is the welcoming hosts who look after your every requirements, and produce a most wonderful breakfast in the morning. Nothing was too much trouble for Ruth our host, who even jumped in her car and raced after us to the airport when we'd left some wine purchases in the room. Highly highly recommended.

French Fields was the best part of our 2 week stay in NZ. We spent 1 night in the Petite Maison room and it was perfect. Even though we came at the time of year when the lavender was not at its peak it was utterly beautiful sitting on the private balcony with a cup of tea looking over the lavender and olive field and the surrounding vineyards, birds chirping all around. Perfect tranquility and relaxation. The owners who built the farm from scratch a few years ago were attentive and charming. We enjoyed the large delicious breakfast which catered to out vegetarian diet. The property is perfectly placed for winery tours and is a short drive from Blenheim. There is a pool and bikes available for guest use. Our only regret was not booking a longer stay!

Where do I start? French Fields was something that we stumbled across on the Internet and although they didn't have many photos on their website, we decided to go for it and see for ourselves. The fact that they had a great 2-for-1 offer was also a selling point!

When we got there, we could not believe our eyes... A whole field of lavender, complete with a petanque court, swimming pool, BBQ and even a little cottage shop where Ruth and Barry sell their home made lavender- based items, and also other little quirkly French items. Behind were the main house (where our lovely hosts reside) and next to it our petite maison where we were going to stay. Both were done up in excellent taste honoring true French country style, outside and in, and you really can't tell that this was in the middle of South Island in New Zealand! My husband had stayed in many 'gites' in France and he was amazed at their attention to detail. Our petite maison was plush with big comfy bed and luxurious linens; bathroom was top class with raindrop shower, underfloor heating, and lavender toiletries. There was coffee/tea making facilities, complete with home made cookies and other treats. Another feature of the room was the balconette with wooden shutters overlooking the lavender fields, which was an absolute delight in the mornings.

Ruth cooked her scrumptious breakfast meals to order using fresh produce, and her omelette was to die for! Having such breakfast overlooking the pool with the sunlight streaming through the window, nothing could get better than that. In the evenings Ruth and Barry proved themselves again as superior hosts by inviting us into their home for tete-a-tete and to have a pre-dinner apperitif with some hors d'oeuvres which she had made. They had made some excellent recommendations for a few of the local highlights in Blenheim (restaurants, vineyards, microbreweries) and we were very happy we heeded their advice. Blenheim itself was very easy to get around (either by car or bike) especially in terms of visiting their multitude of vineyards.

Overall French Fields was the perfect ending to our 2-week long round trip in South Island and we can only wish that we would have another chance to go back there to enjoy that experience again.
