We visited for two nights at the start of a tour round the South Island. We arrived early evening and were warmly welcomed by our hosts Alex and Peter. We were shown round and introduced to family members that were staying. Within a short while we were settled in their lovely old garden with a glass of wine looking out over the vineyards to the sea and the North Island beyond - an idilic setting. Later out host introduced us to another couple staying, which is one of the advantages of staying where there are only a few rooms. The house itself is 19th century and has been carefully restored by the current owners, with many of the original features. Our room, along with the rest of the house, had. Dry high ceilings, large windows and we also had doors our onto a lovely verander - this house is full of character. The next morning we watched the sun rise in the verander with a pot of tea. We then went for a walk in their 16 acres, through an old wood and back to see their 4 horses. As it was such a lovely morning we had breakfast outside. The breakfast spread was very good, consisting of a variety of cereals, yogurt, fruit salad, fresh fruit, warm croissants, and toast (with some home made jams and even marmite. Really liked the China cups, saucers and tea pot to help make an excellent cup of tea.

We decided to cycle to the local vineyard, and Peter kindly prepared the bike for us. This was a very good trip that lasted half a day. In the afternoon we used their pool which was excellent. It was heated and so lovely and warm, and was also a very good size so that I could swim lengths. We then lay on the loungers until the sun went in.

That evening we had dinner cooked by Alex. This was salmon and lamb. The lamb was in a red wine juice and I have to say that this was the best lamb meal that I have ever had. The food was excellent and well worth the $NZ 40 each for two courses. We were so able to drink our own wine from the local vineyard.

Peter and Alex were great hosts. They made us feel very welcome and were very relaxed such that we felt we could wonder around as we wished. It was great to talk to them both about life in NZ, the history of the house and the surrounding region, and also Peter took me around the house, explaining the structure of the house and how it was build. They went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect, being very thoughtful, switching the fire on in the evening in case we were cold, leaving cold water in our fridge, etc.

This was a great find, we really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the place and the great hospitality. A perfect start to our trip around NZ.

Ugbrooke was the highlight of our trip around the South Island & the favourite part of our holiday. Alex & Peter are outstanding hosts & not only warmly welcomed us into their home but also made us feel part of their family.
I loved everything about our stay; wonderful Alex & Peter, Jasper, Jimmy & Marty the gorgeous fur babies, the grand country home & beautiful estate and the surrounding vineyards. Alex is a superb cook & we loved relaxing in the grand dining room listening to stories about the history of the home & drinking the local wine. Fantastic conversation & delicious food & wine! We slept really well in the very comfortable bed in our grand bedroom.
We really wished we could have stayed longer & were very sad to leave new friends & such a beautiful location. Thank you for making my birthday celebrations so special.

My husband and I were looking for true Marlborough Wine Country and we found it at Ugbrooke.
The home is historic and grand. The tour and the restoration is amazing and ongoing.
The rooms are comfortable, but not overdone. They have a refrigerator in the room.
Breakfast is continental style (unless you want more) and is more than you will need to get you through the morning.
The grounds are beautiful, secluded. Look one way and you'll see the ocean and look every other direction and you will see vines all around.
Alex and Peter are, of course, wonderful hosts. Peter gave us an amazing day of wine touring. Alex's cooking is to die for. After our first dinner at Ugbrooke, it was very easy to decide on dinner for the next night -- Ugbrooke. Delicious local cuisine.
Definitely recommend.

Alex and Peter make this historic estate a perfect homestay. we spent Christmas with them and had the most wonderful time. Alex is a wonderful cook and made sure we had the most wonderful dinners throughout our stay in New Zealand.
The property is set amidst vineyards and makes for a perfect stay.

It was dark, it was the middle of winter, and we were cold, hungry and tired from a day of traveling. But, once we walked through the front doors of the Ugbrooke Country Estate, smelled something delicious coming from the kitchen, and met Peter and Alex, we knew we couldn’t have asked for a better place to call home while exploring Marlborough. We were immediately treated like long lost friends.

The Ugbrooke Country Estate itself is gorgeous, even in winter. The estate overlooks some of the best vineyards in Marlborough and the meticulously kept vines are beautiful even when they are asleep. We stayed in a beautifully decorated and spacious bedroom which overlooked gardens and vineyards. We can’t imagine the views during the New Zealand spring and summer. The house itself can only be described as impressive. Its restoration has been done with both passion and with an eye toward preserving a grand and historical part of New Zealand’s history.

One of the best offerings is that you can have dinner here every night, and we did! Alex is an amazing chef and we were able to enjoy local New Zealand dishes paired with some excellent New Zealand wines.

Our daughter went horseback riding with Alex and was able to see this part of New Zealand from a unique perspective. Peter arranged for a private olive oil tasting (which was great) and his knowledge of Marlborough wines helped us sort through the unique viticulture of the area. Visiting with this charming couple allowed us to learn about New Zealand from the inside. We loved our stay here and would recommend Ugbrooke to anyone visiting this beautiful part New Zealand.

On arrival we were met by the wonderful hosts Peter and Alex. The house is a living history of the surrounding area and has been maintained in its original late 1800’s style (with selective modern additions). Overall a fabulous place to stay. Alex is also a wonderful cook.

Really enjoyed the entree of local produce served on the lawn overlooking the vineyards at sunset.
Our hosts were very friendly, informative and helpful.
The house is a beautiful example of 1800's mansions.

I stumbled across Ugbrooke some years ago when visiting the Marlborough area, and discovered then that Ugbrooke and its delightful owners (Alex and Peter) really are something really special. Since then, my partner and I have stayed at Ugbrooke every time we have visited the Marlborough area, and we have made a point of unreservedly recommending it to anyone we know who might be travelling nearby. We've been back several times now, and spending time at Ugbrooke is a highlight of every trip.

So what do my partner and I love so much about Ugbrooke? It'd take pages to describe in full, but I'll try to boil it down to the essential points:

- The house itself is absolutely beautiful. From the heritage-listed decorative ceilings to the glorious original Art Nouveau wallpaper through to the antique furniture and the wonderfully kooky Victorian chandelier in the bar/lounge, it evokes a (probably mythical) era of Victorian elegance and relaxed grandeur.

- The setting is stunning. Ugbrooke is surrounded by vineyards, and farms, snug among gentle rolling hills. With the nearest neighbours being horses and chickens, it is the perfect peaceful getway spot. No noise, no traffic, no crowds! Lovely.

- Alex's wonderful cooking: another thing that never disappoints. Her chocolate lava cake is a favourite of my partner, who requests it whenever we visit; for my part, I find it hard to nominate a fave, since everything she creates in the kitchen is delightful.

- The rooms are so very comfortable. While each has its own modernised en-suite, our favourite room (the Awatere room) has an updated "original" bathroom, which includes a truly VAST clawfoot bath for lounging in, as an alternative to the modern shower next to it. Each room is set up in a slightly different style, so if you're thinking of visiting do check out the Ugbrooke website to see which appeals most to you.

- And last but by no means least, Alex and Peter are the warmest and most generous-hearted hosts you can imagine. They welcome guests as if they are dear friends. The first time we stayed with them, I asked them during the booking process if they had a particular bed configuration (two single beds that could be pushed together) in any of their rooms, and they *actually bought new furniture* to make that happen for us. I mean, who does that? But they did. Nothing I can say about how warm and welcoming they are is hyperbole - they take "going above and beyond" to new levels. They welcomed us like friends on our first visit, and over the years they truly have become good friends. If the world had more people like Alex and Peter in, I'm convinced it would be a much happier place. :-)

Because of the road closures we had to take the inland route from Christchurch to Blenheim, but nine of that disappointed! The drive was magnificent and the longer trip was completely worthwhile when we arrived at Ugbrooke. What a beautiful and historic homestead. I could just hear the walls talking of days gone by on this beautiful and picturesque country estate in the middle of fields of grapevines. Wife and husband team, Alex and Peter, are the most welcoming people you will ever encounter. Our room was spacious and decorated in period furniture. And if you are fortunate enough to stay here, DO NOT go out for dinner. You must stay en enjoy the superb food and dining experience in their ornate dining room with open fire. Alex's menu offerings and meal presentation was our best dining experience in our 2 weeks throughout the South Island. She matched and bettered any chef prepared meal we can across on our holiday. I can thoroughly recommend staying here!!!!

Arrived up a 2km gravel track after a long days drive to be greeted by a beautiful vista....Ugbrooke House proadly overlooking it's former estate. The rooms are huge and Pete and Alex provided a big friendly welcome. The house has a whole load of history so take advantage of Pete and Alex's tour. The dinner was very good restaurant standard, with the delicious Albarino wine from Stanley Estates recommended by Peter. All in all, don't miss your chance to live a little of the life style of a Victorian lord! PS If you are notof a gregarious nature, go somewhere else. This about being social and sharing...and good on Pete and Alex for makinig it so. Loved it.

Hi there, The train goes through to Blenheim so we are 25 kms away from that station. However you can ask to be dropped off in Seddon which is a little town a few minutes away. If you give me dates and times we could pick you up.? Best thing is to email me at Ugbrooke estate and we can go from there. Warm Regards, Alex
