Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a wonderful place to stay for three Tour Aotearoa riders as we had a giant 200km ride from Fox Glacier over the Haast Pass to Makarora. Kenna was a brilliant host. Cooked us a wonderful dinner and we were able to do much needed laundry without any fuss. Rooms were perfect, had all amenities we needed and very comfortable. Stunning views.

We loved staying here. It was a great stop off between Queenstown and Franz Josef. Very comfortable huge bed, all very clean. Friendly host. Amazing views all around with just the sound of birdsong. Very short walk down to a cafe/bar in the evening.

We absolutely loved the double room we stayed in, which was at the back of the property. We had our own bathroom and kitchenette, which was well equiped, neat and clean. The room was peaceful and quiet. At night we could hear the sheep having a late night conversation from the balcony, which only added to the experience for us. The bed was so comfortable, as was the couch. We will stay here again if we ever pass by.

We spent one night at this place, now known as Makarora Mountainview Wilderness Accommodation with the intention to take part in the Siberia Wilderness Experience Tour - however the tour had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Rick and Kenna have created a little haven for travellers on their property with several rooms available for accommodation. We stayed in the Kea room and really enjoyed our time there; beautiful clean mountain air, a stunning view (despite of the low cloud) and far enough from the road to Haast that traffic noise did not interfere with the peace and quite of the rural environment. There is no Television and no phone reception - but for us these were no priorities at all. Kenna has a real knack making people welcome and the accommodation was comfortable, roomy with nice curtains and a great bathroom and bed - and Kenna provided ready advice where we could get something to eat. Certainly above the average quality for accommodation we have come across in the last four weeks. Thank you guys!!!

The mountain views were stunning, we ate dinner and breakfast outside on the veranda. So peaceful wish we had more time to stay longer. Our view was restricted by the house but still had a wonderful view. V clean a nice surprise.

The building was great looking over the valley and the room and ensuite were very comfortable. It is overlooking a valley and the mountains on the other side were covered with snow. We were very well looked after by Rick and Kenna they were very helpful in organising for us to do a flight around the area.

Awesome place to stay! Everything was clean and ready to use. Rooms are lovely, bed was super comfy, great shower and great mountain views. My room was comfortable and cosy with a balcony to relax and enjoy the afternoon sun and birdsong. Makarora is a very nice quiet place surrounded by beautiful big mountains. Place itself is equipped and came with a free kitchen, which consisted all cutlery and kitchen equipment - toaster, kettle and fridge. The location is wonderfully quiet and means a great sleep. I highly recommended this place to anyone who wants to stay in a beautiful and unique location. Atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing. The best thing about the place are the hosts. They are very welcoming, friendly and good people. If you will be nice for them then you have chance to listen interesting stories about Waitaha People-historical Māori iwi. TIP! If you will tell them that you are from Peter-Cyclist then you have a chance to get a discount! It is definitely worth of it!

Lovely environment and quite comfortable room for the price. I was just really disappointed that the view in the brochure was not the view we got. Very good pub down the road for food, trips on plane or helicopter up to the mountain with walks back. Friendly community. Owners kept to themselves.

I stayed two nights here and they were possibly the most peaceful nights of my New Zealand travels. Rooms are lovely, bed was super comfy, great shower and yes, you do get great mountain views. If you want to avoid the crowds of Wanaka, don't just zoom through Makarora, take time to stop here and enjoy a slice of truly lovely rural living.
