The first two nights we were given a tiny room where my wife and I could hardly move around in, much less open our suitcases. Then they moved us to a reasonably sized room. We loved the compact kitchen appliances and washer and dryer etc. even though we really didn't have time to use them. The room cleaning and restocking of supplies were poor but response to our requests were excellent. The location is great.

We booked the Aitken on the strong reviews on Trip Advisor. While it is exactly what it is supposed to be, it's definitely not the 4th best hotel in Wellington! It's a budget traveler's hotel, and has sparce and small accommodations (hard bed, tiny shower, etc) But, it is very clean, very functional, and nicely situated. And, as everyone else noted, the washing machine and kitchenette is great! So, I'm fine with it being highly rated as long as people also note that it is a budget place!

If you're tight on cash, and want somewhere to settle into for a few days, this is a GREAT place. But, if you're looking for a nice lux apartment, check out the Bolton, which is much nicer but has all the great features of the Aitken. If you're young and spry, the Aitken is great!

Nice apartment style motel/hotel. Is near the railway and bus station, so very handy to connections on public transport to all over the city. Very reasonably priced through the www.wotif.com website.

Bus transport within the inner city seemed to be only $1 a trip, so you can just catch the bus nearby at the bus station and head down Lambton Quay/Courtney Place to save your feet in order to find the shopping and restaurants.

There was a dishwasher, front loading washing machine and cooking facilities within the room! Also had Sky and free internet access.

There was not much noise from the street at night (we were on Level 5). The hotel is not located in the midst of the nightclubs so that is good for sleeping!

Bathroom was modern, clean and well appointed.

The only SMALL suggestions I would make to the hotel would be to include airconditioning (it was hot weather during our stay), and to get some drapes for the windows which were only covered by venetian blinds (the light came in the window very early in the morning).

Otherwise a great stay and we would definitely go back again.

Stayed here for one night in March 2005. Nice location, near the Parliament buildings, but a bit of a walk into the city centre where most of the restaurants are located. The rooms are marvellous, very new decor and excellent facilities, including kichenette with all the mod-cons (i.e. washer/dryer), a TV, CD player stereo etc. The hotel has more of a serviced appartment feel to it, the reception closes at 10pm for example, but this was perfect for us and the rate was great for what we got. Definitely recommend staying here, especially if you're on a long trip (as we were) and need to get some cheap laundry done in the privacy ofyour own room.

We stayed in this hotel during the Wellington Sevens tournament...lucky to get a hotel at all!

We werent expecting much for the money we were paying, as we were lucky enough to check --- for last minute deals..expecting to find nothing...but got a great deal!

We were surprised to find a virtually brand new building with great facilities in the room. A short stroll to the Westpac Stadium, bus and trains, a supermarket a block or so away, good coffee next door! And really the walk to Courteney Place isnt that far at all... Would certainly recommend staying there to anyone...as we have already booked in for next years 7's tournament.

Average room but the price reflects this. The window looked out onto a wall about 3 foot away, otherwise a hotel in a very central location for the ferries, shops and train. It is essential that travellers are aware that reception closes (and is unmanned) after 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. You may then find it difficult to pick up your key!! They will send you an email telling you this on the day you arrive, but if like us, you are travelling and are an i-diot (i don't internet on travel) without an i-phone, you may find this unhelpful.

The hotel is well situated, reasonably priced, the front desk unhelpful and the room views non existing.

Location:
The Aitken is located on the north end of the downtown Wellington area. It's about a 5 minute walk to the parliament buildings and about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the Te Papa museum. There's a supermarket about 2 blocks to the north and the train station (and shuttle to the Interislander ferry) is about 2 blocks to the south west.

Room:
One of the biggest advantages of the Aitken is that it is stocked as an apartment and has a fridge, washer/dryer combo, oven, range, microwave and dishwasher. We only had the chance to use the washer/dryer and we had some problems with it. While the wash cycle worked fine, we had to run the dryer cycle twice and even then our laundry was still damp.

Another issue we had was that when we arrived, there was used soap in the shower. That made us question if the apartment had been fully cleaned since the last guests left.

Yet another problem was the lockbox at the front where we were to receive our keys the night of our arrival. Since we were arriving late, we contacted them ahead of time and they gave us a code we could enter on the security box at their front door. Unfortunately, the security box was basically broken and wouldn't take the code... fortunately (for us), we were able to slip our key out without ever getting the code entered successfully. While it was nice that we were able to get into our room, it wasn't very reassuring for the security of the building.

Maybe the biggest issue we had though, was the massive construction project that was going on right outside our window. We started to hear construction workers at about 5AM the morning after we arrived... that escalated into frequent riveting-machine noises at about 7:30AM. Fortunately for us, we needed to get up early that day... but if you get a room facing the construction project, don't count on getting a sound night sleep unless you're an early riser.

Internet:
While this location claimed to have free, unlimited wireless Internet, we had a number of problems with it. For one, we arrived late (after midnight) on our first night and called down to the reception to get an access code. We were told that we'd arrived too late and we couldn't get a code until the morning.

The next morning we called down and got a code. We were able to connect, but got an extremely poor connection. There was only one very small corner of the room where we could get a reliable connection. It generally took about 5 times as long to access any given web site as I would expect with a good connection.

This is just incredible value for money- a studio serviced suite with dishwasher, washing machine, kitchenette, DVD player, TV, stereo and free WIFI broadband slap bang in the middle of the CBD. Booked through Wotif for a week at $90 a night, would certainly recommend to anyone travelling either for business or pleasure. So far staff have also beenvery friendly and helpful.

Rooms itself not too bad and convenient for railway station. However, arrived at 1705 to see receptionist just leaving. Were told that as we had not checked in by 1700, they sent us an email about an hour before to give us access instructions, on the basis that "everyone checks their email on iphone these days". Obviously we are not the type of people that class themselves as so important that they think the world will stop revolving if they don't instantly access their emails when on holiday. Grudgingly then given keys. No towels in room, had to call for help. Very hot with limited window opening, and one of teh two rooms had a view of a blank wall. Not impressed!

Just got back from Wellington last night and stayed in this 'hotel'. We missed checked in but they were very orgainsed and had left the key in a lock box at the front of the entrance doorway, you buzz and someone gives you directions to open and then you are good to go!

The room was a king and single, although the king was 2 singles pushed together, you couldn't feel the join.

It was also 3 blocks from Cafe 93 - very good food and quick service. Go out hotel, turn left for one block and then right for 2 blocks. It's on the left hand side.

The shower pressure was good. You have to take a hair dryer with you, but all else is there as they are serviced apartments for the most part...so you can cook and clean washing etc.

Great place that's clean and just what you need mid meetings.
