I booked a single room with ensuite not expecting anything amazing, especially when only paying 90ish dollars, but even with the bar set low it didn't meet my expectations. Firstly, all I wanted was an adequate bed to sleep on. After pulling back the covers and sitting down I slid down into a crater that had formed at the centre of the bed. Thankfully I was too tired to care initially but after waking up a few times it began to bother me. I opted for the floor which was far nicer. Just for the bed alone I wouldn't recommend staying in this room. There was other minor issues with damage done to the bathroom, no plug for the bath and stains on the walls, but these things were superficial.
My partner and I stayed at Hotel Waterloo & Backpackers for a weekend in Wellington. We had a private room with ensuite bathroom. The room was tidy and clean, located at the end of the hallway (quiet - Bonus point!). The staff was friendly as well. The Hotel is in a perfect location: close to the Beehive and in walking distance to the CBD, Te Papa, Cable Car etc. Can recommend!
I want to first of all say that the staff member that served me was a nice soft spoken English man who was kind and charismatic and personable, I appreciate his spirit despite everything. I had booked a room in a 6-bed dorm but on arrival the poor old building seems neglected. I saw other reviews comparing it to the American Horror Story hotel (where a zombie emerges from the bed) and the movie The Shining and that is honestly not an exaggeration at all. Such an unwelcoming environment and SO GLOOMY - the people in my room and in the common area were the type of guy you avoid on the bus… likely homeless or addicted. Paint peeling, curtains and light fixtures falling down, multiple cracked windows, mouldy windows, people’s gross belongings everywhere, weird pee smell/ dank laundry smell, absolutely foul smelling fridge, skinniest mattress I’ve ever seen. Things were good enough for a homeless shelter but not for $70 a night. I’m a teenage girl and there wasn’t a single other girl or traveller even (though I only took about 30 minutes to decide I couldn’t stay there) as well as creepy people so I was genuinely considering my safety and the safety of my belongings. The type of place you don’t want your bare skin to touch anything porous like sofas or matresses or carpet. super dusty and as an asthmatic I just turned right around and left. Bathroom was strangely clean though! Weird, scary common areas. I was just waiting for a rat to run out of somewhere. Anyways I got most of a refund from the lovely guy at the desk after he tried to reason with me over the conditions.…
Firstly I must say that the receptionist (a lovely quietly spoken man) was the BEST feature of this hotel. Really great customer service skills for him! 10/10. The four bunk room however was sooooo terrible! Smelt so bad, and had a huge stain on carpet. When we walked in we all just literally fell on the beds laughing because we all knew there was no way we were staying!! The bathroom was pretty grotty. I think we stayed long enough to get ourselves together and exited the hotel asap. Did't want to ask the lovely gentleman for a refund and reckon $27 each for such a great laugh was worth it. Sorry guys. The room smelt like the carpet hadn't been cleaned in years, like my teenagers sock draw lol. Anyway, thanks for the great service Mr xx
I stayed in the backpackers part of this hotel for 5 days in July. The first night I got there, the police was trying to control some couple's argument which got to the point of needing separation. The room was cold, windows wouldn't close, it was dirty, not organised, the light of the room wouldn't work. The bathroom was quite dirty as well. As I choose my bed, I realised there were no pillows available for any of the three empty beds neither blankets. Furthermore, as I was making my bed, I found several hairs on the bedsheets. One of the nights the couple came back and the fight lasted form 10pm until well past midnight, when I went down to reception to call the police. They told me they were known in the place?? They had other random people who displayed signs of being high on something or crazy. My last night a girl staying in my room kept leaving the place and coming back, leaving the lights on and making loud noises. This went on for a couple of hours until 2 or 3 am. Definitely not a safe place and very disappointing.…
