Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Enjoyed the convenience of the hotel. Friendly helpful staff at the check in counter. Beds were reasonably comfortable. Housekeeping staff and Restaurant staff were polite and helpful. Would definitely stay again.

Bad ordour from lift to rooms from renovations going on in the hotel floors. If you have hyper sensitivity or suffer from allergic reactions to glue or industrial chemicals, best to check with hotel before you book. Not a pleasant stay this time. Not informed prior and I feel this was a Health and Safety issue.

Disappointed Really was expecting a more exciting or charming room. Newly refurbished King was pretty dull, no welcoming feel, harsh lighting, one robe per room & just disappointing for the money! No water provided, not even filtered tap in the fridge. I did complain & was told to drink water from the bathroom tap. For the money we felt very disappointed. Made a mistake booking here. Staff were great, nothing to fault there.

The choice of room service food had decreased in quality and variety and increased in cost since 2023. It was difficult to get replacement glasses/crockery and utensils. Part of the hotel looked unkept and run down.

The James Cook Grand Chancellor is a large hotel towering over the downtown area of Lambton quay. The facilities are great with bedding and room being well appointed. The hotel is extremely close to fast food outlets and the Kilburn cable car. The bus from the airport drops you at Lambton Quay within about 100 metres to the lift in a lane to the hotel lobby. Breakfast service was a sheer delight. With plenty of food and of a significant variety. Bedding was very comfortable. The hotel offers a service where you accept a minimal room clean they provide a $10 voucher for Dinner only. Be careful as I did ask if this applied to breakfast and told yes but was denied at checkout. Before agreeing to the minimal cleaning make sure you can actually match the imposed conditions to use the voucher during your stay.

It was an amazing night, restaurant was exceptional and the bubbly in the room was cold to our liking. I am definitely recommending to friends and family. Easy access to Lambton quay and parking was easy

Great central location. Comfortable & clean room. Friendly & helpful staff. Pillow menu was a lovely touch! I use a memory foam pillow at home so to have this option made my stay even more comfortable.

Awesome location. Clean rooms. Junior staff. Food was good . Lobby was inviting . Would stay again because of the location and if staff were friendlier . Probably would stay again but my expectations would be lower

I have stayed at The James Cook on a number of occasions and have always found it to be a great experience. This time we were checked into a room that was already occupied, but nothing was too much trouble for the staff to make an alternative arrangement and provide us with accommodation that suited our needs perfectly. All staff members were friendly and helpful and rooms were comfortable and clean. Would definitely recommend a stay.
