Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The biggest selling point of this hotel is its location. It's a less than 5 minute walk to Courtenay Place. There is a New World supermarket directly across the road. The water front is minutes away. Te Papa Museum is a 5 minute walk. And if you're on the Kent Terrace side of the hotel you'll have a great view of the city. We were on the top floor (11th) and the view was a stunner. You could see the ferries coming in/leaving.
Yes, the hotel is old. The decor is dated. But they charge appropriately. Parking is available at the rear of the hotel too. I would stay again because it was a good price point. If they ever decided to pour money into renovations they could charge like a wounded bull so book here while the pricing is still reasonable.

Have stayed here several years ago and thought it was a bit of a dive.

Work booked us here as it was central to a function that a group of us were attending and I thought really!! Well what a pleasant surprise. The hotel has had an update. Easy check in and plenty of parking. We were put into a king room on the 11th floor with great views around Wellington city. The room had been repainted, recarpeted and had new furniture.

The bar and restaurant area looked great. We had excellent and friendly service from Phill at reception, in the bar, and at breakfast the next morning. We spent an enjoyable couple of hours in the bar. Breakfast the next morning we chose the continental and it was just fine for our needs.

Whilst not the flashest hotel it is comfortable and has great service in a central location with good views.

The main issue with this hotel was the rather dated rooms, the whole place needs a thorough overhaul, in our case the windows would not close properly and our first night in Wellington was very very windy and the noise and draft coming through the window was intense. Called the night manager who was sympathetic but was unable to offer us an alternative room ( we were on level 9 ). In the end we were supplied with a roll of duct tape which I taped around the window frame. It helped but not a lot.

We cleaned old urine stains from the toilet, the black stains around the light switch were removable, which we noticed by disinfecting the place. Same for the stains on the nightstand. Hair from previous guests on the blanket. Place really needs TLC and more cleanliness. Also, there was noise throughout the entire night. It sounded like someone was opening a faucet, filling a bathtub and then draining it immediately afterwards. This spectacle occurred periodically every 15 minutes. We talked to maintenance multiple times, and they said there was work done on the pipes and they wanted to look into it. They weren’t able to fix it and didn’t offer compensation. When we asked for at least a reduction of the room rate due to the noise, all they were able to offer was free breakfast, but it was too late as we had to board the ferry.

Booking was done directly on the Hotel's website.
Check in from 2pm translated into checking in after 4pm over an hour after we arrived, we were simply instructed to go away and come back later!
On the at least four occasions I was at the reception, I had to explain again to the same receptionist why I was there - to check in ! ! !
Reason given room was not ready, was lack of staff and a full house the night before LOL.
Room provided was not what was booked, nor did it match what they advertise on their website.
When we queried issues with staff we were passed to Manager, she said she would get back to us in a couple of minutes when she had checked our booking - that translated into over half an hour before she turned up at reception - after she was again called away from another activity. Her arrival took the form of wanting to book us in, totally disregarding she had promised to call us back.
Even when I showed the Manager (a) Our Booking; AND (b) Room Info on their websiste, I was told I was wrong LOL . . . So we left.
Payment was processed immediately, Credit took significantly longer to be processed, despite there being there being less than an hour between payment and refund.
Several staff were covered with visible tattoos, they may have been excellent employees, but that is not everyone's cup of tea, to us, not at all professional for the hospitality sector.

Stayed for Lantern Festival weekend & the location was wonderful enabling us easy access to the Wharf Area, Museums, Supermaket across the road, The Cable Car & the Botanical Gardens.
My wife asked for a view of the harbour & was given a 10 floor room overlooking the wharf area which was unexpected & very much appreciated with the room ticking all the boxes. Room Service was very efficient especially delivering milk jug & parking the car wasn’t, excessively expensive.

New staff very helpful but didn't make me feel 'special

We have stayed here on 2 previous occasions and the hotel publicity had promised that rooms have undergone upgrades, prices have risen accordingly. Unfortunately whilst rooms may have received a lick of paint and some new soft furnishings our bathroom had badly cracked and chipped tiles as well as a noticeably grubby floor. The room overlooked the fire station and was noisy and the situation was not helped by a window which was difficult to close. Staff were helpful and professional, the location is good but facilities are below a reasonable standard.

If you have a burning desire to visit Wellington and all of its amazing sites then want to return to your accommodation for an authentic 1980's Chernobyl experience, this is your place.
The room was very small which barely allowed for my nightly yoga routine. The fittings looked older than Jesus himself and I feel as though the lights emitted more radiation than reactor No.4. The bathroom should be listed in the wonders of the world because I've never heard a more comparable noise to a Boeing 747 taking off as I have when flushing the toilet.
The food at times could be compared to the remaining antelope corpse you'd see lions fighting over on animal planet. I guess you get what you pay for ( I didn't pay, cheers NZ government for covering my 14 days isolation).
The staff were lovely and catered to our every need. This goes a long way, they must have been very busy but still maintained a positive attitude so for that I tank you. Don't even get me started about some of the army boys too.
I'm into the whole 20th century Eastern European vibes and reminds me of fond memories. It's also a nice treat when you step outside after 14 days and get reminded that you're actually in the capital of a first world country. Cheers for everything Bay Plaza team.

Great location if you need to be close to Te Papa. Handy supermarket across the road, and easy stroll down to courtney place for food. Room was comfy, bathroom is somewhat on the retro side but shower pressure was very good. Only downfall is that there is no AC in the room although a fan is provided - it doesn’t cool the entire room. We were lucky to have a room on the top floor with a view - but do beware that even being on top floor you will still hear the city traffic.
