Was our second stay here in a sweet twin room. The room was great, the other guests were very friendly but not the usual guests you'd expect in a backpackers, locals?? The rough looking guy slouching on the sofa when we arrived told us he was staff but didn't even get up when we arrived , just pointed to where our keys were. There were already used towels on the floor in the communal bathroom, and in the morning all the bathmats were wet and more used towels lying around. Every sink in the kitchen had dirty dishes in it. One loo (lid up) had been left unflushed full of paper and worse. Stunk out the bathroom

Arthouse Accommodation is such a lovely place at such a good price. The staff are so friendly and can hold conversations so if you like banter this place is ideal for you. There is communal showers and toilets which are tidy, great shower pressure may I add! There is board games and books in the dining room for everyone to use, A tv in the lounge room with multiple channels that cater to different languages and a little mini mart in the reception to buy snacks and toiletries from. Thank you Arthouse for making me feel at home I will 100% be back!

Stayed here with 8 friends and had an excellent time! Staff were super friendly and accomodating - moving an extra mattress into our dorm to allow us to all stay together, and letting us check out a little later than usual. Beds were super comfy and dorm was very clean, bathrooms were also very tidy. Snacks available for sale and location convenient to the CBD and water front. All round excellent. Would return.

I stayed at Tauranga for 2 nights. As soon as I entered the facility, there was a group of people at the counter and not one greeted me, including the staff member. I actually had to be the one who made myself known to the group. Then, the guy proceeded to tell me about the hostel but with an attitude. I truly felt like I was being judged because I didn’t speak the language he was communicating with the others. It’s like, he was the Mean Girl of the hostel and he wanted to assure you that he was. Back home, I work in customer service and I knew that I wasn’t going to be staying there another night. Whilst he continued to show me around (which mind you, he didn’t even recommend things to do), I noticed that nobody spoke to you. This hostel is full of long term stays where they’ve all built close bonds with each other, this also includes their staff as well and they do not like people who are temporarily there for a night or two. A bit silly if you ask me. I came to this hostel wanting to make friends and ended up leaving Tauranga early because of the terrible atmosphere. Solo travellers, do NOT stay here. I would recommend it to people who are staying for more than one night or have friends to stay with.

This hostel is advertised as a no drink/drugs hostel but do not be fooled, the atmosphere was more ‘party’ than any other hostel I’ve stayed in (all of which were not alcohol free). I specifically chose this hostel because it said it was alcohol free so I assumed it would have the calm/quiet atmosphere I was hoping for but I was totally wrong. On the first night there was a speaker playing music in the kitchen so loudly that guests in the kitchen were having to shout to eat other just to have a conversation! There are signs everywhere saying it was quiet time after 10/11pm but this wasn’t the case at all. There were also signs saying there was a $50 charge for anyone who didn’t do their washing up and yet the kitchen was constantly so messy it was almost unusable - I couldn’t find a single clean cup to even have a drink of water! It seems very unfair to advertise this as a dry hostel with a ‘quiet time’ when this is hardly the case at all. If you’re young and like to party then this hostel is perfect for you! If you’re a solo traveller wanting a restful experience then don’t book to stay here!!! The room was spacious and I appreciated the two pillows and big locker but I absolutely would have sacrificed all of this if the rest of the hostel had been as advertised.

Hi there. Thank you for your recent review and feedback. I am sorry that you have had a less than ideal experience with us recently. We have had recent staff changes as a result of this kind of thing coming to our attention. I only wish you had called the management phone number and discussed with us at the time as I would have been very quick to act on any of this kind of thing happening had I known of it. We do pride ourselves on trying to be drug and alcohol-free and offer a safe and quiet place to stay, so it is upsetting to discover this has not been the case. REst assured we have attended to this matter straight away. I appreciate this doesn't help with your experiences with us here at ArtHouse however all we can do is move forwards with changes in place. :-)

Stayed here twice, once in a female dorm and once in a private room, great location for Tauranga center and the bus stop is 5 mins walk away. Perfect if you are looking for a quiet night stop over. The showers are clean and hot and the kitchen had everything I needed. Lovely clean rooms and beds.

The important things are excellent - the hostel is clean, beds are comfy, and you're around the corner from bus stops, pubs, and great cafes. However this hostel felt more like student accommodation and housed a lot of long termers who worked as fruit pickers. I found this encouraged a cliquey/less friendly vibe. For the price, I would personally rather pay less and have a more traveller, passing-through, communal feel. There was also no outside area which in the summer, you really miss.

We stayed here for a quick overnight visit while attending a concert in the city. We booked a twin share private room. Room was very clean and tidy. Beds comfy. No noise policy which was great. Bathrooms just across from our room (11). Great for at night. Aircon a plus. Clean and tidy Kitchen. Lots of fridge space. Little area to relax with beanbags great. Bathrooms and shower tidy. Loved the signs in the bathrooms re: how to leave a toilet after using it. Wanted a photo of this to use elsewhere! Only complaint was showers opened out which was a bit of a tight squeeze. Especially if you were changing in the space provided. The girl next to me had a bump as she was trying to take her clothes off and get in the shower. Quickest check in ever! Great service and very friendly helpful staff.

The staff at this place are pretty stuck up, and unfriendly. I arrived at around 12ish, at which point the guy at reception told me I couldn’t check until 2...which is fine, but he was reluctant to show me around or even engage in any kind of conversation. There’s a group of long termers that kind of dominate the place, thus making it difficult to integrate. Also no free WiFi. Wouldn’t stay here any longer than 1 night.

Hi there, thanks for your review. It is our policy to only accept Check-ins from 2pm onwards as is the case with most accommodation providers as we are all frantically busy trying to get everything done before this time due to previous guests leaving. I am very surprised to hear that you encountered a "stuck-up" staff member as we have very friendly staff here and most of our reviews reflect this. We do hope you enjoy your travels throughout NZ.

Good location and Friendly staff. It’s a short walk to plenty of restaurants and bars which was great. The WIFI was really good - hard to find in NZ. Bed was comfy and shower was good. However we had a skylight in our room so we woke very early with the sun!
