Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An unique and upmarket boutique hotel. Lovely high ceilings, exquisite use of marble and restoration work is top class. The bathrooms are a dream, hand held and rain shower are working nderful in the dark marble recess. We can not fault the service and the general ambience.
The ten rooms are each different and take advantage of the quirky shapes of the room space.

We are regular guests at the Clarence hotel and it is always a great stay. The renovation of the old post office means the rooms, bar and restaurants have a unique ambience. It's great coming down the stairs to the buzzing bar with the friendliest bar staff, and now Simon Wright is head chef in the Bistro, it makes the restaurant experience very special too.

Converted from the former Tauranga Post Office we stayed a couple of nights in the hotel which we really enjoyed. The room was spacious, comfortable though the one "comment" would be the TV screen was difficult to manoeuvre. Room-served "continental" breakfast was good value, the bar served interesting "snacks". Good parking within the hotel grounds. Would strongly recommend. Good value.

Stayed in a Queen Deluxe room on a Friday night, but unfortunately we were kept awake by the music from the bar downstairs which didnt finish until around 2am!
Had we known the bar was open until that time and could be heard from the rooms we probably would have chosen to stay elsewhere - guess we could have investigated further prior to booking but it was last minute during school holidays so not too many other options available.
As a side feel the bathroom with its dark tiles and fittings, could do with more lighting, especially above the mirror, not easy to apply makeup well with the dim lighting in what is quite a dark room.
Despite the above, the room was quite nicely decorated and the bed was very comfortable with quality bedding and linen.

HI Twosillybulls, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay with us. Both positive and negative is vital to improving our offering. Although our central city location is desirable it does come with general city hustle and bustle. We are aware of the local nightclub in question and are working to ensure they abide by noise restrictions. We have recently installed extra soundproofing windows to help alleviate this issue. I have noted your comments on lighting in the bathroom and will bring this up for discussion at our next management meeting. Warm regards, Ashley

The building is beautiful and it's great to see old buildings restored and preserved. However, the hotel is tired and needs some TLC. Unfortunately. the boutique hotel element we found a bit overstated as it is more a restaurant/bar with rooms. Check-in is managed by the person behind the bar - we waited at least 5 minutes before we were acknowledged and greeted.

We managed to get a table for dinner, although there was very limited availability and were disappointed as we expected more based on the prices which we thought expensive. The fish of the day was a very small portion, served without accompaniments for NZD42.

Pretty average experience for a so-called boutique hotel. On the plus side it's got a good location with free car parking and spacious rooms. On the negative side the restaurant is closed, the bar had limited food options, the bedroom is dark and dingy and there is no breakfast option available. However, a big 'no-no' is the staffing who are a mixed bunch of disinterested youngsters, many of whom, are inexperienced overseas workers who have no obvious supervision. The loud 'boom-boom' music that emanated from the bar/kitchen area is clearly a choice of staff and may well explain the lack of a convivial atmosphere and almost empty public bar on the evening of our stay.

HI tigersChristchurch, Thank you for taking the time to provide a review. Glad to read that you enjoyed our spacious rooms and rated our cleanliness and location as 5stars. To clarify one of your comments so people reading your review understand, we previously had two restaurants however due to the national staffing crisis and the current state of our economy it was not viable for us as a business to continue operating two restaurants in the Clarence Hotel. We have melded the two restaurants into one offering, now called the Clarence Restaurant, offering both a la carte and a Set Menu for those guests who would like to have a dining experience guided by our favorites. I am happy to advise will be operating breakfast in the very near future. Currently we encourage our guests to join our sister restaurant Picnicka for brunch, a short 8-minute walk from our hotel, we provide each room with a coffee voucher.

We decided to have a family gathering at The Clarence Hotel in Tauranga. The rooms were OK but nothing special. The meals were a disaster. The food was poorly presented, our waiter had a attitude problem, most of our party left the restaurant hungry after opting for set menu Italian evening meal which was excessively over priced. Breakfast was no better but our waitress efficient and friendly.

We have just checked out of this lovely hotel. In our opinion it’s a high quality abode which has been renovated from the Old post office. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food offered in the bar/restaurant of good standard and at a fair price. There is free car parking on site which is always a bonus. The only slight negative is that there is no breakfast on offer. Having said this our room was large, spotlessly clean and the included premium channels (Netflix, Prime) were unexpected but very welcome as the rain did not stop during our whole stay.😔 We will have to come back to see it in the sunshine.

I’ve been staying in different places in Tauranga for around a year, and have just discovered this little gem. If your a fan of the QT Hotels, this place is your nirvana. Quirky, top notch restaurant and awesome gin selections with extremely talented bar staff. Service is awesome. Staff can’t help you enough. Beds are amazingly comfy.
The down sides are road side rooms are a touch noisey as this is a historic building and no double glazing. If you want an early night (before 10) rooms above the bar do allow the music through faintly(just the bass), but it is turned down at a reasonable time (9:30-10pmish), and they now do breakfast...... Definitely my new place to stay in Tauranga.
