Unfortunately I can´t give zero stars, so it has to be one.This is the worst hostel, I have ever been. The staff is rude, the dryers are not working and there are no lockers or door keys. So everybody can come into the room. You have to keep your worthy belongings always with you. The kitchen is closed from 10-12am and when you want to grab some food to make breakfast, you will get problems with the staff. It's the same in the evening. You can´t have a late breakfast or dinner. The most of the guests are weird long-term people with no tolerance with the backpacker-life and no behavior. Furthermore it's pretty cold, especially in the night and the morning. You're freezing like hell. The blankets are not smelling fresh and the rooms need a vacuum too. And when you leave your stuff outside because you DON´T have lockers, you will get problems. The best thing is, that when you complain about something, the answer is: "This is your problem!"
The kitchen is pretty bad equipped and the dishes aren't cleaned properly.
The last thing I want to tell you is, that the location is pretty bad. You have to walk half an hour to the next supermarket and an hour to get into the CBD. So when you don't have a car it's not really suitable for backpackers with a lot of stuff to carry.
So please keep away of this horrible hostel!!!

Stayed here for a weekend in a double bed private room, incredibly tidy and clean accommodation. The communal areas were well kept, beds are very comfortable. Friendly atmosphere, great staff! I would recommend to all travelers into Tauranga who are seeking affordable accommodation.

Hugo and Carter’s backpacker & motel is a really good accommodation. We initially planned on staying just for a few days, and we liked it so much that we stayed for a month ! The staff is very kind and friendly, they make sure your stay is going well. The rooms and common spaces are well designed and perfectly clean. I sincerely highly recommend this hostel !

Excellent service. The staff were attentive and always ready and prepared to help. Whether it was laundry or providing additional towels, they helped. Could not have asked for more. Room was a decent size, two bedrooms, one bathroom, kitchen area and a bunk room.

A lot of bad reviews about the OLD OWNERS but Bell Lodge has been taken over by a lovely lady called Emily and she is amazing, she has completely changed the hostel. Renovations are still going, it’s becoming more modern by the day. I have loved staying here! Clean, comfortable, good prices and amazing people.

The rooms were absolutely dirty. The mattresses and blankets had dirty marks on them. The roof was flooded with spiders and their webs. We had to remove 6 spiders out of the room which were right on top of the upper beds.
This was the most unpleasant and disgusting hostel I’ve ever stayed at by a mile.
We stayed here because no other hostel had beds for the night, but don’t ever book this.

Hi, I am really sorry that that was your experience staying with us. I would like to acknowledge though that you must have visited in the first week we took over or while the old owners were still here as we took over on the 12th April. We have since done major renovations with all new beds, linen, bathrooms, flooring, painting etc. If you look that the photos that have been uploaded or visit our website, I'm sure you would notice a huge difference. We have got new cleaners on board that are doing an awesome job and we have got very high standards for cleaning. I hope that if you are back in Tauranga you will consider us again or at least pop in for a visit and we will be happy to give you a tour so you can see for yourself.
