What delightful little gems these cottages are. The hosts are very friendly and are obviously working really hard to modernise and update this place. It's very clean and tidy and has all you need for a basic self contained accommodation. The mineral pool out the back was a great touch. Free access to a washing machine was a huge plus, however a clothes airer would have been great as the small clothes line didn't fit our clothes. Great location, pretty gardens and just a cute accommodation

A good stay here at Phoenix Resort. One could be confused by the name, as this is not a resort per se, rather a Motel with large grounds.

The guy at Reception was really friendly and showed me to my room. The room was a 1 Bedroom Apartment. Downstairs is a small living area, kitchen with oven and dishwasher and a bathroom. Past the kitchen is a door out to a small enclosed Pool Area. The mineral pool is rather nice, be warned the hot water comes out at about 75°C, so definitely pays to keep a eye on it. Up a fairly steep staircase is a bedroom with a king bed in it. There is a small balcony area off the bedroom. Room wasnt advertised as having lake views, but the bedroom had pleasant obstructed views of the Lake.

The Motel is located on the main drag, so can be a bit noisey with cars and trucks, especially in the morning and evening busy periods. I slept fine, but maybe something to note for those used to a quieter sleeping environment.

I found the apartment really clean and tidy, and tastefully furnished. Large TV in the lounge, with Sky TV, no movies though. Small TV in the bedroom with the basic channels.
Parking is at the back of the unit, with easy access through the pool area into the apartment. Only a few minutes drive into town, and just across the road from the lake.

The negatives I can think of would be the inadequate heating. There is a small wall mounted fan heater in the lounge, and a small panel heater in the bedroom. On a cold, wet, miserable night in Taupo, it was a choice between leaving the noisey fan heater on all night, or letting the unit go cold. Would be great if the apartments had a heat pump or some other efficient form of heating.

Also when I walked in the first time, the bathroom had quite a strong 'sewer' smell. Could be the geothermal activity, so I opened the window and left the fan on for a while, and it seemed to dissipate the smell.

The only other negative was the lack of power plugs in the upstairs room. There was only 2 double plugs, one occupied by the TV and the Heater, and the other right in behind the bed, which made it a right pain to plug in phones ect overnight.

All in all a really good stay here at Phoenix. The price was alright for the offering, and I will definitely stay again if the price was right.

A hidden gem! The location is great and the property is charming. The owner is very friendly and helpful and grows amazing roses for guests to enjoy. The unit was very clean and quiet large. It has full kitchen facilities, complimentary DIY laundry, including wash powder! The mineral bath is super hot and a nice treat. Overall a great place for an extended stay. Highly recommended.

Our Travel Agent booked us into the Phoenix Resort as we had to cancel our stay in Napier due to the cyclone. This is not a resort, more like a motel. The lady at reception showed us to the room and where we could park. The room didn’t seem particularly clean so after she left I pulled back the covers to find that the bed hadn’t been changed and the room hadn’t been cleaned. The receptionist was very apologetic and after ringing the housekeeper said there had been a miscommunication and the room needed to be cleaned. We decided to walk into town and get some food whilst they did this.
The room is very basic and in need of a refurb. The shower cubicle is small and the water pressure kept dropping. Didn’t fancy using the “spa bath” which is in what looks like a wooden shed at the back of the room. Not very appealing! Walls are very thin so you need to hope for quiet neighbours. As our booking had to be made at short notice we had no choice but to stay here. I certainly wouldn’t choose to.

We always choose to stay at the Phoenix Resort when visiting or travelling through Taupo. The Hosts are friendly and helpful, you get a discount at the pools up the hill, and the hot pool in our room is always a magic experience for our family. Highly recommend!

We stayed here for 4 nights and had a great time. The owner was very welcoming and helpful , giving us suggestions of what to do in the rain. The room was clean , and well equipped. We did not use the thermal bath that came with the room. The shower in the bathroom was powerful and well equipped. There was free parking at the property.
Just across the road and past a hotel is the lake with loads of walks and cycle ways, you can walk into town from here , its about 15 minutes. Food can be delivered to the room. Great base to explore the lake taupe area

A nice family run resort with spacious rooms that provide everything you need. Fridge & freezer, dishwasher, stovetop, microwave. The private hot tubs in each room are a big perk. They fill up fast and it's easy to manage the temperature. What a luxury to have your very own refillable hot pool! The hotel is a little bit on the outskirts of town, but the driving is easy and parking is plentiful. It was very quiet and comfortable and I would stay here again.

We had a studio. On the plus side it was clean and had plentiful hot water and a designated parking space. Also free laundry facilities The downside is it’s on the corner of two main roads and the spa pool is in a lean to shed at the back open at the top. Also the kitchen is ok but very sparsely equipped. Don’t expect luxury - it’s a bit flimsy and dated.

We had a great stay at Phoenix Thermal Resort and found the hosts very welcoming and accommodating. We had one of the units with the bedroom upstairs and a lovely balcony overlooking the lake. The garden is lovely and being able to park the car behind your cottage, very convenient. Lovely owners and highly recommended.

Booked after our booking at Clearview was cancelled.
$350 for one night in a very tired and run down unit. The “spa pool” is tired with flaking paint and rusting nails. Not inviting at all. Doesn’t stay filled has to be drained and refilled each time. No views and awkward parking off a busy road. No restaurants in walking distance.

How close to a main road? i.e. quietness. How far to walk into town to a restaurant?
Answer from kenleesyd
Sydney, Australia10 contributions25 helpful votes
Concur with all previous answers. The hotel is located on the main road, but it is on the quiet end of town. I certainly did not notice the noise and the rooms are well insulated. It would not be fair to describe the distance to town for restaurants as 'walking distance'.
