Detailed Reviews
On arriving we were warmly greeted & shown our respective suites, & presented with with a bottle of wine. Location & views were amazing, the entire lodge is beautifully decorated & there was nothing that was too much trouble for the hosts
The all inclusive breakfast was next level from the fresh fruit to the amazing cooked breakfast selection. The two suites we had were superb, having a spa on the decking under the stars was lovely. On arriving back at our rooms we found them fully serviced & restocked (including the complementary chocolates) after a day exploring was much appreciated.

This is a small family owned and run boutique lodge with many attractive features. Its location offers panoramic lake views, and it is well located for a range of facilities, including an excellent lunch and evening restaurant within 0.8k walking distance. The Acacia Bay area also offers a range of most delightful bush and lakeside walks nearby, together with a plant nursery, art and pottery workshops. It is short car ride into the Lake Taupo resort itself.
The Flying Trout décor is classic and sophisticated, amenities are unusual, with a full snooker table, well stocked honesty bar, spa pools, and an all-weather tennis court.
The spacious rooms are well appointed, with large tv with Netflix and DVDs, fast Internet, and outdoor seating areas.
In addition to this, the hosts are most welcoming and there is a family atmosphere which is delightful. Breakfast is truly excellent with a great range of home prepared continental and traditional dishes and features.
This is not a cheap lodge, but is extremely good and we thoroughly recommend it to you.

Karen and Rob welcomed us heartedly and assisted us to enter our Tui lakeview suite. Our suite and the common lounge and dining area were full of ornaments and frills; Rob and Karen like to create a cozy atmosphere. Chocolates were offered in our room as Karen and Rob love chocolates as much as we do. Rob is the chef ("the kitchen came with the house") and prepares a complete breakfast with croissants, toast, choice of eggs or smoked salmon, a selection of preserves and honey, fresh berries, yoghurt and cereals. Rob also explained us a better return route to Auckland via Mangakino and along the Arapuni lake to avoid the bottleneck of Tirau, it saved us considerable time.
Our absolute favourites for a delicious dinner in Taupo were The Brantry and the Bistro.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful and comprehensive review, Rob & I really appreciate it. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you both during your stay with us and we are very happy you enjoyed yourselves. Also we are glad you decided to take the scenic route back to Auckland, it is pretty amazing scenery along Horahora Road by the river. We hope to see you again in the future if you are ever back this way and in the meantime wish you good health and safety in these current times that we are all experiencing. Many thanks Karen & Rob

From the moment we arrived until our late morning checkout, the service and serenity was five star quality as promised. We had a beautiful room overlooking the lake, complete with a huge spa bath to melt all of the days stressors away.
The breakfast in the morning was absolutely equisite, and appreciate all of the little touches that were catered to perfectly - including some birthday cake pops to celebrate my new year!!
Thanks to both of you for making our stay wonderful, your positive energy and the beautiful home you share with your guests.

I can’t say enough about my stay at The Flying Trout Lodge. Not only was the property stunning, the rooms were beautiful, spacious and had everything you could ever want. Our hosts for our three day stay were able to direct us to the best restaurants and help us creatures perfect itinerary each day. Well we loved to explore Taupo, we equally enjoyed our time at the lodge in the hot tub, playing pool or just relaxing. The breakfast was delicious and provided us with all the energy we needed for a day of hiking and exploring. For me there is no other choice on where to stay in Taupo!! Enjoy

The location cannot be bettered with extensive views over the Lake and surrounding mountains. Breakfast was stunning and huge. The suite was luxurious and comfortable. Advice on local restaurants, places of interest and walking trails was invaluable. Absolutely one of the best holidays I have ever had.

My wife & I had an excellent two night stay in the Tui Suite. It’s huge, with a wraparound balcony, a separate walk-in sitting room for luggage, and multiple chairs for lounging. The bath had dual sinks, a walk-in dual head shower, and a large jet tub. Karen fixed a great breakfast and provided excellent recommendations on places to visit during our stay. The Lodge is an easy 7-8 minute drive outside of downtown Taupo, in a very quiet neighborhood (a car is a necessity). This is a terrific place to both relax and use as a base for experiencing the Taupo area.

Our stay at the Flying Trout was wonderful. Rob and Karen are fabulous hosts, who greeted us warmly and gave us the tour of the property, and we instantly felt at home.
Their home was warm, and beautifully decorated. The views of the lake and surrounding area were spectacular, from every vantage point.
We were offered a complimentary bottle of wine, of our choosing when we were having the tour. There was a billiard room and bar.
The room we stayed in was bright and very spacious with a huge dressing room and an even bigger bathroom with a spa bath - again with views of the lake. The bed was comfy, and warm. The basket of chocolates were a very nice touch, along with the chocolate bar on the bed. The room had it's own bench and sink, fully appointed with tea and coffee making facilities.
Breakfast was included in our stay. Continental followed by a cooked breakfast. We both chose the Big Breakfast. It should have been called the huge breakfast! It was delicious and after consuming the continental breakfast first, I wasn't able to do the cooked breakfast justice. The next morning, I skipped the continental and Karen made a smaller plate of the cooked breakfast for me. Still delicious, and I managed to finish it all this time! Sorry Bessy (dog) no leftovers for you that day.
Rob and Karen had great tips on places to visit and eat, and gave us a printed sheet with directions on how to travel home via a different, much more scenic route.
We will definitely stay again, and highly recommend this lodge.

My husband and I recently spent 3 fabulous days at The Flying Trout Boutique Lodge, Taupo. Hosts Rob & Karen made us feel so much at home the moment we arrived and left no stone unturned to ensure that our stay was as comfortable as possible. They were so helpful in advising us what to see and do around Taupo and we thoroughly enjoyed the many long conversations we had, on topics ranging from travel, art collection, health matters and even politics! Thank you Rob, I learnt a few new things from you! We took the Kiwi Suite, in a very private part of the property, fronted by a beautiful courtyard and the room had everything we wanted....it was so nice to wake up every morning to a view of the lake and the scent of iceberg roses right in front of our door. Yes, Rob has 'green fingers' and makes sure his garden is well manicured. The piece de resistance was of course the breakfast! Just tell Karen what you want the night before and she will whip up a scrumptious breakfast the next morning....many a time we skipped lunch because we just ate too much for breakfast! The location of the The Flying Trout is also a plus point, just minutes away from town yet in a very exclusive neighbourhood. All in all I definitely give this place the full 5 stars they truly deserve. Thank you again Karen & Rob, we were sad to leave but one would definitely feel this way when you are leaving friends that you have known for years, as that was what your wonderful hospitality made us feel.
