My partner received a telephone call to confirm booking. Upon arrival we forgot to read our email about instructions to key code for door & placement of key. The owners are down to earth & very friendly. Accomodation met our needs & is affordable clean, tidy & orderly. The premises is located in town close to everything. We were very pleased with our short stay & we will be definitely recommending & booking again :)

Brilliant hostel: stylee / textural: super clean. Bunk bed with lake view, albeit over Parisian rooftops! Urban meets wilderness. Super service too. Very well designed: feature timber floor: shall def return.

The showers on the upstairs corridor were genuinely the best I've had in NZ - one even has beautiful views of the lake and mountains. Apart from the wonderful heat and water pressure of the showers, the hostel is lovely. In such a great location only a street away from everything in town and the lake, with free and easy parking. The bedrooms are clean, bunks sturdy and there are loads of little chillout areas to make yourself at home. A really nice, convenient place to stay and go exploring.

Had the best stay at Taupo Urban Retreat. The staff were super friendly and really helpful with booking our activities. The kitchen was kept very clean and the bar was really cheap! Will definitely be staying again if passing back through Taupo!

My husband and I stayed just one night during our visit to Taupo. Our 4-bed dorm room was small but comfortable. The beds were really cosy. Not too many plug outlets and no lockers though. Downstairs showers (next to the laundry room) were clean and really hot. (I didnt use the ones on our floor, but I think they were busier.) Bar in the hostel. We didnt use the kitchen area. Taupo itself is really cool!

I've been to New Zealand twice now and on both occasions have stayed at Taupo Urban Retreat. It's just the best - clean rooms; friendly and super helpful staff; great atmpshere AND they offer a monster deal on their chilli! Honestly if you stay there (and you SHOULD when in Taupo) then try their chilli. They also have an on-site bar so that's fun, said that it is not a party hostel and you can have a good night sleep. 100% recommend this hostel!

We stayed in a four person dorm for a couple of nights and it was one of the nicer hostel experiences we had in NZ. The beds were comfortable, the sheets were clean, the room was tidy and not too cramped. The room also had good wifi. The kitchen area is open with plenty of shelf- and fridge space for visitors and has plenty of equipment you can use. There's a pub in reception, you can have your drinks outside in the garden or in the dining area. The staff is friendly and cooperative. You can also order dinner (chili) from reception, and it's delicious. The location is very convenient as it's only a short walk away from the i-site, the lake and Pak-n-save.

Not a bad hostel, has good deals on drinks and dinner. Bathrooms were okay, not the best facilities but clean and hot showers so good enough. The beds were terrible though. Foam mattresses so worn through that I was sleeping on the slats. Very uncomfortable. Apart from that though, this hostel is decent and in a great location being close to lots of activities and sights in the area
