Wairakei Resort Taupo has garnered mixed reviews, with some guests appreciating the clean, comfortable aspects of their stay, despite a dated atmosphere reminiscent of the 1970s. While the beds receive commendation for their comfort, opinions diverge regarding the amenities, with several travelers noting maintenance issues and limited facilities. Service quality varies, as reports of unresponsive staff contrast with experiences of helpful personnel. Value for money is a common concern, with numerous guests feeling the offerings do not justify the high costs, particularly given the outdated and sometimes unclean rooms.

We were travelling in the North Island of New Zealand and noticed a promotion by Wairakei Resort Taupo, so decided to stay one night. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay and were very impressed with the huge property and manicured grounds, including several thermally heated pools. The staff in all areas were welcoming and friendly and seemed happy to see the resort busy and “alive” after the lack of tourists because of Covid. The complimentary buffet breakfast offered next morning was delicious and plentiful. Thank you Wairakei Resort for a lovely experience.

I'm writing this as I'm dismayed at the previous review! Sure, I haven't used the tennis etc courts but there were plenty of folks using them happily during the last school holidays. We've stayed here for 35+ years & return again & again, including 3 fabulous Christmas Day meals. The thermally heated pools are wonderful to sink into & relax, & one is a lap pool. The food is excellent, especially the buffet breakfasts & specialist buffets, & the ambience of the Pavilion Restaurant is fantastic for all ages, & in school holidays there's a lovely friendly positive buzz. The grounds are beautiful, with increasing bush walk/paths to wander down. You can walk/bike to the Honey Village & Huka Falls etc. There are bikes & golf clubs for hire. We haven't used it but there is a beautiful looking golf course opposite & the International Course is just up the road with a nice cafe we're told. The rooms are fine, in our experience they're gradually updated over time; do we really need a brand new carpet to enjoy this beautiful haven of an iconic hotel?! The facilities are always clean, & the bar at the Wairakei is a lovely area, with friendly attentive staff, plus tvs if you want to keep up with sport, to relax after a day out hiking, biking etc. All the staff are incredibly polite & attentive. We are already booked for our next trip, & select the Wairakei over Air BnBs, as it doesn't quibble over Covid Level changes, etc., & it's a one stop destination, when we're not visiting family in the area! Hint; join up as a member & you get free breakfast as well as 5% off room rate, which is a great deal!! And book ahead ... It's great for conferences too. Go stay here!!

Our family with teenagers stayed as a pre-Christmas treat.

Pros: service was top notch. The male waiters in the Geyser bar were fabulous and we felt so relaxed. I would return again simply to enjoy the service and atmosphere that the Geyser bar service team create.

Cons: facilities are outdated and showing signs of neglect. Breakfast delivered was in a cardboard box with disposable utensils. While this breakfast alternative was advertised as being Covid related, it felt more like a cost saving measure eg less food and less service staff required.

All in all Wairakei resort is still clinging on to life and there is hope. It just needs care.
I so wish the Loh family from oriental holdings, who own this establishment, would invest money into maintaining it. A few decades ago I am sure this would have rivalled many resorts, but now it seems to be slowly bleeding out a painful yet avoidable resort death. The garden paths, restaurant, lap pool, buildings, furniture etc… are all in desperate need of refurbishment. Such a shame and I left feeling a bit sad to see such a historical piece of Taupō being neglected.

But I am hopeful it will get the millions of dollars invested into it that it needs to bring it back to life. Once that happens, we’ll be back.

I understand your comments on the breakfast and we are glad that I can advise that we are able to service the buffet again since this mroning. Of course we also acknowledge your feedback in regard to the need of a refurbsihment. Everything has been pushed back this year but we are still working on the plans for the Resort-wide refurbishment. Sincerely, Felix Witte Front Office Manager

The person who checked us in was great, and it was down hill after that. Stayed here 25 years ago and thought it might still be as good, what with the booming tourist market.
The room was in an old part of the building and should be named the Museum Suite. It was 1970's New Zealand. It had a number of interesting features: a cupboard door that disconnected a hinge when opened, a toilet that washed the seat and surrounding floor when flushed and creaking floorboards that sounded like an alarm rather than a scene from a horror movie.
The floorboards in the hallway also creaked when people walked past the room. The door closer on the room door and another in the hallway made sure the doors slammed shut with a bang.
The hallway smelt of detergent, the type used in rest homes and hospitals. (A bit unnerving for someone of my age)
Almost forget, the public toilet next door that could be heard flushing.
I could have asked for another room but the place had me enthralled. I was waiting to uncover the next undocumented feature. Yes, an electrical fitting attached by wallpaper.
The lower pool was interesting too. Users had scratched their names in the layer of scum around the pool. Outdoor spas need work too.
The good bits? The bed and pillows and the shower.
In summary, the owners need to stop dragging all they can out of the place and put some money back in. The room was a third rate experience at a first rate price.
Mentioned some of my gripes when checking out and there is a rumour of a makeover for the place. It sure needs it. It is only saved by the good people who work there.

Dear JacktheLadd, Thank you very much for staying with us again and taking the time to publish your feedback! We do appreciate your detailed comments about the Heritage Wing very much and your review has already been shared with the Executive Management. I do apologise for this underwhelming experience you made in the Heritage Wing. There are some points you raised that we can't change at the moment, but others that definitely are not acceptable and this will be followed up with the department heads. We do agree that the rooms and other areas of the Resort are in need of an upgrade and the plans for a refurbishment are not only a rumour. It is only a question of getting them signed off and finding appropriate dates for this endeavour which will need to be carefully planed considering the size of the property. Thanks again for sharing your feedback! I would be grateful that if you decide to stay with us again, you got in touch with me directly as I would like to take care of your reservation myself. We booked two rooms between Christmas and New Year to enjoy 3-4 days with our parents.
Unfortunately, the amenities advertised such as the Tennis Court were in a bad state. The astroturf on both courts is ripped at the serving line and a major risk to all players. But the resort still provides racquets and balls, and a disclaimer notice on the fence you play at your own risk. These courts could easily be glued and repaired and should be closed until such time as they are in a fit state.
We also had a dreadful and expensive ‘brown bag breakfast’ that cost $56 for two people. With the restaurant unable to offer the usual breakfast buffet, guests need to order breakfast to be delivered. The bacon and egg muffin was cold, squashed and inedible with the runny yoke having dripped all through the fresh fruit salad. We didn’t bother for any further breakfasts and ate outside the resort.
While we appreciate that this resort is older and the grounds are beautifully maintained - the location and setting isn’t enough for $330 per night with tired decor, dangerous activities and poorly executed breakfast options.
This resort does need investment to bring it back to its former four star glory or reduce its prices and advertising ambition back to an average accommodation and conference centre so expectations are met.

Dear rachaelp9, Thank you very much or staying with us and taking the time to publish your honest feedback. We have tried several options to glue and fix the tennis courts, but unfortunately the ground below the turf makes this very difficult. The courts are implemented into the refurbishment plan. I'm very sorry that the breakfast was a disappointment. We are aware it cannot be compared with the buffet but given the fact that we are catering for over 400 guest in the morning for breakfast we have little options available. However, your feedback has been shared with the Hotel Manager. We are currently at different options to provide breakfasts under the red light. Your comments on the maintenance and need of refurbishment have of course been taken on board as well. The refurbishment has been pushed back under current circumstances but we are still planning to go ahead. Thanks again for your feedback, we do hope that we can welcome you back sometime in the future. Sincerely, Felix witte Front Office Manager

We were looking at places to stay in Taupo and spotted a good deal online at Wairakei resort, so booked it for 3 nights
it is just on the main road 5 minutes before you get to Taupo township itself (going south).

Although slightly dated in places, we found the resort to have everything you need
We stayed in a 'chalet' that was in a block with other chalets and the room was plenty big enough.

The buffet breakfast was a real bonus (included in our room rate) and had a good selection of everything you would need.
The pools were nice, although we noticed out of the 6 spa pools, only 1 of they was an actual spa pool with spa jets - the others were more like hot tubs.

The staff were very friendly and upon arriving in our room we found the fridge had defrosted and was full of water, but someone came and emptied the water from the fridge and turned it back on for us - that was a nice touch.
They had good tea / coffee selection and had moccona coffee (a lot of motels / hotels give you 'budget' type coffee) which was very nice

we would happily stay here again

Right from the reservation we had excellent service. We extended our booking at the last moment and this was confirmed with a phone call. Our room overlooked the main pool and it was very clean and comfortable. Good idea to have the shampoo/conditioner and body wash is large bottles in the shower. I wont pack these items next time. We dined in the restaurant twice and the meals were top notch. My husband had the same thing twice and it was so good. Beef cheeks while I tried the Kumera gnocchi the first night and the angus steak the next both meals were delicious. We found the reception staff very knowledgeable about the area and helpful with a smile. The only negative, which didn't alter our pleasant stay was that some of the main area where there is heavy foot traffic where worn and tired looking. Otherwise a great place to stay the thermal pool was a wonderful way to end each day. We will be back.

We spent five nights in a Spa suite here in late January, having booked only the week before when our plans for the Greenstone concert fell through. It’s not far out of town and easy to find.

The rooms were clean, well appointed, quiet and comfortable.
We enjoyed the range of options at the breakfast buffet. We didn’t have dinner there during our stay but the Mexican & Kiwiana buffets sounded great.

There’s a small warm water pool, with a useful bar including snacks, and a decent lap pool: they could do with a separate pool for people with children as all chance of relaxation disappears when the little ones arrive.
We don’t play golf or tennis but the facilities for these looked good.
The staff were friendly, polite and helpful; we had no problems during our stay.

I appreciated the hotel’s sustainability efforts, with lovely smelling liquid soap and shampoo in dispensers rather than wasteful little bottles. My biggest gripe was the lack of a decent shower caddy - the stall is a bit small to put bottles on the floor if you’re tall. I’m also not sure you need a TV in both the lounge and bedroom but perhaps some people want this?!

We stayed in the Waiora King suite with a balcony and were very happy with it. The bed was comfortable, the room tidy and warm and reasonably quiet. We were disappointed that the main pool was not available but still enjoyed several dips in the spa pools. Breakfast was included in the price which was good value and we had a lovely 3 course meal for a very reasonable price. This is a great place to stay if you have children or just as a couple. This is our second stay there and would stay again but would advise the rooms towards the back of the complex to make sure you have a peaceful nights sleep.

This was our first time staying here and I have to say that we wouldn't stay here again. We booked a room online and at check out was advised that for $10 more we coukd have a more modern room and the clerk said if it was him he would pay the extra as the other room we had booked was much older. I requested a room by the swimming pool but was advised that it was out of order even though I had been advised earlier in the week that it would be operational on the 22nd of May which is when we check in. The other lap pool which was operational was on the complete opposite side of the hotel from where we were, so it would have been a pain to get to. Parking was pretty bad, we ended up parking on the grass as we would have to walk quite a distance to get to the entrance of the building we were in. The room itself was hardly luxury. The bed was 2 twins pushed together and it had a hard lump in the middle where it joined. Not comfortable at all. The shower was pressure was poor, overall not a great room and this was billed as newly refurbished. So yeah, not somewhere I'd recommend or go to again.

Dear lissyc72, Thank you very much for staying with us and taking the time to publish your review! I'm very sorry that your experience didn't live up to your expectations! and we are disappointed to read I apologize for the wrong information you received regarding the pools and sauna. We had painted the swimming pool and it was supposed to be open but the work on it took longer than expected. I also am sorry that the the 200 metres from the main building to the heated lap pool was too inconvenient for you to walk. I do understand your feedback around the bedding and will bring this to our Housekeeping Manager's attention to follow up. Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback. While I wish you had a better experience, it is feedback like this that we learn from and use to improve. We work hard to deliver an exceptional guest experience, and it's apparent in this case that we fell short. If you give us a chance to earn back your trust, I can assure you that we will do our best to give you the great hotel experience that so many of our guests have grown so fond of. Sincerely, Felix Witte Front Office Manager
