This was once a preeminent NZ tourist hotel in the 70’s. Sadly a lot of this hotel is stuck in the 70s still. Positives are friendly staff, large rooms. Negatives are a basic bathroom … maybe the most basic toilet suite ever?…the hotel is well worn…worn carpets, very dated decor. The biggest point of note is food costs. Main courses at $36-46 and only served in the pub is ridiculous. The food was good though! But a buffet breakfast for $46 (inhouse guest rate) is the most expensive hotel breakfast I have ever seen in NZ. Similar hotels eg Distinction Luxmore Te Anau is $32. Even the 5 Stat The Rees hotel is $36, and that’s buffet with a la carte options. In summary “You can’t be serious!”

One of the worse places I have ever stayed . The amenities were terrible, dated and tired . The whole place is run down and in a dilapidated state. No restaurant , no daily room service, Tennis courts, golf course, outdoor pool in a dreadful neglected state and a complete eyesore. Carpets threadbare and stained . No air conditioning in the room, just a ceiling fan that was about 30 years old along with the bar fridge. Shower over an old bath a health hazard, difficult to adjust the scalding hot water flow. I know it will be the usual response to this comment, but nothing will be rectified . It’s all about running this place into the ground like the Chateau Tongariro Hotel. It’s only a matter of time before this once beautiful resort will eventually end up in the same demise.

Recently we had booked to stay at 'Wairakei Resort' for 3 nights with our 3 older children. Due to change in circumstances, our sitter had fallen through with our 8 month old twins which resorted in us having to bring them along. The resort was notified straight away (spoken with Joy) as we were happy to pay an extra fee if needed but we were told that was absolutely fine. We were travelling from out of town so arrived after check in time (3pm) and were greeted by Francis, whom was very accommodating. From then on it went downhill....We arrived in our "Family Villa" Room 338 to be exact to find out we were staying in what felt like "Emergency Housing". The room itself was very neglected and run down. The room had a very bad odor lingering, the microwave had a strong curry odor in and was not clean inside at all, and the carpet not only had burn marks/large stains but also smooth edge around the perimeter exposing nails creating a health and safety concern. We then made our way back to reception to express our concerns with whom I believe was the manager on at the time (Joy) who was the opposite of accommodating but was very dismissive and rude. We were told there was another family villa available but wouldn't be ready for 2 hours. (5.30pm) After inspection (Room 340), the room itself was very similar to room 338. From then we decided to look for other accommodation in Taupo due to feeling like we were no longer welcome after raising our concerns. Discussing this with Joy, she became very rude implying that 'she let our twins stay for free' and that there was nothing she could do. With it being holidays we were very limited to what was available so had no choice but to pay exorbitant rates. Sadly we are just one of many whom have experienced this, (over a year later) there is yet to have any maintenance done. We will no longer be visiting nor recommending this 'Motel' to anyone.

My husband & I travel between Auckland & Wellington frequently and we always stay at Wairakei Resort. We have always found the staff friendly & helpful. The rooms are always clean & the beds so comfy. We are members so breakfast is always included in our tariff and we thoroughly enjoy it. The carpets might be in need of replacing in some places but we find it just part of Wairakei. I’ve been staying at Wairakei for over 50 years, as growing up it was our family holiday spot and I’ll continue to keep staying here.

Let's be honest. This is not the Ritz but great value for money. Yes, the resort needs money spent on it. This was our second stay within six months. $200 for a king bedroom with a good bathroom and buffet breakfast included. Check-in does take a while due to starting at 3pm instead of 2pm and only running 2 staff on the front desk. Maybe go back to an earlier check-in or run extra staff as waiting in line for 25 minutes can be frustrating. This is also a problem if you need to talk to the front desk as a booked in guest. We had to as we both like an extra pillow for reading and once again only one spare pillow in the bedroom. Once again, we enjoyed the onsite bar for drinks and a meal. This area provides good service and a good choice of options. The ability to park up and have a meal and drinks in one place is excellent. The breakfast buffet has plenty of variety and goes down a treat. We have enjoyed this on both our stays. If you are wanting some where for a couple of nights' accommodation, this place is fine. We will certainly stay here again.

Unfortunately I left a beautiful silk pijama in the bed and even if I called the same day we left and the days after the hotel said that housekeeping did not found it. Somebody must have taken it, as I am 100% sure I left it in the bed. That is really annoying, this should not happen in this kind of places.

Dear Traveller, Thank you for your time in writing a review, and we appreciate you getting back to us. we have lot of requests for lost property and over past month because it's the busiest months of the year the silk pajama must be in the lost property room and could be under the other lost property boxes that we have stored in there, but if the housekeeping manager have not come across it we apologize to you for that, we have been working hard and it must have gone together with bedding sheets towels or duvet sets while the housekeeping maids stripping the room your comment wont go unnoticed since we will further discuss it with the relevant teams. Kindest Regards Wairakei Team

After a road trip over 4 days in the rain, we were looking forward to 2 nights in Waireki. We had such a terrible checkin experience, we ended up getting a refund and driving back home to Wellington instead. Reception was understaffed and the Staff that were on were not particularly friendly. Our room was not ready to go into at 3pm and got told it would be at least another 25 mins. I suggested (sarcastically) maybe we should wait in our car (in torrential rain) until the room was ready - receptionist agreed! When room was still not ready they gave us a different room - got in there to find the fridge/freezer door open and water dripping out and soaking the carpet. Called reception multiple times from room but no response. Packed up, waited in queue at reception again to get a refund and left. Hallways smelt damp (it had been raining hard), carpets were dirty and the whole place was generally run down. Very disappointed. Worst part was we paid $380 a night!!

If you have no place else available to stay in Taupo then still find somewhere else. I felt sorry for the receptionist on duty who must have despaired when I went to the front desk three times, but really? This accommodation is rated as a four star "resort", but sadly it is extremely overpriced for its lack of functioning commodities and its unkempt facilities. Tables were not clean on arrival, cigarette butts were just outside the patio door, locks to the patio were broken, light bulbs were missing, there was no bedside light for one person, there was mould in the bathroom and in one fridge - that took three requests to have it cleaned, the air conditioning was substandard, there was no linen service for one of our rooms for the four days we were there, and there was no linen to clean or dry any plates. There was no hot water on our last day, the tennis courts and golf course were unavailable, and the breakfast was one of the most ordinary one would find anywhere! Most of it was barely warm, the "gormet" spaghetti looked liked good old "Watties" tinned spaghetti and the crispy bacon was not! One of my party lost a nightshirt, which we believe was caught up in the sheets for cleaning, and sadly no apology was given, nor an offer to find it, and certainly no offer of recompense. Housekeeping staff were not always polite, and the fire alarm debacle at 3.00am one morning, was yet another sign of the dysfunction of the property. In these days disposable income is limited and when choices have to be carefully considered, this was certainly not value for money, thus I repeat - choose this only as a last resort!

Many gardens are overgrown. Entrance area is dated and messy with furniture stacked around the place. Have to use pokey rear entrance for our room. Pass by service area with rusty furniture strewn around (incl in the bushes). More overgrown plants. Doorway is dark and dilapidated and door has damage/rust. Carpet in rear entrance area is completely threadbare and a trip hazard. Find our room past another service area. "King bed" is actually 2 singles pushed together. Mosquito on wall. Spider + web in corner. Outside is a grassy area where they are chainsawing down a tree and then slowly mulching it. We decide this place sucks, return to counter to check out and stay elsewhere. Refund refused. We were promised manager would call us. Never did. 1/5 would never return.

Our experience at the hotel this week was terrible 😣 The receptionist was not pleasant at all. She made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. We were put in a back block room no sun, no opening windows and no air conditioning. We asked if we could change rooms and were told it would cost us another $35!!! Shower over a bath not the easiest when you are in your 70’s. The fan in the bathroom was very noisy. Only one chair to sit on in the room. The meal in the restaurant was extremely expensive and very disappointing for what you got, the wine prices were excessive and the buffet breakfast was terrible, the food was all substandard, the bacon you could not even eat!! the scrambled eggs were pale and watery, the sausages were white like they had been microwaved. Very disappointed and would not recommend to anyone!!!!!
