We stopped off at the South Clara B&B overnight on our way down South, Mike and Lynn were very welcoming and the bird Cottage is in a wonderful location in the land of the farm. Very quite and just what we needed after a hectic couple of days in Rotorua. We were presented with fresh bread and home made jam which was lovely.

If you are looking for a bit if peace and quiet this is the place for you, if you have time you can have a walk in the lovely gardens also.

We were so lucky that bird cottage happened to be available when we arrived in Taupo and checked at the i-Site. After two weeks in B&Bs we wanted a self catering place for 2 nights and this absolutely fitted the bill.. 35kms out of touristy Taupo, a lovely little self contained one-bedroom farm cottage with kitchen, washing machine, DVD/TV, hot tub and pretty rural view. Although close to the road the traffic noise didn't bother us. Lynn & Mike are welcoming hosts and will loan you DVDs and give you fresh veg from their garden. At NZ$130 we felt it was good value for money. Just 10 mins drive away are lovely walks in the Pureora Rainforest.. we did the 45 min Rimu walk and didn't see another person. Tip: the best shop in Taupo is Scenic Cellars, NZs largest underground wine cellar, great place to sample and buy wines.

We had a wedding to attend at Whanganui Bay on the Lake Taupo shore and this was merely the nearest place that we (husband - wife) stumbled upon. We booked the Friday and Saturday nights. Luck was on our side. The property is well groomed. Actually - It would have been an excellent photo shoot spot for the wedding photos - it is that nice! There is a peaceful relaxed feel and a warm friendly atmosphere. We stayed in the Farm House Tui room. Very comfortable, cozy and so clean too. Everything is of such a high standard, including our breakfast and your hosts are very nice welcoming people. There is a selection of nice animals to meet too. You almost might not want to leave the property with all that it offers for relaxation and amenities. Easy parking. Great value place in a beautiful part of NZ. The Bird Cottage looks amazing too. We are highly impressed.

We received a great welcome from Heather (the new owner of the B&B). A beautiful house in a quiet country location. Our room and en suite were of a high standard and a comfortable lounge was available for our use. Heather is an excellent hostess and provides an excellent breakfast with local information and news, as a bonus we experienced our first earthquake tremor from the quake on the South Island! Just a great stay.

A friend and I stayed here for two nights, it was just a girls relaxing getaway & it was exactly what we wanted. Set just off the main road but feel a like you're in the forest in the middle of no where. Such great hospitality in this 100year old cottage, would really suit a romantic getaway for a couple. Fully equipped kitchen with fridge & stove. One room with queen bed & a fold out double couch. Spa Pool and plenty of seating on the wrap around deck. Highlander cattle, a dog & 4 cats greet you from the main house so if you love nature & animals this place is perfect. Only a 20 min beautiful scenic drive into taupo city centre. We will be back, thank you!!

Lynne and Mike's B&B is the most wonderful place to stay - beautiful and very relaxing. They are so hospitable and go out of their way to make your visit perfect. We thoroughly recommend South Claragh.

Bird Cottage at South Claragh sits in an idyllic spot away from everywhere, though not too far from Taupo. If you're looking for peace and quiet, a romantic weekend, a summer or winter retreat, this is it! Who needs the hustle and bustle of Taupo or Rotorua, this cozy cottage and above all, the charming owners, Lynn and Mike, will offer it to you. The cottage itself is very well maintained, with a washing machine in the large bathroom and a sheltered clothes line on the verandah. The queen-size bed, with heating pad, was very comfortable and linens were top end. Lots of space for your belongings too. We stayed 3 nights and would have gladly stayed longer, if only to try out the sheltered spa pool on the back verandah. We enjoyed sitting out on the front, covered, verandah so close to the birds in the surrounding forest.
This is a place to recharge your batteries and get in touch with nature again. We were offered blueberries from the garden as well as onions and herbs, whatever is in season. Yum! the only drawback is the lack of Internet access, though we were able to access it from the owner's deck, due to the secluded "pocket" the cottage is in. But then, who in their right mind would want access to the Internet in such a romantic place??? Only by necessity, as you have found a place to unwind here and let the birds entertain you... there was also a TV and DVDs, if you really want to keep up with the rest of the world...

Welcomed by Lynn and her 2 boys (the dogs) and later by Mike. All were lovely and extremely approachable. Accommodation was large and very comfortable, the small homely touches with the flowers etc was great. Spent the first evening together with a bottle of wine! If you want peace and tranquility then this is the place for you, we could not fault it! Been in touch since our visit and hopefully will continue to do so.

We had the pleasure of stumbling across this hidden gem of a place and liked it so much we changed our plans to stay there twice. We were travelling the country and stayed with Mike and Lynne in the B&B on our way to the South Island. We found them following a brief internet search. However we liked it so much we booked to stay in the wonderful Bird Cottage on the way back up.
Situated in 11 acres of unspoilt beauty the house is spacious, clean and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble for Mike and Lynne. They are happy for you to help around the garden and pick your own fresh herbs or while away the hours in the spa or napping in the garden. All rooms have DVD players and tea and coffee and there is an endless supply of DVD's to borrow. We even hired thier fully contained camper van for a couple of nights at a very reasonable rate.
However Bird Cottage is truely wonderful. We made full use of the TV, DVD cooker toaster and microwave etc. You cannot imagine how cosy it is when you light the log burner so that it is lovely and warm when you get out of the spa. It is spotlessly clean, tranquil with wonderful views. It is so easy to drift of too sleep to the sound of the birds whilst laying in the hammock.
With two lovely dogs and the friendly highland cattle there is always something going on.
Highly recommended for a warm friendly stay wether it be for a week or if you are just passing through.
