Detailed Reviews
We stayed a few days at DeBretts for a family gathering with a couple of motor homes, a basic cabin, a motel style unit, a studio and a superior studio. All were good and the amenities and facilities were excellent as were the grounds with lovely trees and hedges between accommodations.
Our superior studio looked basic on the outside but was nice inside and very well appointed with underfloor heating, Wifi, large TV with Sky sport and movie channels, and a small outside deck with table and chairs. The kitchenette had a microwave and two hotplates as well as fridge and dish drawer dishwasher and a coffee plunger. We technically had views of the mountains but the weather conspired against us so we had brief glimpses during our stay, but it would be lovely on a fine sunny day.
There was shower body wash and shampoo and hand-wash supplied in dispensers and they will service the room and replenish anything as needed daily.
Having the hot pools on site was great and we got a discount because we were staying there and towels provided that we could take with us. The playground and bouncy pillow were a big hit with the kids. We gathered in the camp kitchen on the first night and it was also well set up with plenty of options for different groups and a TV/lounge area.
The only thing I could fault in our room was the lack of reading lamps/lights. We only had overhead down lights which were all on or off (with a dimmer – but if you dimmed them you couldn’t see to read).
We would definitely stay again if in Taupo, it was overall very good and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Great spot with excellent facilities including pools of various temperatures. The children will be delighted with the water slide. Our unit was very comfortable although instructions on how to use the oven would have helped rather than playing trial and error.

Four of the 8 to 13 year-old nephews and I stayed for one night on the way to the snow. It's hard to find a place that can accommodate 1 adult and 4 kids but the 2-bedroom motel unit 8 was brilliant for us. The boys first glimpse of the snow was the excellent (ok, it was distant) view was from the primary bedroom. Really welcoming staff and brilliant to have the short walk to the hot pools.
There is a full size fridge, everything we needed in the kitchen for our stay, and a large enough dining table for us all. The bunk room is pretty tight, and 5 sharing a bathroom took a bit of arranging, but it was welcoming, warm, and great value for our family group. We will have to come back, we spent the evening in the pools and didn't manage time for the boys to try out the giant bouncy pillow.

I don't usually review too much however I feel that I need to put my two cents in for this one. Our stay here was not good.
So I'll start with the biggest issue I had. The combined unisex toilets/ showers. I had two occasions where I have entered the toilet facilities and there were groups of younger men loitering outside the showers playing music and acting rowdy. There behaviour and proximity to the showers made me uneasy. I have decided to walk out for safety reasons being a young female and the group of men started yelling out to me as i left the door. I feel as though in this day and age we need separate facilities for safety reasons. Especially when the hot water buttons for the showers are outside of the bathroom doors to access. This is the first time I have felt unsafe using facilities at a campsite and I have travelled to a lot of campsites around the world.
The second problem I had with this location was that we booked a powered site and returned after spending the day off the campsite. Upon returning to our campsite it was occupied by another family. I have approached the desk and the female advised that they had changed our campsite and rebooked us to an unpowered site. We received no calls/ emails advising us of this. Plus we paid for a powered site. After 2 days at the location we also identified that the power had not been turned on at our sites so we got no power in the end.
All in all. I would not stay here again. It's far from town so not within walking distance. Facilities are sub par. Safety is am issue. Plus you have to pay extra to use the pools. No thanks

Hi Eliza. Firstly, we would like to apologise for the behaviour of the young men, causing you to feel unsafe. Since the showers are each within their own little 'room', it is usually not a problem, but if people are not respectful, then we understand that you could feel uneasy. Nobody should be loitering about the toilet facilities, and if you report this happening, we would send someone to ask them to move. Regarding the site that you had booked, we do sincerely apologise if you were given the wrong site; we will certainly look into this matter. Thank you for your feedback.

We visited the hot pools at 7.30, knowing they closed at 8.30pm. We were not staying here. Pool was very cool and no fresh water coming into pool. The plug was pulled out and the pool started draining at 7.55pm! We were charged full price for cool water and low levels with water draining away! Disappointed about paying full price for draining pools and cool water without even warning us that this was the case.

My husband and I stayed overnight in a Basic Triple Room with Shared Bathroom.
We arrived at 10.30pm and I was concerned about how we were going to get to our unit, but our accomodation details was left at the reception door and we could easily find our way there.
The room was nice and comfy, although my husband felt his bed was a bit too soft. I loved the underfloor heating when I went for a shower in the communal bathroom facilities for men and women.
Overall everything was neat and tidy. Would consider going again as we couldn't stay to enjoy all the facilities they had on offer, the hot pools, BBQ area, etc.

This is the most expensive place we stayed in on our 2 weeks holiday. We expected more. The reservation team had spelt my name incorrectly and could not find my booking initially and we were disappointed the site we were given was not private, right in front of the reception and was barely enough room between motorhomes. We asked was for recommendations on fishing guides and was told there were none in Taupo and when asked for recommendations on places to eat we were directed to a folder of menus to read. The hot pools were an extra charge and were not a great experience, the lady taking payment was very sour.

We booked a cabin (with shared toilet/shower facilities). A lovely, tidy, comfortable space. Great location, nice staff.
The communal shower/toilet area is one of the best we've seen - underfloor heating, really warm, bright, and clean. We'll be back to stay again.

Stopped for one night on a powered site for a camper van and ended up staying for two. The park was nearly empty due to Covid but frankly that suited us.
Secured a great powered site with hedges and trees all around. This facility is dog friendly and the staff are terrific. The facilities are close to being the best we have used. The kitchen is spotless, and has everything. The outdoor BBQ area is also well worth using. The cost is higher than most at $26 per person per night but that does entitle you to a 50% discount on the thermal spa pools entry down behind the resort.
The grounds are really well kept and the showers and toilets are cleaned regularly, are very modern and even have piped music.
Well really do recommend staying here if you don't mind being a few kilometres from the Taupo shopping area. Well worthwhile and we would certainly stay there again !

Stayed in our camper van at the holiday park section of resort. From the moment we checked in, the staff were so friendly and helpful. Beautiful place to stay and the facilities are stunning. Showers and facilities block were spotless …..you could literally eat off the floor, it’s that clean. Taupo itself is a short uber ride away (€8), and a cycle along lake is a must. Lotus Thai for dinner outstanding too.

Hi,
Thank you for contacting us. We offer a discounted price to guests staying at Taupo DeBretts which is currently only $11 per adult so the cost will be half that of a normal ticket. We hope you have a lovely swim.
Kind regards,

The site is set back quite far from the lake actually, 3-5 minute drive. You might be lucky and get a lake view.
