Oh dear. This place is really very run down. I wasn’t going to bother writing this, but an email from the motel’s management encouraged me to write a review for TA, so here you go...
On the plus side the staff member at check in was nice and helpful and the shower worked well, and er...that’s about it for positives.
Toilet seat was broken, cupboard doors cracked, toilet paper dispenser broken and a general air of disrepair throughout. Some rather suspicious stains on the wall behind the bed. One of the kitchen cloths was a cut out section of old bath towel.
Helpfully the management had provided a list of rules which included the gem “spewing in the units will incur extra cost, its certainly the first place I’ve stayed in that has specifically warned me against “spewing”. Inexplicably the bath towels, face cloths and bath mat had signage pointing to what each item was, just in case you had never seen a towel before.
I think this place is being used as temporary accomodation for some people, and while that is a perfectly legitimate way for a motel to make some money, it changes its vibe and atmosphere and makes it far less appealing for others.
It was the last place with space In Taupo on a busy school holiday weekend - we should have kept driving, and so should you. The cost of this experience? $357 for a single night.

Personally, we would not recommend staying here and wouldn't go back. Rooms were rather unclean. In comparison to other motels/hotels you pay for what you get and this was fair given the cost and what the room was like. For us, it was all that was available in a heavily booked town at the time.

Stayed here for 2 nights, with a group of people, in a 1 bedroom unit. The Maori lady in the office was very nice and friendly, but thats where it ends. The spa was not working and the playground was old and tired. The unit it self was not very clean when we arrived, and the lights in the kitchen when on and off all the time. Bathroom doors did not close. Beds where ok but not the best as one was broken and it sunk in the middle. Also not info on the tv or stuff to do around Taupo. Plus there was no smoke alarm but the base was there. I am not fussy but this is all basic stuff that should be there.

We booked a room for 2 nights – 1 x adult, 1 x 3yr
Arriving around 7pm checked in & went straight out to dinner (not entering the room).
9pm we arrived back to the property. Our first initial response was that the room felt cold and smelt damp. The room itself looked tired & completely different to photos advertised. The hardwired heater provided did not work, another was brought to the room.
The toddler we were traveling with was bathed. It was at this stage we noticed how much mould there was & how unclean it actually was (which explained the Constance sneezing).
WE DIDN’T STAY – thankfully we managed sorted alternative accommodation and left. Staying at the Barcelona Motel was not an option.
Prior to leaving (& again the following day when we returned) a refund was asked for but refused. There was no acknowledgement on how bad the room was from the manager.
I would have been happy with 50% back (to cover the cost of any used or disturbed linen).
My advice is if you are looking at staying at this property DON’T.
Or check the room offered BEFORE you pay any $$.
Reviews online, show a large increasing amount of complaints about the cleanliness, rooms, & bad management.
Photos we have taken clearly show the amount of mould, thick dust, hair, pubic hair, masses of fly poop and bad maintained room.
This place is an unclean hovel and In my option is Substandard accommodation. This motel should certainly not be on the third party booking sites.

No one to greet us, reception was closed for 30mins until they returned from picking their kid up from school. The room was filthy, rust on the shower attachments, stains all over the floors, the shower was similar to a hospital room divider, when you shower all the water would go straight onto the floor. The bathroom was freezing as all the cold air was coming in through the gap.in the toilet window. It looked like a run down druggie pad, a terrible nightmare or scene from a movie. Mismatched curtains and missing netting, over priced, for this price I could have booked into a gorgeous hotel or apartment in Auckland central, there was condensation on windows, no insulation, it's freezing, it's paru (dirty), the room smelt like it hadn't been aired in hears, it smelt damp like old laundry left to sit in the washing machine for days, parking is a nightmare, there wasn't enough parks, there were no secure parks. Owners clearly don't care nor take responsibility for their property and the state of their motel, they drive a flash jeep with artwork designs all over it and it even had kids face on it. The owner lives on site or stores their belongings there. To blame guests and refuse refunds its disgusting.
They catfished us and many other guests. Their photos do not reflect what you get. You have to pay in advance or prior to arriving to secure your spot. Nothing like the advetisement photos. Shame on you Barcelona, shame shame shame. I wonder how they will blame us for creating condensation and mould on the windows when we stayed. SHAMEFUL. Your motel reflects your true personal hygiene as an owner. Paru paru paru Hua

The room didn’t look like it had been cleaned, there were ants on the floor, flies galore from having all the windows and doors opened however when we closed everything we realised it was to hide the lingering stench in the room, curtains barely hanging on the rail, the battery cover on the remote control was broken and had to be adjusted to make it work, broken springs on the bed. Curtains had to be left closed due to having no netting so no privacy! Windows were left closed due to the noise of other residents! The floor felt dirty and I wore shoes inside the room the whole time! We went out for the day only to return to an unserviced room! Apparently their policy is to not service rooms unless someone is there because they have been accused of taking things or they will only service the room if a note is left giving them permission to service the room while we are out? There was no notice or information book to say that was their policy and if you don’t come in to the room when no one is there then how do you know if someone has left a note? An outdated motel can still be a nice place to stay if it is CLEANED!!! Too scared to strip beds in fear of what we may find! We paid $288 a night for this . . . . what a rip off!

Taupo Barcelona Motel… Accommodation is always a problem when you don't book early during school holidays in New Zealand. It would be almost impossible to find a place for a night out with your family at the last minute. Where you find it is also at least twice the normal price. Whatever you do, please don't forget your early reservation. Unfortunately, the “Barcelona Motel” where we stayed for one night in Taupo was exactly such an experience.

Do not stay here. Incredibly overpriced for what ya a stretch could be called a 1 star motel. No staff on site, no hot water for showers, no response to calling reception. A ‘contactless’ experience no good if nothing works and no one there to fix it.

Pictures are taken at night time in the lounge, you can't see how dirty the carpet is during the day. Don't book your family here, you will regret it. Lacks in cleanliness, my family of 7 ended up with bad sneezing and 4 of the seven got bad hayfever. Our room we booked smelt like cigarette 🚬, food packets under bed and sox. Ants in the kitchen. Towels aint white anymore and they were stiff as. Noisey floor boards. Only highlight was the supermarket is nearby and The Warehouse is next door. Friendly staff who are not the owners.
