After 5 nights into our road trip it was a welcome relief to stay at The Cove - spacious, very clean, friendly staff and a great view of the lake.
We actually spent a couple of hours just chilling out in the sun soaked suite.
It’s great to see a hotel/motel still offering shampoo etc in little containers - something about the big bottles attached to the wall that most hotels do nowadays grosses me out :)
The only downfall are the steps, so beware if you have heavy luggage but there are ground floor units.
The cafe for breakfast is amazing! Excellent food, service and incredible view of the lake!

Overall our stay was pleasant . The room was a reasonable size with lake views. A bonus was the cafe on site with beautiful food and great variety . But why have a kitchenette with a small sink , crockery and cutlery and dish washing liquid supplied when dish cloths and tea towels were missing? The cost of this accomodation isn’t cheap and we would have expected a t v in the bedroom. The spa has a safety barrier which has to be negotiated and isn’t easy for older people. Showers over baths are never the best. The premises need to be moved into 2021 if it is to be classed at the top end of the market. The bed was excellent and the room was clean and tidy.

A nice welcome and helpful if needed with luggage (as this was heavy and no lift for our room) there was a small balcony, a fridge and the room was very small. There was not enough room around the beds to open both of our suitcases. However it was clean and we were only stopping for one night. The coffee place was not open while we were there for breakfast and coffee, so the husband walked up past the lake to a small coffee truck which was lovely and very friendly. The location of the Cove was approx 1.5miles out of town but a lovely walk along the lake of an evening to go in for dinner. The bathroom was compact.

Unfortunately, I would not recommend The Cove. I got what was meant to be a luxury room with a spa on the deck. Upon check-in, there was a very strong smell of food from reception right up to my room. The room was tidy. However, the bathroom was a bit dirty with mould around the taps and shower knob. The spa was lukewarm, so I did not use it. If the price point were lower, it would be ok. I came to check out at 8.15am and the office was closed. It would be great to have someone face-to-face to speak to about how the stay went. It is not worth the money they are charging.

The Cove needs an update. The bathrooms are not aging well with moldy silicone, missing paint and broken trim. While the room I stayed in was at the road end of the motel the road noise is muted and drowned out by the percussive thump of the, I presume heating machinery in between rooms 18 and 17 starting with a thump every 10 minutes or less. This noise is also drowned out by the old fridge in the room.

So we stayed at the property for 3 nights. When we arrived at the property we were given a room that was very different from the photos. The bathroom was dirty and very tired, contrary to the photos on booking.com site. When complained to the front desk ,they tried to argue with me when instructed that it was misleading photos and that i can make a complaint against them to consumer protection nz. Then they were willing to cooperate. We were given $200 off our booking and an upgrade on the last night. BUT WE had to use the disgusting toilet and bathroom for the first 2 nights. It was not good enough. This accommodation is badly in need of renovation.

My wife and I stayed here for a three night break, we booked in to the adapted spa suite - Room No. 1 with a disabled parking space right outside. The room was very spacious with a small kitchenette / lounge area and outside space with a partial view of the lake. Extremely good value for money what you get.

We have just spent a weekend in one of the superior spa rooms and had a great experience. The cafe at the lake end of the motel is great for breakfast or a coffee. The rooms are very comfortable and surprisingly dark and quiet at night!

We really enjoyed our stay at The Cove, having stayed before it was an easy choice to stay again whilst in Taupo. The rooms are large and comfortable and the simple kitchenette great for lunch and breakfast meals. The bed is very comfortable, the bathroom very cleanm, and the hot tub is an indulgence!
