My wife and I have concluded a three-week vacation throughout New Zealand. As we look back on the many places we stayed on this upscale trip we regarded the Lake Taupo Lodge as one of the top two we experienced in this country. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the proprietor. Gary could not have been warmer in his desire to offer us the best of hospitality. I am in a hospitality business myself and know it when I see it. He and his chef assistant helped us with our baggage, oriented us to our suite and the lodge itself and made dinner reservations for us throughout our stay. Everyone in town from cab drivers to restaurant owners seem to know Gary. His help in arranging cabs, restaurant reservation, etc. was invaluable. The breakfasts in the morning were well executed and delicious. One of the things that impressed me most were the elaborate gardens on the property. My wife and I found them especially delightful to explore each morning after breakfast. I was amazed to find such a well-maintained and beautifully designed garden that exhibited so many beautiful plantings. It made me wonder how many man-hours are devoted each week to tending such a massive garden. This experience of hospitality definitely merits an excellent rating.

We booked this lodge located in Acacia Bay just outside of Taupo for a couple of nights to explore the Taupo region.
We had a large room, almost like a small suite, and were overlooking the lake. The room was clean, the bed comfortable and it was possible to have the windows open and sit outside
At night, we could see the milky way, the southern cross asf with our bare eyes - a wonderful experience.
Staff was helpful and the breakfast very good.
The thing to get used to is an informal check-in, that after breakfast you already have to advise staff what you want for breakfast the following day, the parking space is limited and with that, a challenge to maneuver around your car, especially given that most guests arrive with large SUVs or small trucks..

We spent two wonderful, relaxing days at Lake Taupo Lodge at the end of December 2021. Having visited Taupo numerous times over the years this visit was the antithesis of the standard lake front hotel accommodation in the best possible way.
Located in Acacia Bay, a short drive from the town centre, we had direct views of lake and beautiful gardens from our bedroom and balcony. The rooms are nicely appointed with the overall scheme taking cues from Frank Lloyd Wright.
The breakfast and canapes were 5 star - fresh and delicious. No request was too much or too hard for the chef who was so obliging.
Attention to detail - (fresh towels, flowers and chocolates on pillows), music at breakfast and canape / cocktail hour completed the charm of the experience.
Our stay was made all the more special by the hosts, Gary and Shirley who were welcoming, informative and so hospitable. Thank you very much for such a memorable end to our year.

For our 65th bday, my husband and I traveled to New Zealand and visited the North Island our second week, first staying at the Lake Taupo Lodge. A throwback to Frank Lloyd Wright design, this unique property offered us a very comfortable stay (we stayed in the Frank room) and some of our best breakfasts on our entire trip. We loved the location, found it easy to get to town for dinners out (great suggestions from our host) and the room was spacious enough for two, comfy bed and pillows and a nice size bathroom with shower and tub. Thank you Gary and Chef for a lovely stay.

Lake Taupo Lodge is a great place to stay. Gary and his team have a very clear mission. They want anyone who stays there to feel they have had a special experience. They most certainly did that for us.
We were made to feel so welcome. Touches such as the evening canapés, booking restaurants for us and the brilliant superb quality breakfasts makes Lake Taupo Lodge stand out as a place to stay. Add that to the spacious, luxurious comfort of the suites along with the stunning location and views, means that anyone staying here is in for a wonderful time.
We cannot recommend Lake Taupo Lodge highly enough. Long may it prosper.

We were fortunate to enjoy 3 nights at this amazing lodge as part of our travels through NZ. The setting is incredible with fantastic views of the lake and our suite was spacious and very comfortable. The cooked-to-order breakfasts, delicious canapés and wine in the evening, and incredibly gracious hosts made this a memorable stay. Gary made sure that we had reservations for dinner each night at the best restaurants in town. The lodge is an architectural delight and the gardens are not to be missed. Everything about our stay was perfect from the moment we arrived until we left. We used Lake Taupō Lodge as a base to explore the area and looked forward to returning each afternoon. Our stay at the lodge was a highlight of our trip.

This is another exceptional NZ boutique accommodation experience. The Lodge is about 10 minutes out of Taupo in Acacia Bay and offers wonderful views of the lake. It’s like a home away from home with beautifully appointed lounge and dining spaces each offering lovely views of the magnificent gardens and/or the lake. The room we stayed in was perfect, offering a wonderful view of the lake and the garden. It was spacious, well appointed and private with its own sunny balcony. Garry, our host and his wife Shirley are terrific hosts and made us feel very welcome. A glass of wine with superb canapés at around 6pm in the lounge each evening was a highlight and an opportunity to get Garry’s tips for the next day’s exploring or to hear about his remarkable business career. Stefan, the chef, is a master - his breakfast offerings are first class as are his canapés each evening. Sadly, they do not offer an in-house dinner service but Garry has suggestions to satisfy most tastes from amongst the many eateries around Taupo. We couldn’t recommend this place more highly.

Our experience at Lake Taupo Lodge was absolutely fantastic! The team has created a wonderful amalgamation of luxury and homeliness. Just one call out, not a negative but something to be aware of, note this is less like a formal hotel and more of a lodge / bed & breakfast. The service was impeccable, with a breakfast catered to our dietary restrictions, our room remade multiple times a day, and lovely advice and chatter in between. The bathrooms are spacious and modern, with beautiful views. The rooms, while slightly older, are super comfortable and spacious. I didn’t want to leave - I felt right at home and so calm with the stunning setting of the lodge.

We spent 3 very relaxing nights at Lake Taupo Lodge as part of a 35 day drive tour through North and South Island. We had some very inclement weather on the way down from Auckland but Gary and Shirley made sure we were very warmly welcomed on arrival and set up in our room. I’ve often heard the expression ‘Couldn’t have done enough for us’ but this was definitely the case here, with all of the small details of our accommodation explained and arrangements for dinner and transport swiftly and efficiently organised. Rooms were beautiful and well appointed with stunning views over Lake Taupo and the beautiful gardens. The breakfasts were super with a chef on hand to create a range of mouth watering options. Evening canapes and pre-dinner drinks were also super.
Thanks to Gary and Shirley for making our stay so enjoyable. We will certainly come back on our next NZ break.

The description on the Lodge's web page describes accurately this wonderful Lodge. In addition to the extremely comfortable room with beautiful view over the extensive and inviting private garden towards the Lake and mountains beyond, the stunning architecture and interior decor, and the delightful cooked breakfast can be added the wonderful hosts Gary and Shirley. They made us feel very welcome, and we looked forward each evening to drinks and canapes with them and the other guests. They were extremely helpful and went out of there way to accommodate our various requests. We highly recommend Lake Taupo Lodge as a special destination in this wonderful part of New Zealand.
