The hosts were wonderful, and the location was close to everything great that Taupo has to offer.
And heres the huge but, there were drug deals being done on site with our neighbour (possible emergency accommodation) being the dealer. Even had a “customer” knock at our door late at night. Told the owners and they acted like it was noted but also got the idea they already knew about it.
The workers that lived on site would drink heavily of an evening and mornings they would start their day by stinking out the court yard with them smell of weed. When we sat in communal areas they would then share their horror stories of owners being racist to them and talk of “ dont know how you could be with someone like that” in regards to a mix relations couple. Being a mixed culture family on vacation we found this extremely uncomfortable.
Rather than the relaxing weekend getaway we hoped for we walked into something that did not resemble this. We ended up checking out early. We will not return
Was told after we were shown the room that the hot water only lasted 7 minutes & 30 seconds! Between 3 of us I thought that was not good enough, & would have liked to have been told that before I signed in.
Room was very basic, kitchen had a cheap portable element as there was no oven. Kitchen cabinets were musty & not very hygenic. Kitchen utensils including the glassware & crockery were dirty & needed to be washed before use. (Using up some of our 7 minute hot water allocation!)
There was mould alongside the toilet, the towels provided looked & smelt unclean & the room had an odd smell like it had'nt been aired properly for a long time. Decor was also very dated.
Motel promotes that all rooms have free WiFi & Sky TV. We could'nt access either. There wasn't even a Sky remote provided. Paid $95.00 for the room. Definately is not worth that price! More like a basic backpackers than a motel. Very dire!
But the night of our stay tops all of the above! settling in for the night lying on the beds for about 30 mins we all started scratching relentlessy!
We were in extreme discomfort & we found we were covered in bitemarks of some sort. The bites were inflamed & extremely itchy. My 10 year old was covered all over his tummy & chest & very distressed.
I contacted the office @ 10.30pm fnally getting thru on my second attempt. The female motelier was in disbelief after I told her that we were being bitten & asked what I wanted to do about it instead of offering me a solution!
She sent her husband to the room where he also accused me of over reacting & implying that I was making it up! It wasn't just coincidence that all 3 of us were suffering from the same bitemarks at the same time!
He came into the room 'ripped' off his jacket like he was ready to have a fight then proceeded to haul the mattresses up aggressively & 'rip' the bedding off inspecting them! All the while he kept insisting that he 'knew exactly what he was looking for' making me think he had had experiences with a bedbug or flea infestation before!
My children & I felt extremely intimidated by his behaviour as he was becoming increasingly aggravated.
He was acting quite out of control & I seriously considered calling the police. He argued that no one had ever complained before & implied that I was trying to scam him! I told him that I would'nt be getting my kids out of bed at that hour of the night to make a fuss for no reason!
After arguing back & forth we were finally put into another room across the car park. Without any offer of assistance my children & I hurriedly packed up & struggled to carry our things to the other room in the dark, all the while he continued to argue with me!
It was now after 11pm. My children were tired & distressed & I was absolutely furious!
He never once apologised for the inconvenience & distress caused, in fact he was more concerned how he was feeling!
The new room offered although slightly bigger, was just as dated & unclean as the previous one. Even had rust in the fridge. A sure health hazard!
Needless to say at the first sign of light we left.
I have emailed MANZ to lay a complaint but am still waiting for them to act. I am also considering contacting the Mayor of Taupo & letting him know of our horrific experience in his town.
Please anyone that is considering staying here,DON'T!! You would have a better stay on the side of the road! Safer, cleaner & cheaper!
I paid $95.00 to be bitten, abused & intimidated. Don't make the same mistake!!!
When we arrived, we were greeted by moldy sheets, and a door that had holes in the base. It was almost as if a rodent had chewed the bottom end of the door in a vein attempt to gain unlawful entry to the premise. However, no rodent could be seen, probably because the accommodation wasn't even up to rat standards!
The issues were numerous, to name but a few:
1) The door was chewed and drafty
2) The room had stains on the walls, carpets and sheets
3) The mattress' were so thin that you could feel every single METAL slat underneath
4) The bunk bed had the ladder removed so the occupant of the top bunk couldn't mount their area of retreat without slicing their thighs open on the frigged metal frame
5) The room only had one ceiling light that had such a harsh colour that you felt blinded every single time you switched it on (which, by the way, could only be achieved by the occupant of the top bunk with a prehistoric drawstring)
6) The slatted window wouldn't close properly, so dew and rain got into the room
7) The top part of the television had melted, presumably from some form of electrical failure
8) The room fan only blew scorching hot air
9) The bunk bed was propped up by stray slats of wood (probably fished out of some lake)
10) And finally, the room only had one electrical socket. Meaning you could either watch television, or heat the room with the fan... Not both.
After we found ourselves in this dyer circumstance, we decided to retreat to the communal kitchen, in a woefully naive attempt to regain any lost dignity from our poor excuse for a room.
In this communal kitchen, we found various types of dirt (i.e. hair, mud, dirty water) most of which was located on the communal crockery; which by the way looked as though it had been salvaged from an elderly deceased person's home auction.
With this longing sense of discontent, we posted onto Facebook our feelings of said accommodation, expressing ourselves through the medium of comedy. Needless to say, when this post was discovered by the owner, he was not best pleased. We woke up the following day to a loud banging at the rodent mutilated door. A member of our party answered the door with anticipation.
"If you don't like the room you can have a refund, it's not a prison you know!"
Sounds like a generous offer when read in a review window. However, reality dictated otherwise. This was quite simply one of the most hostile, unprofessional, and downright obnoxious altercations any of us had encountered. He later returned comment on our Facebook post expressing his disgust with our review. He was clearly not a happy chappy! In light of this extraordinary turn of events, we took to TripAdvisor to see what others felt of the location... needless to say we weren't let down.
It was shower time, and we made the brave hike across the site (hoping for no awkward altercations with the manic owner) only to discover a series of decrepit, neglected and frankly filthy wash units.
"These bathrooms are washed daily", said a poster that had clearly been written with 1995 WordArt. Clearly this was a misprint, because for the following FOUR DAYS a beer bottle sat obnoxiously on the moldy shower shelf.
This had become a nightmare, and we were already planning our escape.
All I can say is, do not go here, the cheap price tag just isn't worth it. If you are foolish enough to frequent such an establishment, do not post your feeling of the accommodation on your own personal Facebook account... Because you will be hunted down and told where to go!
