We booked two double deluxe rooms which were anything but. The room had a small kitchenette that was dirty, had only odds and sods cutlery, crockery. No mugs, glasses or kettle, expired uht milk. The shared bathroom was with a budget room next door so not with our two teenage girls who had to share a bathroom with other guests. The bathroom connects to the room next door and their bathroom door did not lock!! The bathrooms were disgusting, asked to get them cleaned and was told they were clean enough! No towels or teas provided, no duvet on the bed only a sheet and duvet cover. Aweful service, really didn't seem to care and made you feel like you were putting them out. Better off staying at a back packers, would get better service and cleaner facilities.

Arriving at 10am I was told I could not book in until 2pm, this is even when I had booked online, found this most unhelpful as we were going to a concert, after the concert we were not the only ones trying to check in, the receptionist needs to learn a few skills in dealing with the public.
As for our room, first thing noticed was the cobwebs, second was the floor was unswept with debris still under our beds from last year looking at the dust, the shower was pathetic as it would go from hot to cold and not stay at a constant temperature. Linen towels had holes in them, and lastly being a smoker I noticed the signs that said to smoke outside and to put the butts in the appropriate containers, what containers, there were none and the outside was littered with butts, overall experience was negative and I would probably not stay there again.

I am not fussy and never complain but this is the worst place I have stayed by a mile, tiny room ,tv didn't work, jug and microwave didn't work and shared bathroom and one little window for ventilation and in summer it was so hot, I left at 2 in the morning and slept in my car down by the lake.
I would advise anyone never to book here.

Having travelled for the last 2.5 years and recently settling in Auckland, we've stayed in a lot of budget accommodation. We expect a basic, clean and no-frills place to rest our heads. We didn't come here with high expectations.

But this place was beyond grim.

As you walk to the reception the whole fire alarm system board is flashing with major errors. A promising start.

The reception stinks - absolutely revolting smell and generally dingy all-round. An incence stick is being burned which is overwhelming and wafts all through the building in an effort to cover up a bad smell.

The gentleman behind the desk hadn't opened up the shutters (despite it being 3pm) and told me to wait while he finished what he was doing. I paid, got the keys and was given a reluctant tour to my room. I get this guy is probably a backpacker just doing a job, but a little friendliness or warmth wouldn't go amiss.

The room is small, basic and had an odd odour. I'm not after much but this room is just grim. Doesn't look anything like the photos. Carpet is filthy, cables are trailed up the wall and everything is just dirty. There's one sad cup and a set of dirty cutlery in the cabinet which would work better as a wardrobe.

The shared bathroom was rank - wasn't cleaned for the duration of the stay. Hairs and dirt everywhere and we had no toilet roll at all. I had to go to reception to get some which was made out to be an arduous task by the guy manning the desk. The bathroom stinks of a toilet bowl 'scent' - which appears to be this motels substitute for actually cleaning it.

There was no hot water at all in the evening and it took about 4 minutes for lukewarm water to come through in the shower in the morning.

The walls are paper thin - could hear word for word what the people next door to us where saying and all night you could hear people walking up and down the corridor.

Not a particularly peaceful nights sleep.

In the morning we had knocking on the door at 9:30am telling us it was check out time, and we had to explain we still had another nights stay booked. No need for this at all if the guy had looked at the bookings before doing his rounds.

We've stayed in plenty of budget and backpacker accommodation and this by far was the worst. At the bare minimum it should be clean, even if the rooms and amenities are basic and rough around the edges.

Would not recommend and would not use again. There is nicer accommodation in Taupo for similar prices.

A budget hotel? Yes. Did I expect the Hilton? No. But I did expect a little bit more for $120 a night.

The gentlemen on reception was having a very unfortunate day by the looks of it. "Leak in two rooms meaning no hot water with a plumber on the way".

Understandable but when the issue was supposedly fixed I then did not expect to be told on day two of our stay that we had no hot water and had to get three people showered in 15 minutes. Leaves me to think the owners just don't like leaving the hot water on.

The hotel has got some good benefits; nice big tv's, beds are comfy, free wifi and free parking so no complaints there.

Negatives though mount up, the state of the reception is far from inviting; floor is dirty, the sofa should just be removed and it's a dark and dingy area with a bad, bad odour. the BBQ is a rust bucket so not usable, the spa is in the laundry room and therefore not overly inviting let alone relaxing.

The kitchen stinks of curry and other spicy food as well as fish which is clearly signed to not be cooked or receive a $200 fine.

The accommodation wasn't secured at night despite all the doors saying it would be locked at 8:30pm, fridge in the room is tiny and when a bottle of water is put on the shelf the door doesn't close.

The room has no storage facility; no where to hang up your nice shirt you want to wear for your evening meal, can't unpack your luggage and there are no draws let alone a wardrobe.

Overall the stay wasn't catastrophic however being timed on the hot water supply leaves a sour taste as that is a basic expectation when staying in a motel.

Would I stay again? No; this isn't the cheapest hotel in Taupo having stayed in a quality Irish backpackers with better facilities for $54 a night.

Where to start with this shambles of an establishment. It hurt me to even give it 1 star. Firstly upon arrival we walk into an absolutely filthy reception area, what an introduction to your stay (see photos). Next we walk into the room (to which the door was strangely open) and wow. I've never stayed in such a shoddy room. As you can see from the photos, the walls were filled in at certain points with no effort to cover it up, the sheets may well have been 'clean' but they were stained and some new sheets definitely needed to be invested in. The kitchen looks nothing like the photos and looks like it has had no investment since pre-millennia. And then we come to the hot water.
On arrival we were informed that there was a leak and there was no hot water currently. Over the course of our stay it went on and off depending on the leak (a plumber was called on day one but clearly didn't fix it). It ended up in an odd situation where people were standing in the reception in towels waiting for someone to be on reception to ask for the water to be turned on.
The other reviews of this hotel are bang on; it's disgusting, dated, broken and by far the worst accommodation i've stayed in. No doubt the owner will reply arrogantly to my review like he has the rest telling me what do i expect for my money and i should go 5 star next time - for any money in an accommodation, if the owner is proud of his business, i expect a basic level of cleanliness and functionality.
My friend who booked the hotel got $100 refund off Hotels.com as an apology and they said they had tried to contact the owner to investigate, it was briefly taken off the site after he complained.
Pros - Big TV (they seem to spend more on their TV's than cleaning the place). Free Wi Fi. Free Parking.
Cons - everything else.
Bottom line - this place needs to be shut down. Scandalous.

So don't be fooled by the photos on the website because I can tell you they are too very different things, the room we had was absolutely disgusting the pillows were stained and wrinkled the sheets also had stains on them too.
There was writing on the floor in the bathroom a lot of mould around the shower, there were no tea cups one glass 4 plates one which is cracked the utensils were dirty, now I have stayed in back packer places cleaner than this.
And yes I know its not a 5 star hotel was not expecting it to be but when you advertise clean facilities and its completely the opposite, its called false advertising we also only had 2 towels both were damp, when I went back to reception to ask for some new towel's he was too busy on the phone to his friend, when after 10mins he actually got off the phone he tried to argue with me that the towels were not damp, he said then I could get some towels down the hall no offer to bring me any, honestly this place has no customer service or hygiene standards at all its a hovel shouldn't be $89.00 a night should be $25.00 dollars i have stayed in several establishments at this price with way better standards trust me people don't go there ever!!!

This motel was advertised as a cheap friendly motel, ideal for a stop over!!Wrong it seemed more like a halfway house or boarding facility with shared bathroom between rooms and more room in a shoebox!!! Not to mention the shared kitchen that was totally filthy. I booked via trivago and I will not make that mistake twice.!!

hi , Utopian Motel is budget motel , its not a 5 or 7 star hotels hotel or motel . We hope, next time you should booked in 5 or 7 star hotels because its cheap place for budget customer with privacy - $ 54 for shared bathroom with two room , $89 for with separate kitchen or En-suit we think you have paid for 2 adults for separate room either you have paid $54 or $89 or may be less with Free internet, free parking ,Fridge, Microwave , hot water kettle, coffee , tea which was available in your room. thanks for your " Crap" response.

Uncomfortably hot room with soft beds. Wifi abysmally slow, unusable. Kitchen filthy despite arriving right at check in time. Generally very depressing place and we were not given the ability to cancel further nights.

Great price, we paid $50/night for a budget twin, but it definitely was a bad choice. Boiler, fridge, toaster, tv etc matters little when the room is too cramped and hot to enjoy in the first place. Best to stay away!

This is the worst accommodation I've ever stayed in. Dirty and smelly room, we had no sheets and when we asked for them at reception we were told there were none. We saw some under the stairs and stole them, we also had no towels. The service is also really poor and unfriendly. Would never recommend it to anyone, please go somewhere else. The walls are incredibly thin and you can hear everything..
