Detailed Reviews
While we read the reviews after booking and seen some not very good ones, I will say this was perfect for what we needed, being out of town and by the river it was great for the kids to run off some energy and not bother other guests. Great to see the upgrades to the bathrooms but it definitely needs a good deep clean and a splash of paint. Your photos online by no means at all look like it does in person. If they took the time to clean the place up and give it some TLC definitely more people would stay. Please through fox the potholes, we have to replace a tyre on our vehicle due to not seeing a pothole at night.

The initial thought when we pulled up was that this was a scene from a 1940's western movie and that a tumbleweed was about to roll past our vehicle. Everything was run down and unkempt, which is an absolute shame because it could be a lovely place. The running joke of the weekend was making fun of it's name... as there was nothing Grand about this place at all. The photos must have been taken many moons ago because they are not a true representation of this place, at all!! There were holes in the wall filled in with tissue, the private spa is on a back verandah that feels as though it will collapse with the weight of one human, there are no utensils, the bbq area that was offered was ages away from our room and it was FILTHY (when my hubby asked if they could clean it, the man handed him a smelly, wet tea towel), there was no service of the room offered between our two night stay... the beds/pillows were comfy enough that we decided to stay for our two nights as we had travelled up for an event, but would 1000% not recommend this place to anyone!!

We booked in to stay for 2 nights but only stayed the one due to the events of the night before.
You cant pick who stays next to you right but some people have no concern for others around them even in a hotel/motel type setting. Our neighbours had like 8 people outside on the deck and were drinking, being loud and singing kumbayah on the deck outside until 2am in the morning until we asked them to stop. They then went inside and played their tv so loud I could hear everything on it. No sleep that night.
The room itself was small, had no lighting from the sun, you can see right into it and was poorly finished. The bathroom door had like a front door knob on it with no lock.
The only thing good thing about it was the staff, they were friendly and talkative so props to you guys on that side.
If it was done up nicely it would actually be a lovely location to stay in, it just needs a bit of love.

In my opinion I do not recommend this as a place to stay even as a last resort. Unfortunately for myself and my family we were subjected to two different nights at this ghost town.
Upon coming down the driveway the place looks as though it has been abandoned and unkept. I recommend watching the movie ‘get out’ if you want a taster of what it’s even remotely like to stay here.
The reception area and external state of the restaurant is covered in cobwebs and mould which complement the boarded up windows as you step into a large space with an unmanned desk and ripped up flooring. Don’t even get me started on “Joshua’s Restaurant”. There was no Joshua in site.
The so called “superior chalets” need to be demolished. The stains on the two seater couch that was meant to fit the four of us were foul.
Upon further inspection of the place there were holes in the carpet, missing door knobs replaced by drawer handles that were attached to the patio door via strapping tape, Stairs that are quite literally about to crack under even the lightest of feet with pieces of the grudges hair hanging from every single step, mould for millennia, and a shower where you can get a close up view of a science experiment that is a mixture of dirt, head hair, pubes and most likely rodent and insect droppings. The window in the door to the spa bath had a large crack and was held together with sellotape.
The place is definitely not well equipped and I would 10/10 recommend buying your own toilet paper because what you are supplied with is so thin. I also recommend sleeping with your mouth closed as you are likely to consume the insects that are permanent residents in the loft of Chalet 9.
The beds do not even have duvet covers, instead the duvet inners (that were once white but are now a dirty brown) are slapped in-between two sheets like a crappy cheeseburger and look like they have been passed down thousands of generations sans pee/blood stains.
Forget about getting a good nights sleep. The walls of each Chalet are paper thin and probably without insulation. The neighbours next door to us made sure that we could hear their yakking until 2am in the morning not giving a rats backside that there were other families around trying to enjoy their well deserved holiday.
If you are wanting the total horror movie experience you can even venture around the derelict building sitting in the centre of the property that is (used?) as a wash house. This is by far the worst place to stay in Taupo.
If you are horror fanatics then by all means this is the place to stay. The vibe of this place is very negative and eery. However, if you are wanting to avoid a plague like environment then give this (not resort) a miss by all means.
So sad to envision the potential this place could have if only it had owners who actually cared about it and the rich history it likely has.
Consider this your heads up to not stay at this hole until the day new owners take over and renovate this land to a state that is habitable and respectful.

We were booked at The Grandeur via an online site for 2 nights for 4 of us. I rung the night before we left to confirm we would be arriving the following day, everything was all sorted and they were expecting us even though they hadn't replied to my email asking for confirmation.
The following day (4 hrs into a 6 hr driv)e I get a message to say booking has been cancelled ???? I rung to question and was told even though I selected to pay on arrival they had a direct booking so had given them our room. I advised we were nearly in Taupo and was told we'll sorry you should have the money and pay up front, I explained I did have the money and he could just debit my card, I was given the option on booking to pay on arrival which worked well for us and had never been a problem with any of our previous extensive NZ travelling. He said not my problem and hung up. We then had to park up for an hour to try and arrange accomodation for 4 of us when the whole town was literally booked out apart from the high end hotels. We did manage to find 2 available units but at double the price as had to book 2 units instead of a 2 bedroom. My husband could hear him yelling down the phone at me and being so rude especially when I said I would be sure to warn others of his unprofessionalism.
Thankfully we didn't stay there if that's his attitude where a direct booking worth more money involves canceling a traveller's plans on the day as to not have to pay the booking company a commission definately not customer focused. To insult a customer by saying maybe you should have some money is so rude and arrogant as that wasn't an issue. I have since been told the place is disgustingly dirty, mouldy and we had a lucky escape. Be warned do not deal with this guy you could end up sleeping in your car if he gets a better offer for your already booked room.

We have stayed there several times in the past, and we have always been happy.
We went there because we have always enjoyed unlimited access to their steaming hot thermal spa from 9am till 9.30pm.
On previous visits the pump was running round the clock, ensuring the pool stayed hot.
This time we drove there late on a Friday with the intension of having a nice, soothing soak in the thermal spa before bed, several soaks on the Saturday, and a final pre-departure soak on the Sunday.
We were sorely disappointed to find that the thermal spa was little more than 75% full, the water was barely lukewarm, and the pump was off.
Next morning we were told that they drain the pool every morning, refill it and then turn the pump off, so if we were lucky we might get to sit in a semi-warm pool in the afternoon.
When we voiced our extreme disappointment we were told that if we checked out immediately they would refund our second night's accommodation.
We accepted that because we just wanted to get away from there, before one of us lost it completely, but we should have had a FULL refund, because we would not have been there if it weren't for their FALSE ADVERTISING.
There might be a good reason for the way they operate the spa nowadays, but it should be mentioned on their website, facebook page, etc. as well as in their confirmation emails, so that others don't waste their time and money on a service that they won't get.

The resort is tucked away at the end of Spa Rd, which offers a unique blend of feeling like you've taken a step back in time, deep in the remote reaches of the NZ countryside, whilst still being fairly close to the activities that Taupo offers. I really liked the charm and character that the area afforded. The kids enjoyed using the play equipment and swimming in the pool. We also ventured along the walk towards the Spa Park Hot Pools for a time, which follows the Otumuheke creek. We didn't get a chance to use the hot pool on the premises as it was out of use. It would be fantastic to see that rustic feature of the resort in use at some point.
We stayed in a two-bedroom chalet, which was clean and contained the things we needed for our stay. We were pleasantly surprised to find things like dishwashing liquid present, as you don't always carry those things around with you when travelling. The room was comfortable and looked as though it had been renovated within the last year. The kids very much enjoyed being able to watch Netflix through the evening. Through the day they liked lying in the loft area with the TV on and the curtains pulled back so they could soak in the natural features of the area.
The restaurant wasn't operating when we stayed, as they hadn't found a chef to replace the one that had resigned the week prior. That general space which was quite big, could possibly benefit from a pool table or table tennis table to give it more of an inviting function.
The person on reception was helpful and told us that we could contact him 24/7 if we required help with anything. Luckily our stay was so pleasant that we didn't need any additional help with any aspect of our visit.
Whilst the outward appearance of some aspects of Grandeur Thermal Spa Resort may not be the most modern, that is wherein that the resorts charm lies. It's like a visual history lesson of the area, which you get to be part of for a time. We throughly enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay again if ever we ventured these ways again.

Read some of the reviews here before booked. Didn't know what to expect but pleasantly surprised. It was good budget accommodation that accepts dogs, located just outside Taupo. Sure, it is an odd site and seen better days, but our accommodation was clean, warm and we had good in room facilities. The mgr, Prince was very friendly and happy to assist any request we had. 3.5 to 4 star review.

Struggled to find availability of sensibly priced accommodation in Taupo, then chanced upon this place at NZ$130, so just booked it. Just prior to arrival, looked at reviews and was worried! Admittedly upon arrival, it gives the impression of a derelict film set from an old Hammer House of Horror movie. However, once we entered our lodge, it was awesome. Bathroom looked brand new with lovely power shower. Double bed had crisp bed linen and was super comfy. Upper mezzanine level had two comfortable single beds. Kitchenette was like new and well kitted out. Lounge area included TV with free Netflix! What's not to like for $130.
The only potential concern was that at about 5am awoken by the sound of I think birds nesting in the roof space but possibly worse - maybe mice/rats scurrying around but can't say for sure as never caught sight of anything!?

Quirky, basic accommodation set on large grounds, only a short walk from Otumuheke hot stream and Waikato River where you can swim, or walk/bike to Huka Falls or the lake.
The grounds and buildings are not well maintained but lovely to walk around and enjoy the history and environment. The room was totally adequate with clean sheets and towels, well-made double and single beds, TV, jug and fridge and bathroom. Took our dog and did some lovely walks in the area.
The price is cheaper than most so anyone expecting luxury will be disappointed. It is good value for money. Served us well - would stay again.
