We stayed for a night and had a good time there. The bed was very comfortable and the room had an equipped with a kitchenette. Staff were really friendly and we could use the private pool at an arranged time for 1 hour (you pay extra for that).

Stayed here for 2 nights this week. For the price we paid ( 175.00 a night ) we thought it was just average. Badly ripped lazy boy chair in the room made it look shabby. Remote for tv didnt work either . Beds were comfortable and good shower pressure is about all we have to say was good about this place. Rooms and carpet need upgrading . There are far more superior places to stay in Taupo for less money . Were also told we could lock up our bikes but on arrival were told to lock them up to pole outside the unit . Wont be staying here again !

It might have been because we were just a couple wanting to stay a single night, but despite having booked in advance we were given what appeared to be the pokiest unit in the whole place. It was in a corner that got no sunlight, right next to a passageway frequented by noisy guests, an outside light on all night and it had a nasty smell. Even worse, the glasses and cups had lipstick smears on them. The facilities were the most basic and no way was it worth $100 a night!

Allocated Rm12 (alias the dungeon). Room didn’t live up to expectations from website photos. Tiny room round rear of complex facing rear car park.
Miss matched old dilapidated outdoor chairs. Paint in need of some TLC on inside.. Ancient microwave timer dodgy.. Only 1 plug for our super small kitchenette so had to juggle toaster, jug and microwave. On 2nd day, staff didn’t replace milk, biscuits or dishwashing liquid ... or dishcloth (that must have been oversight?).. so couldn’t wash up dishes. Room was mostly clean (under beds was another story)😮.. Linen was immaculate.
Best part about this motel was close to the cycle trail.. Receptionist was lovely and helpful too.
Sorry I don’t have more good things to say..

The place obviously was built in the 70s, and had not received any upgrades or maintenance since the day it was built. The room we were in certainly required a lot of TLC. The place was full, I think we got the last room, the whole town was full, so we were lucky to get somewhere. Was clean and tidy, just old and worn, a revamp is well overdue.

We stayed one night, the receptionist was lovely very helpful showed us how to use the pool. The units are clean and tidy and have everything you need. Sorry but the lazy boy chair does need to go. Beds were comfortable, sheets nice and crisp. Nice and warm good heating. The views are lovely of the lake and the outside furniture is good.

If your type of holiday includes been told what you can and cannot do and what you can and cannot afford, how to complete a form accurately and constantly spied on I would suggest you stay at this motel. That is just some of the points. The other main point being this motel does not equal value for money, it is totally dated and not particularly clean, but still charging a fairly hefty price tag.

Both the manager and the owner whom we dealt with were pedantic, rude and showed no genuine kiwi hospitality at all, to adults and children. Why accept a booking when you know you are accepting a booking for a large group that all have children ... when clearly children are not really your thing, come to think of it, neither are adults it appears! I think these guys may be in the wrong industry! Won't go into all the details but I think you can judge by this review the type of motel this is and how it is run...we suggest you stay elsewhere!

Response from Chelmswood M, Owner at Chelmswood Motel Taupo
Responded 2 Oct 2016
Dear RTALK. You are correct, we will not take another booking from your Club again. We do have an expectation that children, 12 year olds, will be behaved and have parental supervision. Particularly when in our heated pool and running around the complex, where there are 20 other rooms of guests who are not here to suffer uncontrolled and totally unsupervised children. Parents who take children to tournaments should remember its about the kids, not about Alcohol consumption and abusing staff who are trying to prevent your kids from injuries from performing stupid acts around the pool and complex. Your group made a great local impact when featured on a local Taupo News Facebook page, in club colours, all throwing rocks a swans on lake edge with parents looking on. We do regret having to tell Club Sports teams organisers, and parents what they can and cannot do in our home/complex because we know, as proven again in this instance, we are totally ignored, Of course we are the ones at fault. In contrast to club teams, school sports teams arrive with supervisors and team helpers, are polite respectful and behave impeccably and use the complex facilities to the fullest extent without the need of any intervention of any of our staff. We are a family complex with many features that are not available at other providers and we are proud of our facilities and endeavour to provide great service and a great guest experience, but we have a zero tolerance to bad behaviour or anything that disturbs the comfort of other guests. I coached both Cricket and football when my Children were at primary and intermediate school and when we travelled as a team to tournaments we had a simply rule for all parents, no alcohol, amazing how much more interaction the was between children and adults there was in those days compared to today.
