Wonderful 2 days staying at Hosking House. We had such a relaxing time and the breakfasts were amazing. The room was large and light with a lovely ensuite and bath. Thanks so much for being such great hosts.

Property's Favourite Review
A lovely B&B. The house is a beautifully restored late Victorian building. There are three rooms/suites on the main floor at street level, while the owners live downstairs where the land drops away steeply. The two larger suites would be excellent for a long stay. Attention to detail is much better than most B&Bs and it has a luxury hotel vibe. The rooms are named after Taranaki, New York and London, referring to the fact that the owners are from New York and New Plymouth respectively, and met in London. It has a very good balance between B&B services and complete privacy. In fact, you can have it both ways: as a single room/suite booking you get privacy, but if you wanted to book the whole place for a group of six people or so it would fabulous. The owner, Rachel was very helpful with restaurant and sights advice. Breakfast can be served in the bedroom or in the small breakfast room which is beautifully sunny and overlooks the owner’s private garden. The breakfast was extraordinarily good (continental with a hot dish of fresh fritters, poached eggs, frittata, bacon etc.) varying by day. Very good muesli too. There is also a sitting room at the front. It pays to book direct, which is better value than through the big sites. It is very good value. The location is very good, on rising ground halfway up the hill beside Pukekura Park, but only a short walk to the groovy end of town. New Plymouth and its district has amazing publicly-owned gardens, which are not the ordinary municipal gardens you might expect. Pukekura Park is a vast garden rising up a valley, with many interesting features, including Art Deco gates at the bottom opening onto a sports stadium with high earthen banks like something from a fantasy movie. At the top is an interesting little complex with an 1840s timber hospital and a Chinese garden with one of the best Chinese tings to be fund anywhere. In the suburbs is a magnificent large Arts-and-Crafts garden called Tupare on high ground over the river built by the local road asphalt contractor in the 1930s. The house tours at weekends are well worth it. A few kilometres away is Puketi gardens, created from 1950 by a rhododendron society which gives a misleading idea of what it is, which is a rainforest garden, mostly native trees and ferns interspersed with very large Himalayan rhododendrons, making a kind of native-exotic fusion paradise. It has very good infrastructure with excellently graded walks modulating into serious hiking. All these are free, and there are others. The town has become groovy recently, with the Len Lye gallery and a well-preserved streetscape with high end shops and a lot of very good restaurants at one end (Monica’s beside the art gallery is a requirement for lunch; the pizzas in the White Hart pub opposite are some of the best anywhere, and there are a lot of really good restaurants for dinner). The nearby sea frontage has a long coastal walk which is an important feature of the town, although the streetscape facing it is not of much interest.

This is a classy place in a top location. Our suite was exceptional. Hosts Rachel and Rod were very friendly and allowed us to arrive early and have a late checkout. The breakfasts were fabulous. We walked everywhere since it’s so close to town and to Pukekura Park, a must! We will definitely stay here again.

It is the second time we’ve stayed at Hosking House. Superbly located, only a short walk to the city and beautiful Pukekura Park the B&B offers stylish, comfortable accommodation with a friendly welcome from host Rachel. The building is a lovingly renovated early C20 timber villa. Rooms are spacious with large bathrooms and there is also a guest lounge. Breakfasts include homemade preserves and fruit, cereals and a cooked option. Rachel is obviously a very competent cook and foodie. We recommend Hosking House and will be back again.

This upscale B&B is clean, beautifully appointed and centrally located, making it an easy walk to eating places and other local attractions. The restored villa has plenty of space for guests and includes a guest kitchenette and lounge. The New York room, where we stayed, is spacious, although some Kiwis may find the bedroom, bathroom, toilet configuration, without an intervening door, to be somewhat disconcerting. Rachel made us welcome and provided us with useful local information. Parking in the driveway worked well for us as we were the only guests. It should be noted that the Council does not allow parking on this busy street.

Excellent location for the park and the town centre. A lovely boutique accommodation. The hosts have clearly put a lot of thought into the environment - comfortable and spacious room with fabulous bathroom. Breakfast was fresh & yummy with ingredients sourced locally. There's advice about local eateries & events should you want it, with brochures available. We were able to borrow bikes and the hosts even printed out additional information about a local gallery for us. It was charming & we highly recommend.

Hubby and I had never been to New Plymouth before, so decided to do a road trip on our Harley. Hosking House was a gorgeous place to base ourselves. The unique character of the home and the friendly, knowledgeable hosts made our trip one to remember. Restaurant and activity suggestions, beautiful linens & decor, homemade cooked breakfasts were all fabulous. Thank you Rachel + Rod for a wonderful stay.

We adored our stay at Hosking House. The rooms and guest lounge are wonderful, the b&b is centrally located, and the hosts were incredibly accommodating. We left early for a hike and we’re given a hot breakfast before we left. Can’t recommend staying here enough.

The bed linens are beautiful and so comfy and our Terenaki room was spacious, with lovely high ceilings. I only wish that I'd taken time to relax in the tub with a glass of wine. The front lounge is a good place to sit and read or visit with other guests. Rachel served a very fine frittata for breakfast. We walked to town for dinner at Shining Peak with a lovely, lively server from France, (thank you Rod for the recommendation). Hosking House is also a short walk to what has to be one of the largest parks for a city of New Plymouth's size. Highly recommended.
