We were very happy to make this discovery on our journey around New Zealand. All the comforts you would expect at a 5-star hotel for a fraction of the cost. Satellite TV, wireless internet access, home baking, and excellent beds making this the most memorable B&B we have stayed in. The range of the style and quality of B&B's in New Zealand varies a lot, so am happy to share our find. Many thanks!

Airlie House is a delightful B&B. My partner and I stayed 2 nights in the spacious and comfortable Garden Room, and I loved our private bathroom with the clawfoot bath and the lovely bath & body lotions and products available to use. There were also other welcome personal touches (e.g. delicious home baking) which seemed to be typical of the warm & friendly hospitality of our host Gabrielle (who will also offer to cook you a hearty cooked breakfast in addition to the delicious continental breakfast on offer). Located in a very central but quiet location also made this a wonderful base from which to explore the city centre and many attractions on foot. Airlie House offers accommodation with a level of comfort, ambience and quality that is great value for money, and if ever in New Plymouth again, we will definitely return to stay.

Stayed at Airlie House for 3 nights and was very impressed with the ammenities (beautiful generous sized bedroom with super king size bed, crisp cotton linen, ensuite, window seat and if you needed it, sky tv), the friendly interaction from the host and other guests (who had stayed previously), and the delicious and hearty brekfasts. This gorgeous villa has been stylishly renovated and dressed up and is very central to town. A real find and will be back again next time in New Plymouth!

There appear to be several good places to stay in when visiting New Plymouth. But I'd be surprised if any were half as good as this.
So, if you are going anywhere in Taranaki, I'd try to arrange your trip to include at least one night in Airlie House.
Other reviews have referred to the excellent, historic house, the friendly and first class service, the wonderful breakfast.
I just want to add that it is one of the best B&Bs I've ever stayed in!

There really isn't anything else to say about Airlie House and Gabrielle that hasn't already been said by previous reviewers that have stayed there. Everything about this B&B has quality written all over it. This really is a lovely place to stay.

This lovely B & B gave us a warm welcome on a cold winter's night. Gabrielle is a great host; she made sure we were comfortable and then left us to enjoy the wine and nibbles we'd brought with us in a charming drawing room. The underfloor heating in the bathrooms was especially enjoyable. We had a very good breakfast, and appreciated Gabrielle's assistance with planning our day.The house and gardens are immaculately maintained, and I look forward to a visit during summer.

Well Airlie House B & B really does live up to it's great reputation on tripadvisor. My husband and I have just come back from two nights there and if staying again in New Plymouth we would not go past it. From the delightful room (we had the Drawing Room with a big comfy, sunny window seat) with it's lovely linen, tasteful furnishings, fresh flowers and great array of tea/coffee plus delicious home baked cookies to the scrumptious breakfasts cooked by Gabrielle we came away feeling thoroughly spoiled! This beautifully renovated villa in a pretty garden setting is spacious, elegant and warm with two guest lounges, one with an enormous TV screen, computer and a mega collection of DVDs. The location is good with many attractions just a short stroll away. Thanks to Gabrielle we had a wonderful stay and are really looking forward to returning some day!

Yes, I wasn't quite sure about this B&B since the price (NZ$ 165/night incl. internet & breakfast) made me worried about the quality compared to the other luxury B&B and Lodges we have chosen on our trip through NZ. So expectations were quite low when we drove from Wellington towards new Plymouth, enjoyed the perfect view towards the volcano.

When we arrived we were surprised by the lovely house and especially the charming host greeting us, showing us our "garden room".

The house is excellent, an old, renovated house - such as you expect from a luxury B&B. Our room was just huge, with very nice view towards the garden. It was spotless clean, the bed of good quality... Everything as you desire from a much more expensive Lodge. The bathroom was one of the biggest we had on our trip, with bath tub & separate shower cabin. Again, spotless clean, with all the amenities (shampoo etc.) you need (and don't expect at that price). There was even a 2nd toilet for complete privacy.

The host informed us about the city, helped us to do all reservations for sightseeing (the heli flight over the summit of the mountain is a must (heliview helicopters operate a real one, not a Raven 44).

And then the breakfast, STUNNING! Very good coffee, fresh fruits (pineapple, strawberries, blueberries...), cooked breakfast - everything included in NZ$ 165...

After Airlie House I don't anymore understand the price structure of B&B in NZ. Okay, some are more expensive because of the location, the value of the house, but - really - how can anyone charge NZ$ 600 for a night at a luxury B&B when Airlie House charges just NZ$ 165???

I can only say: thumbs up for the fantastic lady and her real luxury B&B.

We had a wonderful stay at this centrally located, elegant, warm New Plymouth villa. It was my first stay at Bed and Breakfast accommodation. We booked the Garden Room, a very large double room with an almost equally large separate bathroom, complete with shower and bath. The room was quiet and peaceful with a stunning outlook on a beautiful, private front garden. The Queen-Sized bed was very comfortable. Also available to guests are a comfortable Sitting Room and a Television/Dvd Room.

Gabrielle our hostess was fantastic, welcoming and relaxed, putting us immediately at ease. She was also knowledgeable about New Plymouth which we found very helpful. The décor in the Garden Room and bathroom and throughout the house was beautiful with quality chattels, warm, clean and modern but also sensitive to the house’s historic origins. I consider this environment superior to any that a hotel room would provide.

The included breakfast was absolutely wonderful, cereals, then made to order cooked breakfast and muffins. On top of all this there were the wonderful little embellishments, like the lovely biscuits with our coffee and tea making facilities in the room, the linen towels and the bathrobe. We would not hesitate to recommend Airlie House to anyone wishing for a comfortable and relaxed stay in New Plymouth. We will definitely return!

As regular guests (5 Visits) of Airlie House we feel fully qualified to give Gabrielle a 10 out of ten rating for every aspect of the experience. The most recent stay even included our leaving behind a treasured object which Gabrielle packed and sent on to us straight away. The peace and quiet of our room which this time was the upstairs studio made for excellent sleep quality in the comfortable bed with super quality linen. There were as usual little treats for snacks, and toiletries in the bathroom to please the most discerning. Over all our visits we have stayed in each room and while they are all different in aspect and layout the comfort level is always superb. Airlie House will always be our choice when visiting New Plymouth for several days or just an overnight.
