Detailed Reviews
This hotel has recently been rebranded in the Distinction name. Great CBD location. The rooms are nice (nothing over the top) and comfortable. The shower has great water pressure. The staff is friendly and helpful. The price is outstanding. If you need somewhere with not a lot of frills in NP…this is a great selection.

Stayed here for 2 nights on a driving tour of NZ north island. . Service from the staff was exceptional, especially Karu and Selwyn who really went out of their way. Room was comfy and shower GREAT, very tasty cooked breakfast and lots of choice of things to eat. Main venue restaurant was closed but recommendations made by Selwyn were on the money for both ones we tried. Comfy beds.

Great service, but this hotel is really getting tired. Curtains faded, lift slow and smells of cigarette days. Just really felling worn out and in need of a refresh. It is very central and had a good charge back arrangement with good cafes, but I'd probably not stay again due to dated nature

Although the room is nice I was kept awake until 2am by stop and start shuddering thumping music from, I’m assuming a dance club nearby…if you value your sleep do not stay here!!! I could hear party goers on nearby rooftop partying at 1am!!!!!

Not the normal professional hotel experience you would expect. A member of our group received a disappointing breakfast. It took 2 staff and the General Manager of the hotel....and none of them would do anything about it and argued back once feedback was provided. Not the way to win customers over.

Response from ResmanagerGCH, General Manager at Grand Central Hotel
Responded 28 Feb 2020
Dear LeeMallia, thank you for your feedback. Please note that you did not see the General Manager of the hotel, but it was the Manager on duty that you spoke to. We are sorry to hear about your disappointment. Upon investigation in to this matter, your colleague ordered Avocado spread on toast and ate the eggs and mushrooms on the meal, leaving the spread on toast with fresh tomatoes. When a staff member served the coffees, they were told that she expected avocado slices instead of spread. Our menu says 'spread' and we delivered the meal as mentioned. However, to make things happy, the restaurant staff offered complimentary usage of the continental buffet and coffee also. We did what we could to our best of ability. I am happy to discuss this with you, so please feel free to email. Unfortunately, my manager on duty and staff offered alternatives at the time to ensure a happy breakfast experience, but you all did not want to accept anything, instead you all kept threatening to give us a one star on trip advisor. I am glad that the staff did what they could. I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in New Plymouth. We look forward to hosting your stay in the future and will always welcome you all. Warm Regards, Faiz Rashid, General Manager

This is one of those business and conference focused hotels typically found in medium sized tourist towns. It's clean and well run, with a very basic gymnasium, servicable guest laundry and lots of identical looking hallways. Our room was functional and predictable, with the usual twin double beds, basic cable and standard quality shampoo and soap. Staff were helpful and likeable without being overly enthusiastic. The food was pretty expensive looking, so we ate at the Irish Pub down the road instead. Basically, there was absolutely nothing remarkable about this place in either a positive or a negative sense, but it was pretty good value, especially given the great position, just off the main street and a short walk from the beach. Just be warned that the surprisingly heavy traffic in New Plymouth can make getting in and out at peak hour a problem. Where possible, lock up the car and walk instead.

.... paying $245 for a room.
I visited a lot of NZ Hotels with not even half of the price, which where much nicer and better equipped.
It's not enough putting a Spa in the bathroom. If the bath has an ambience of an train station toilet with an old shower curtain and a style of colours and furniture which let you really not feel comfortable.
The bedroom was small, but nice. The main room was ok, but it all looks like it was furnished by someone, who doesn't really appreciates a warm or designed furnishing.
The strap of the outdated blinds was broken, under the fridge was a peace of ripped carpet.
Sure, all minor details, but if you pay this amount of money, you can expect something better.
At the end I ripped my pants on a dangerous construction of door lock in the door frame and on top the hotel charges 1.5% for credit and debit card use. It's only a few dollars, but at this price level I think that's pretty ridiculous.
That was my fourth stay at a Copthorne Hotel and it was the first time I was disappointed.

The hotel is a labyrinth of corridors decorated in what can only be described as 'institutional' colours which I found to be depressing. Don't go here if you're claustrophobic! A full 5 minute walk from room to restaurant along corridors with so many twists and turns the notices and arrows are absolutely essential. Room is average, no particular complaints. View and outlook poor but that is what you get in a city. Breakfast excellent and all staff encountered were also excellent.
Car parking is free and convenient, part is undercover but no covered access to the hotel from here.
Lounge and bar comfortable but underused so not much atmosphere, perhaps prices are not competitive with nearby convenient bars and restaurants which results in under use.

Although it is a bit of a rabbit warren on many different levels, once you had your bearings, it was easy to find your way around. Staff very helpful. My room was a corner suite and was very well appointed. Great lounge area. Bed was comfortable.

Stayed here two night over Easter. We received a friendly welcome. Our rooms were very nice, clean and comfortable. Especially loved the spa bath. It is well situated within walking distance to cafes, shops and parks. The only downside was limited parking spaces.
