Detailed Reviews
The Nice Hotel is more than 100 years old and diagonally across the road from the oldest stone church in NZ. So some pretty good history to get in to. We were in the St Mary’s room on the front corner looking across to the church . The room sloped downwards somewhat disconcertingly but we were assure by Terry the owner it hadn’t moved in the 40 years he’s been there. Well appointed , large comfortable bed, good bathroom , a stack of art books to browse and a little library nook outside the room should more be needed.
We dined in the restaurant one night , great service and a good meal.
We also took the breakfast option which was served ( and cooked ) by Terry. A touch of theatre which was accidental i suspect but added to the quirky vibe.
There are only a few rooms, the bar and lounge are stacked with collectibles and antiques and staying in The Nice Hotel is an experience beyond accommodation.

We had a lovely stay at the Nice Hotel, which is centrally located and provides easy access to the town centre. The hotel and staff were most welcoming and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and clean, with a nice patio overlooking the garden. Dinner in the restaurant was very good, and the breakfast was provided with a personal touch. Terry the owner was very kind and considerate, and was ably supported by Maggie. A very well run hotel, and a joy to stay here.

It would be so simple to recommend just one thing here in this amazing Hotel Nice but no, I cannot because, I recommend everything . From the moment you step in the door your eyes are unable to stop flickering from side to side momentarily settling on all the beauty around you . From the entrance , to the lounge bar area, to the dining room leading out to a tropical heaven. Alfresco dining and drinking lures you into these terraced gardens harmoniously lit to a T . All the while you are greeted and accompanied by the lovely warm welcome from Maggie discreetly guaranteeing your every desire .Our huge bedroom is glorious and just like the rest of the Hotel it is overflowing with loving charm and state of art comfort. The beds are incredibly comfortable and we lacked for nothing. From microwave, to fridge , to expreso machine , to coffee plunger , heat plates , dressing gowns , superb pressure shower , heating, electric blankets and stunning decorations including chandeliers!
We have discovered a real jewel that stands out incomparable with anywhere else in New Plymouth or for that matter in Taranaki . The breakfast is scrumptious and the most delightfully happy owner Terry Parkes made it for us . A man of not only taste but integrity who’s love for art and luxury shine all over this humble naturally refined being . We cannot leave yet our newfound garden of Eden so we will be graced by another night in our dream Hotel Nice .
Thank you so much Terry for making dreams come true Michaela

We booked this place as part of our tiki tour through the lower North Island. The room was not particularly clean, the bedding stained in parts and the coverings were musty. We felt somewhat uncomfortable staying here. We tried to book elsewhere after viewing the room. It was too late at night so we had no choice but to stay.
The room was somewhat tired looking and the bathroom not to our taste. The bathroom had a spa bath but unfortunately this doubled as a shower and consequently water spilled all over the floor whenever you had shower due to their being no curtain or shower doors.
As this is a boutique hotel each room has its own individual flavour. The overall look and feel is one of old english combined with new. However, as with all hotels and particularly ones that lean towards that English country setting you need to keep on top of the cleaning and maintenance otherwise it gets musty and dusty suer quick which is what happened here.
Overall it came across as a bit dark and dreary. I am sure in its day it would have been amazing. Time for a mini revamp.
We wouldn’t stay again.

Stayed last night. Room was well appointed and bed was very comfy however my room was on the corner of two roads one being extremely busy and noisy. I hardly slept due to the traffic noise and vibration all night, no relaxing break for me. Less of a bother but still not good for the price was the cooking smell entering the room from below as the restaurant was busy and mould on the bathroom tiles. Way over priced and not a four star by far. 3 star is more realistic.. Very disappointed and tired.

You could have easily been forgiven for confusing the two - décor straight away suggests you are going to have an opulent and luxurious experience at the Nice Hotel. The service was welcoming and efficient - showing us to our room that actually felt like an apartment with its own deck (admittedly the largest option but well worth it). With all the elegance that reflected its past without any compromise on the mod cons. The restaurant served some of the best cuisine I've had for a long time and the skill of the kitchen evident on the plate - three hat stuff !

Dark room, saggy mattress, multiple decorative cushions, random artwork and odd collectables filled the hotel bedroom. We had little room to put suitcases and clothes needed for our stay.
The standard of cleanliness was poor, as the duvet cover was dirty and discoloured at top. The multiple cushions were well used. It is a unique old character hotel, but without attention to detail and cleaning it is not a nice hotel.

Very enjoyable stay. The room was very roomy, comfortable, warm. Bathroom was both clean and of high quality. Shower pressure impressive. Conveniently located, hard to fault.
The owners have obviously spwnt time to create a warm and welcoming environment, with good art, and furnishings.

Had dinner with friends at Table tonight. Everything was fabulous from the moment we arrived. The service by Maggie was second to none, the meal amazing and the ambiance added to the whole delightful experience. The lighting was moody, the restaurant was opulently decorated and warm and cosy, with the pleasant background music where it should be, in the background. Not surprisingly, the restaurant was full. I cannot wait to return. Thank you!

This was our second stay. Nice Hotel is a small boutique hotel owned and operated by hotelier Terry Parks. A well known local identity. Right in the centre of New Plymouth a 5 min walk to restaurants and bars as well as the Len Lye gallery .
Each room is individually decorated and the rooms as well as the entire hotel is home to some interesting art and artefacts . I travel extensively for business and would never normally chose to eat in a hotel restaurant but Table in the NIce hotel is well worth a visit. The food is excellent with a modern twist and changes regularly. The staff are efficient and friendly and bend over backwards to accomodate any requests. We are already planning another visit later in the year and we will definitely be re booking with Terry and the crew. Great experience all round.
