It's the details that make a place excellent. The Devon I think wants to be one of those places but it's not quite there. But it is pretty good.
We arrived before at 11.30 . My reservation said the arrival was midday so I assumed our room would be available at midday. We were told check in is from 2.00pm but they took our bags and said they would call us when the room was ready. This all occurred pretty promptly and our bags were in our room when we returned.
We were issued our room key and told how to find our room ; but we were not given a briefing on the hotel facilities. The room compendium also has no hotel map so after settling on to our room we returned to reception to find out where the pool was. You also have to sign for pool towels which is a strange process however I assume a number of pool towels have "walked" so I get it. I still don't know if there is a gym or where it is; but we did find the bar later in the evening. I don't know if you can have drinks by the pool area.
Our room was comfortable and vaguely like the pictures on the website. It only had seating for one person plus an "office " chair. It didn't;t have the small coffee/dining table pictured in the promo photos. However the bed was comfortable; the air con efficient and it was clean. There was the advertised Nespresso machine and a jug but no milk so we didn't make a hot drink.
Bathroom amenities are lacking. There is the "bulk" "eco" showers soap; shampoo and conditioner. The shower soap and shampoo looked suspiciously like the same product. There was one cake of tightly wrapped hand soap; and a small tissues packet which had been left in water so was damp. No makeup /cotton pads or the other wee amenity kits one would expect in a 4 star hotel. These are the little things that were lacking. When we asked for a second non wet tissue packet it was easily gained.
The pool area is lovely and a nice way to chill after a day of travel. It's not large but a comfortable size. The gardens are beautiful and the art!! Someone cares about art here and they have a lovely and interesting collection of pieces. It's such a pity that the really interesting bull in reception is placed on ...carpet tiles...but the piece itself was fabulous.
We arrived back in after an evening out just before 10.00pm when the bar was closing. The service was fabulous - the staff members ensured we were able to purchase something to our satisfaction. I have stayed in other hotels in the area and it's impossible to get a drink or a bite to eat after 9.00pm so this was particularly impressive.
It's not unusual to received. feedback form in the day after checking out. Some of my gripes (and all my positive comments) would have been more helpfully communicated directly. But they haven't done that.
We often travel to New Plymouth for a short period once a year. We would certainly reconsider The Devon - maybe those small things will have become excellent and I will happily re review with 5 stars.

We didn’t expect much from The Devon Hotel. The Devon Hotel surprised us with its cleanliness, facilities and services. Their breakfast is also great. After we checked in and saw the room, we were grateful and thankful that the Devon Hotel offered us the best value of money. We can sense that the owner is doing their best for their guests. Thank you, the Devon Hotel and Team.

The hotel is magnificent: the outdoor garden, the swimming pool, the spa. There are plenty of small garden rooms with terraces. The hotel has a bar and a restaurant. Bicycles are available and there is a free water fountain. Parking is free. The room is equipped with a double bed and two single beds, a table, chairs, kettle, tea, coffee, mini fridge. The bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer and toiletries. It’s a studio like home.

We booked The Devon Hotel – New Plymouth for three nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary and explore New Plymouth with our two children. Leading up to our stay, I had several conversations with the front office team via email and phone to ensure everything was organized, including a special anniversary treat like flowers and decorations.
When we checked in, the staff assured us everything was prepared. But when we entered our room, we were extremely disappointed. The room was right next to an under-construction area, and the noise was unbearable. Even worse, the room was completely different from what we had booked—it lacked the advertised bathtub shown in the pictures.
After a long back-and-forth with the front office, they agreed to move us to a new room but only the next day. On the following morning, instead of letting us enjoy our plans, we were forced to wait until 11:00 am for the room transfer. This disrupted our day entirely.
To add to our disappointment, there was no acknowledgment of our anniversary. Despite being promised special arrangements, nothing was done. When we raised these issues at checkout, the staff didn’t even bother to apologize or provide any feedback.
By this point, we were so frustrated that we canceled our third night. This experience fell far below expectations, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a smooth and enjoyable stay. Invoice no: 51580M for the hotel staff review and improve their communication.

Thanks for your feedback. Again, we noted your request for free upgrades and explained with our hotel full and on waitlist, that would not be possible. I'm so sorry that detracted from your stay. Kind regards, Peter Tennent

Checking in process was relatively smooth. Rooms are fairly basic but have all essentials. Wifi doesn't work very well if that is a concern for you. Accidently got put in the same room as someone else so walked in on them watching TV however this got fixed. However lots of extras, access to an offsite gym, bikes, pool and spa. Large buffet dinner at night which can be prepaid for at a cheaper price when booking accomodation. There is some free onsite parking first come first serve and other paid on site accomodation. A fiar amount of street parking around as well.

Hmmm, where do I start? I booked this hotel because the website shows it to be a really nice place in a good location. The rooms advertised were really cheap - about 100 dollars per night. So I booked three nights.
First, the good stuff. Staff are friendly, and it is clean. reception area is good, nice bar - it has a very popular resturant which we did not go to, but it was always busy so we assume it must be good.
Free bikes are available which was great as we used them to ride the coastal walkway. Apparantly you can also get a free round of golf at the local golf course as well.
Now for the catches.
The cheap rooms are cheap for a reason. So if you are going to book here, check first. The larger, more expensive rooms may not have the following issues. Our room was tiny - real small. The queens size bed barely fits in the room. If you were only there overnight then it is probably ok, but we were there for 3 nights, and as the weather was bad we had to spend more time int he room than what we wanted, and as it was very cramped this wasnt good.
Also the walls are not insulated for sound. There was a guest 2 doors down that kept everyone awake until well after midnight and despite us calling reception nothing appeared to be done. We could hear everything that was said in the next room if it was at a normal speaking tone.
The bed we had was so soft, after three days our backs were in a bad way.
A real pity as the next place we styed at in Wellington was virtually the same price but much much better.
The hotel has a pool, which in summer would be great, but in winter was too cold.

Thanks for joining us, Our pool we maintain at 30 degrees and our spa at 40 degrees. Our guests also enjoy free use of the New Plymouth Aquatic Centre - the pools are heated, but not as warm as ours. Next stay you should try one of our larger rooms or suites. Kind regards, Peter Tennent

Where do I start, Let’s start with Room 873. I stayed here for 3 sleepless nights. The rooms air conditioning was dirty and when turned on, it stunk the room out. I couldn’t use it. Every time the washing or dryer below room 873 is operating, this room can feel it. 3am I was woken to my room shaking and vibrating, I thought it was an earthquake. I heard my neighbours talk extremely loud every night as the walls are not sound proof and boy i was so tired every day. It was piss pour. Early in the morning, I had the Shower running when it was turned off and the toilet was blocked from the previous guest as they put wet wipes down. I was so mad as I didn’t get to have a toilet except in my mum and dads room which was at the opposite end of the hotel or the public restroom. I also had some lights working and others broken and Not working at all. It was a hell of an experience. I rang the customer service and had a maintenance guy come to my room at 5am. He said I should get a full refund and even a room change but I ended up with a Apology card and a little food platter as the hotel was full. The room it self is very small and no room for luggage. Parking is very bad and has limited space as the restaurant uses most of it. I didn’t use the swimming pool or spa. The restaurant was ok and the only part I liked from this hotel was the bed. I highly recommend not coming here unless your desperate. It’s 4 stars but I’ll give it a half star.

Greetings Freedom#, Ouch! I'm so sorry. We may have thousands and thousands of happy guests, but one unhappy guest is one too many. We are proud to have the region's highest independent rating, and be the region's most popular hotel, but again - one unhappy guest is one too many. My apologies! I will follow up with our team. Kind regards, Peter Tennent

The rooms are really clean and spacious, however my room over looked the dining area, so it was advisable to keep the blinds down. Within two hours a party of juveniles arrived and took rooms on the same floor as me. I had to escape with the aid of reception and find another room., which was achieved.
With the hot weather the pool was really good, except you might have to flee, if a party of children turn up and ignore the no jumping in the pool rules.
On my second night I thought it a good idea to utilise the bar and restaurant (called Marbles). Being a family friendly restaurant I waited in the bar until it had thinned out.
The bar has local beer and I tried two types. The bar tender was a little hazy on the where abouts of the The Sisters Brewery, which was barely a 20 minute walk from the hotel. He believed it was on the out skirts of New Plymouth! He also claimed that a beer from Wellington was locally brewed!
When I finally got a table in the restaurant I was given a seat right by where they were cleaning up and the spray of disinfectant kept wafting over. Not sure why I was given this seat, as the place was near empty. When I chose to use a bowl instead of a plate for the buffet one of the waitresses could not understand why and asked another waitress, who exclaimed in a loud voice, HE IS DRUNK.
I did quite enjoy the buffet range on offer and there was variety.
I returned in the morning for the breakfast and the atmosphere was more relaxed and the food on offer just as good. Compliments to the Chef

We were a small group of eight and stayed here three nights. Check-in was easy, the receptionists very friendly. Our rooms were all great - clean and very comfortable beds. Having a guest laundry was a real bonus and it was well patronised by guests. We ate at Marbles Restaurant for two of the nights and the smorgasbord selection was fresh, very varied and delicious. Well worth the money. The waiting staff here and the bar staff also very professional and great service. The hotel is very close to the Coastal Walkway, Pukekura park and the central city. Good parking too. There is an interesting collection of art work in and around the hotel, showcasing local talents. This would definitely be our go-to place in New Plymouth, we thoroughly recommend.

Arrive at this hotel to check in after a 5 hour drive - had trouble finding a park within the hotel grounds due to a fabulous buffet being served at Marbles restaurant - which we highly recommend and we enjoyed later that night .
Hotel has a nice pool to cool off in after a long road trip . Cold water machines in reception a bonus .
Staff were welcoming and explained the parking would ease after buffet (maybe restaurant only patrons could park in surrounding streets ? ) Room was clean - modern and we had been upgraded (thank you) They also recommended the Festival of Lights which we went out later that night to see
Would recommend and will return for another nights accommodation and the buffet
