Detailed Reviews
I stayed at ariki for two nights and really enjoyed my time there. The location was absolutely perfect for getting around town without a car because it's right in the city centre. The staff are immediately very friendly and take the time to get to know you and show you around. Genuinely awesome local guys. The facilities are clean, kitchen is stocked and while it's fairly dated it is well maintained. Beautiful rooftop patio and cheap laundry! I would definitely stay here again.

+1
Probably one of the quietest hostels I've visited so far (but I have just come from QLD Australia!). The staff were soooooo friendly! Walked in and showed me around, the woman who I met at reception knew exactly what the guys were doing in the room I was staying in which shows she talks to everyone. Instantly made me feel welcome. I had an amazing time walking to the bridge and climbing the rock with friends I met in the hostel. Who I've recently met up with recently too and seem like they will be friends for a long time. VERY clean, no smell, well organised and beautiful balcony. Thanks a lot Ariki B! (Wifi isn't 100% but who needs wifi anyway!! There was a library right next door with free wifi anyway)

The location is absolutely perfect - just up the street from the bus station, right across from the beach, and not that far from shops.
The staff were super friendly and helpful, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know a bit about each person that came to stay - the guy that checked in after me was welcomed warmly, as he apparently came to stay every year whilst WOMAD was on.
The room I stayed in was comfortable and had an ensuite bathroom, and if I didn't have alternative accommodation for the next few days of my stay I would have been very happy to stay here.

The location was perfect.
The staff was very friendly.
The community rooms were amazing and full of nice people.
It has carpets all over the place so if you go to the bathroom with socks at night you will feel like home.
Plus there is a giant blackboard in the hall where you can draw stuff so yeah go there don't think it two times.

First of all, the location is great and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. But the hostel is really dated. The interior is old, bathrooms as well. I wouldn't recommend it. You will meet a lot of nice people though.

So I was informed that late check-ins were possible. I arrived past 1am (as I told them I would) and was supposed to be left a key, however this never happened and I was forced to sleep in my car. This is partially my fault for not confirming about my late arrival a few days prior since I booked over a month prior. They refunded me, apologizing profusely when they opened when I explained what happened. They let me use a shower and the kitchen and probably would have let me use the internet for free had I asked. From what I saw of the hostel, it was very clean and the rooms very nice. The shower was big and is capable of taking a bath in.
Overall, confirm your late arrival if you booked far in advance.

This is a popular hostel located right in front of New Plymouth's main square, just a few metres from the bus stop, the i-Site, Puke Ariki and the waterfront. It simply doesn't get any better than this location-wise.
My friend and I stayed in the ensuite family room, which was great value for money at just over $80/night during Waitangi Weekend (summertime).
The bunk beds were average but the room was spacious and relatively tidy.
The big downside was being right next to the karaoke pub on a Saturday night, which was insanely loud until 1.30am. We couldn't sleep. Due to the heat and extreme humidity, closing the window wasn't a good option either.
If you're visiting during the weekend I would suggest making sure the room doesn't face this noisy pub, but you should be fine anywhere during any other night of the week.
This hostel is the perfect starting point to explore New Plymouth's attractions such as:
- Back Beach
- Mt Taranaki ($35 shuttle bus available)
- Coastal Walkway
- Len Lye Centre

A clean backpackers with a great view. Friendly staff, nice common areas. They are also fabulously centrally located. The only downside is the backpackers is located right above a bar that gets pretty rowdy on the weekends. I've done my fair share of hostel hopping around the world, and maybe my tolerance is lower these days. I slept really poorly the first night, and was so exhausted from our Mt Taranki climb the second that I managed to sleep through the party happening right outside the window. If you're a sound sleeper - good for you! Otherwise bring your earplugs :)

Booked the family room and loved it. Ariki Backpackers is across the road from Centre City and half a block from Coach Terminal, perfect position. I'll definitely stay there again. The room was spotless and staff extremely helpful.

Roll our of bed, walk downstairs, have a Tue and a sammie then off to surf. Very inexpensive - lacked publicly accessible wifi when I stayed there. Booked a private room that shared a shower - toilets are communal.
It's a hostel not a hotel - just the basics at a basic price. Bar downstairs can be noisy, but then again except for climbing those bloody stairs when you're pissed, it's a lovely location.
