I stayed here for two nights and it worked out great. Parking is on the street, but didn’t have any trouble finding a spot. It is about a 10-20 minute walk into the main stretch of restaurants, and close to a couple different grocery stores. Big lounge, dining, and sun room. Bed was extremely comfortable, and house was surprisingly quiet at night. My room had a heater which kept me warm and bathroom was kept very clean. Great value for price.

The owners are super nice and extremely helpful and caring. The hostel has a spacious clean kitchen and a very comfy, very large common area split into dining room, living room and sun room. The baths are also nice and clean. We stayed in one of the studios, which was super comfortable, but therefore I can’t comment on the rooms in the backpackers.

We stayed as a team of 22 athletes and 10 parents/support crew. It was very clean and tidy. The bunk rooms were perfect for athletes; the parents stayed in single, double, and twin rooms with shared facilities, and the self contained cottages. The shared kitchen was well stocked, and had 2 new ovens; the dining and lounging spaces were great for a big group. Our hosts were friendly and available for anything we needed. Walking distance to supermarkets, and Pukekura Park (for the lights); close to the city, the beach. 100% recommended :)

The space here at Ducks & Drakes works really well for groups and we are pleased that it did for your group Shaz. It was wonderful to host your crew. Credit to you and the parents for such a well behaved group of teenagers. See you next time.

Ducks & Drakes, which is run by Paula and her partner, is a perfect backpacker's retreat close to the heart of New Plymouth. Aside from the usual amenities available in an establishment that caters to people who travel with their world on their shoulders, D&D goes the extra mile in every dimension of hospitality. The property itself is very cosy with enough spatial divisions to ensure privacy for all its guests. The presence of an espresso machine (add-on) in the property ensures that your next cuppa joe is never too far away. The living room is wonderfully quaint and a lovely doggo accompanies this you as you settle in with a book. During our stay, the property was immaculately clean and the beds were very soft, which is just what we needed after our tramping expedition through Egmont National Park. D&D also provide a shuttle service, which made the trip there and back very convenient. Although we got late by nearly an hour during our tramp back towards North Egmont, Paula waited for us and showed great patience and care for our wellbeing once we returned. She went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and made our stay particularly memorable. I recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit this picturesque part of New Zealand.

I loved absolutely everything in this place: cosy atmosphere, warm room, my bed, lounge with fireplace, clean awesome bathrooms, very friendly welcome from Paula. Perfect location to walk to town centre, Len Lye gallery, or watch the sunset from the coastal walkway that is like 10min walk away. Oh, and they have a dog! How cool is that?! Thank you so much for hosting me, will make sure to spread the word and come back soon. Kate

This is very much a backpackers not a 'boutique hotel'. The room was very basic- literally 2 single beds, a bedside table and lamp and nothing else. However it was clean and tidy, just not what I was expecting after paying $95for a one night stay. They also advertised off street parking but when I arrived I was told my room did not have off-street parking and I had to leave my rental car on the road overnight.

Thanks for taking the time to send in a review Cheryl. We are a backpackers AND a boutique motel. We have 5 fully self contained cottages that don't fall under the "backpacker" category. We do have off street parking -- just not unlimited. Parking is prioritised for the cottages and had you booked one you would have had a spot. All the best...

Exactly what I required for a 1 night stay before my event. Close to town, quiet, great pricing and the hosts were very accommodating of my requirements making sure I had everything I needed. Glad I discovered Ducks & Drakes for future trips.

Ducks and Drakes was an awesome place to stay - the owners and staff are super friendly people and being just walking distance to town was fantastic. The rooms are basic but very clean and a lovely atmosphere throughout the accommodation. Also a lovely outdoor area for chilling out in the sun was very nice.

Brett and Paula are great people to deal with, we stay with them every time we visit New Plymouth. The units are super clean and suit our family well. Ducks and Drakes is within walking distance to town and a short walk through the alleyway to the supermarket.

Backpackers accommodation was clean and tidy.
Good kitchen, close to the supermarket and restaurants in the middle of town. Also close to beautiful Pukekura Park and amazing massive old Puriri trees.
Mattresses were comfortable in our 4 bed bunkroom, nice enough for our family of 4 who left it too late to book anywhere else, and we were lucky to get this.
Thanks New Plymouth really enjoyed our stay, shame the Mounga didnt take his korowai off :) Nga mihi Ducks and Drakes.
